gas forges offer a level of consistency and even heat that I enjoy, you can put your work in a gas forge and leave it in there for an hour if you wish and it will never burn. I also like how they do not emit a lot of fumes or require much in the way of fire maintenance.
If you run the right gas forge you can easily do anything you can do in a coal forge and for me, the gas forge is the only choice.

Agree, if a gas forge is set up even halfway right, you can use them to forge-weld easily. I've even been able to forge weld wrought iron with mine.

Coal creates a deeper heat at the same color, where gas seems to create a more superficial heat.
    You can feel it.
    Other blacksmiths agree.

My gas forges are forced air, work on propane or house pressure natural gas, and easily hit welding temperatures. Aside from that, pretty good information. 👍🏼

Love the old time feel of of a coal forge. I also admire the convenience of a gas forge. Unfortunately, I can only use a gas forge in city limits. Coal forge is only used for demonstrations and reenactment. Makes me sad honestly.

Its all in the details, I agree. Skill, the project, ect. I've been using coal/char for my entire venture so far. But I'm currently finishing up putting together my first gas forge. I got the Mr volcano hero #2. It was a great price and the option of being portable. That and the length it has.
I just made a sale to my neighbor( a pair of sheppards hooks) and now he wants a cooking tripod. With my coal forge, I was able to do the hooks just fine, but I would have liked to use the length of the gas.(I can get around 10 to almost 15 inches hot at a time depending on the stock)Same goes for the tripod. I did a small test piece to see if he still wanted one, and I bet it would have taken half the time using the gas one. Plus currently I'm not using a fire pot. (I dont have welding equipment) so i made "sort of" a small trench forge with pipe and big fire brick. Works great, but i need a pot asap lol. I was fortunate and found a homemade steel box grill that someone threw out. Looks just like a classic square coal forge without the hole for a pot. Did some modifications and bam!
But enough ranting, looking forward to your video on pricing work and such. 🍻

I like coal becuz that's what I got.😊I take mine outside so heat is not a problem especially when it's 30deg out! Oh yeah, mine is potable. I'm a shade tree blacksmith, ya know kinda like a shade tree mechanic.
