For people less well equiped but still wishing to do something like this DIY: It’s possible to get good results just selecting and matching high quality speaker components. If you do that in the right way you don’t need complex crossovers. I like to use first and second order filters and actually, also in this case a two way design with simpler crossovers could work really great as well. There are for example wonderful 8” drivers around that can play into the 3k Hz range. I find that many speaker builders underestimate what they’re losing with high numbers of crossover components and once again underestimate what can be achieved with damping materials and wiring instead. You still need to know what you’re doing, but unlike finetuning crossovers there are no numbers you can rely on. Your experiments in return will be extremely time consuming, but in the end this approach can work out very satisfying.
