I think it would be impossible for a song with this intro to enter the charts today. Things are much safer and less experimental these days. We are all the poorer for it.

Totally agree, i think it's an art form that doesn't fit the corporate model x

Such a haunting but also catchy song, which is kinda characteristic of OMD. They were so unusual. It has so much emotional energy as a song, and the video is very effective, using things akin to stage craft rather than effects. The while thing is so compact and near perfectly crafted. One of the most unexpected hits - we were in a more thoughtful and open time I think

Great choice. I was listening to the album this was taken from only the other night. They certainly made the most of those analogue syths of the time. When you look back on their career they made lots of brilliant singles.

Hi, Joan of Arc, also known as Saint Joan of Arc, was a fascinating figure in French history. Here's a summary of her life and legacy:
    National Heroine:
A young peasant woman from Domrémy, France (born around 1412).
Claimed to receive divine visions instructing her to lead France to victory in the Hundred Years' War against England.
Convinced the French crown prince, Charles, of her legitimacy and secured a military command.
    Military Leader:
Led the French army to a pivotal victory at the siege of Orléans in 1429, boosting French morale.
Continued to fight alongside Charles' forces, contributing to his coronation as King Charles VII.
    Martyrdom and Sainthood:
Captured by Burgundian forces allied with the English and put on trial for heresy.
Burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431 at the age of 19.
Declared a martyr and a national heroine of France.
Rehabilitated by the Catholic Church in 1456 and canonized as a saint in 1920.
    Legacy:
Revered as a symbol of faith, courage, and patriotism.
An enduring figure in French culture and a source of inspiration for many.

This is a great song from a great band, I got confused too with Joan of Arc, I'm pretty sure they released a song called Joan of Arc as well, I could be wrong though 🤔🤣

Probably the only time in chart history that a band released two songs with the same song title & as consecutive singles, with both reaching the top 5.

People forget how massive this song was. It was the best seller in Europe in 1982. Number 1 in a lot of countries.

Great song! I seem to recall they actually played the intro on the radio instead of a radio edit w/o intro. And you're right about the Mellotron if I recall correctly. There's another British Band, Cradle of Filth, who also has a song about Jean of Arc, it's called "The Death of Love". Every bit as atmospheric, although somewhat heavier :-) (Hmm.... I brought them up before, right? Because of their "Temptation" cover).

Uploading an official video was a test of whether it was still possible on youtube, but always the music triumphs the promo videos and the beginning of this track is phenomenal xx
