  • Apple has decided they really don't want you to get your 2000$+ machine fixed by anyone but them, we disagree.
    Our Website:
    morethanafix.com
    Tools we Use
    Soldering
I currently Use 3 different handles, standard, micro-pencil and micro tweezers.
I will say having the standard handle and micro pencil is a necessity and the tweezers
are intermittently useful but not necessary.
Tip choice is largely personal preference, unless its conical.
I use bevel or chisel tips for standard handle and knife tip for micro pencil, standard ones for the tweezers.
Fume Extractor- Not available on amazon, but we use a Quick 6102A1 (Dual Port) The single port is the 6101a1, don't cheap out on your health!
I believe there are some vendors in the US on eBay for these or you could order on ali express Union repair etc.
Solder fumes are bad to breath, get a good fume extractor lest ye get the cancer!
amzn.to/4aumQa9 - Hakko FX951, Single input soldering station with standard sized handle (FM-2027) and stand
amzn.to/3WTAtgb - Hakko C1551 Dual Port Soldering Station (FM-203) Station Only
amzn.to/3WUQZMP - Hakko FM2032 Micro Pencil, my most used iron by far.
    amzn.to/45bKcAF - Hakko Micro tweezer + stand + tips
amzn.to/3R0AeMp - Quick 861DW Hot Air Station, Makes things hot , reliable, I like angled nozzles.
amzn.to/3WUv2NP - AMScope SM-6T-FR Microscope head we use with a boom arm. I like the boom arm, some people don't, this is a personally preference.
If you have a shaky table, you should get a stationary non boom arm mount.
amzn.to/4bycmbe - Barlow .5 lens. double your working distance , halves magnification.
Working under a microscope is frustration without a Barlow lens.
amzn.to/3KjWRaI - AmTech NC-559-V2-TF, The Goat of flux. Smells of oranges.
    Testing
amzn.to/3WUQZMP - Siglent SDM 3045X Benchtop multimeter, this is not really necessary and a hand held meter is fine for most applications.
This benchtop supply makes it easy to have an overlay in OBS and has some fun features.
amzn.to/3UTgzPM -Fluke 117 Handheld multimeter True RMS. This will work forever and this is what I used before using the Siglent.
I still use this for larger items that cant go on the table.
amzn.to/44XCPfJ - General USB C amp meter, if I didn't need my meter to show on my computer screen, Id use this, its 10$ and works great.
amzn.to/44WAVfx - Fancy USB C amp meter, has software with fun things like graphs, you can see it on your computer screen.
amzn.to/4bR2Yiu - Thermal Camera, the amount of things this makes faster or possible to fix is astounding.
    For anyone fixing board professionally.
    Misc:
amzn.to/3KjVzMU - Large Heating Mat, great for MacBook LCD only and many other repairs.
    Tweezers:
amzn.to/3V2nnuy - Dumont 5 tweezers, the fanciest of tweezers, I use these for only microwork, great for jumper wires and other fine work.
amzn.to/3QXTha1 - Hakko curved tweezers, great general purpose fine point curved tweezers.
amzn.to/44VvvBq- Hakko straight tweezers, like above, but straight.

    Excellent job
Heating the lid with those heating blankets helps to remove this adhesive.

indeed, we have been doing that for all future ones, I have a long video on a 16inch I still need to finish editing, we should have that up within a few weeks!

Good job! I'm doing A2337/A2338 LCD replacements basically every day, A2681 like 3 times a week. I would say it's a job full of traps and probably impossible to do it right for the first time (I f'd up 3 panels before I successfully changed my first A1708 LCD years ago), but if you do that often, it's OK. But A2442 really is an ultimate pain in the ass. Better money, but always a lot of stress... precision needed in every step and if something happens with those chips, no other choice than take it to Apple. Hate that... but yeah, there's definitely a market for that, because as you said, it's not possible to just take whole assembly from another A2442 and change it.

Thank you! We generally will do full assembly swap on any of the pre apple silicone machines where function isn't lost with full assembly swap, It's a bummer this is what consumers need to get done to just fix their machine without the good graces of apple!

Thanks for your honesty about replacing even pre silicon LCD panels. I was lucky to have plenty of old assemblies that I could practise on because it is not easy at first.

These are certainly a challenge. I have attempted one A2442 where I had an unlocked board/ machine with a broken screen. Had another locked machine with a good screen so needed to swap the two IC's to get a fully functioning LCD with no artifacts. I got both panels out OK but I did have the LCD on a heat pad at 60°C. The adhesive broke a few times but in the end I reverted to using the Air Slice discs to finish the job. I stuffed something up on the IC swap though and the machine had no backlight and was rebooting. Image was still functioning and if I left the backlight connector disconnected there was no rebooting. I hope to go better next time and luckily these were both my own machines. Thanks for the video though, it's appreciated and good job. I know that every hot air station is different but can you share your temperatures and air setting for removal and especially refitting the IC's to the new panel. Also exactly what did you use to shield the new LCD panel when you were refitting the two IC's please? (just Kapton tape?) I think that those are some of the most important aspects of this repair. Thanks.

Settings for removing the bezel was 140C max airflow, Settings for both removing and placing the IC chips was 345C, max air flow on a quick 861DW. Essentially just Kapton tape and a stencil I had to shield the LCD and blow air away from it

wow man, this takes courage, very nice and detailed video, i wanted to see something like this for a while now, thanks, though i still don't think i'd do that in our shop, too risky for my taste😁, and you did it while talking to a customer about a 2013 macbook battery replacement, legend🤣

Will Apple be sued for this unfair practice that prevents users from choosing to repair using alternative replacement parts?

@@morethanafix exactly, this is why supporting Louis Rossmann and his RTR efforts is so important. Louis has been actively advocating for RTR for well over ten years now and has made the biggest difference to my mind.

Has anyone figured out why the screen is so weak? Or how common is the A2442 requiring new screen? Is it the same spot they break? The reason I ask is I barely tapped mine on the bathroom floor and it broke. I didn't drop it I was just leaning forward to put it on the floor. I've ended up plugging it into my TV. I would like it fixed, but at the same time the next screen I get is it going to be so fragile? I have an IPAD 2 I've probably dropped more times than I can think of and it's been robust as hell. Fairly sure I either got a Friday manufacturing screen or just a really bad designed screen.

I do think this LCD could probably use a bit more support inside of the metal backplate. We have not really seen the A2442/A2485 14/16" pros any more often than other MacBook for screens. I do feel that any of the USB C machines are commonly broken because there is something on the keyboard, the lid closes and the space between the screen and keyboard is so small it makes it easy to pressure fracture the LCD. This sort of damage I find to be very common, grains of sand small rocks etc.

@@morethanafix Thanks for that. Maybe it's just me then. It'll be about 10 years before I buy another Mac, unless I can make some money out of it. Next time I'll buy the protection case. FOR SURE lol!

Is this model impossible to repair if the DP855A chip is damaged? During repair, it accidentally caused an internal short circuit in the chip, which made the original DP855A chip unusable. The DP855A chip was available in China, but unless it is a DP855A chip extracted from the A2442 model, nothing is displayed on the screen. (Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to extract the serial from the DP855A chip or reprogram the serial.)

Unfortunately the only route would be through apple at the moment. Chip is encrypted and paired with device in manufacturing process.
