Upper Upper Conasauga 7-6-13

The "Upper Upper" Conasauga is a section of river upstream of the more widely known "Upper" Conasauga. This rarely paddled section of whitewater begins at the confluence of Little Rough Creek with Conasauga and is accessed via the Hickory Creek Trail on Grassy Mountain. The section continues to Chicken Coop Gap which is known as the steep put in point for the following section named the "Upper" Conasauga. The river in both of these areas is tight and twisty with a steep gradient. Numerous and continuous class III / IV rapids can quickly turn into class V's depending upon water level. A true wilderness run through the designated Cohutta Wilderness the stream offers pristine and remote conditions. Access is extremely limited so careful planning before paddling this stretch is advised.
