Great job getting on your first flats! They can be tough even for people that have been catching them for years. Your first 2 flats during the day is pretty special (especially for videos purposes). My first few flatheads were very close to where you are fishing haha Also, don't be afraid to stay the full night if and when you can. I've caught a ton of flatheads super late into the night and morning. Now you have to beat your PB again!

Thanks man! Watching your videos was honestly the secret! I have watched all of your videos studiously trying to figure out what I was missing. I think snelling my hooks and just spending the time was the ticket. Love your channel; thanks for the comment and support.

@@FishingCircle Glad I could help a little haha! Snelling is definitely pretty important for hook ups on some hooks. As annoying as it sounds when people say it, time on the water really does help a ton. Someone can tell you anything and everything and you can still strike out because of some dumb reason lol If you do start really getting into flatheads, I recommend increasing the strength of your line or you'll learn the hard way like a lot of us. These days I use 120-150lb braid and the same for my mono leader. It definitely isn't because of the fish. It's the structure. We have some nasty sharp rock piles and submerged trees that you will lose to on a decent fish. I know you caught your bigger flat on the cheaper setup which makes for a really fun fight but if you keep fishing for them, you'll hook a 40+ and you might not land it. Ask me how I know haha that being said, I've caught tons of flats with lighter gear back in the day. You almost never really need that heavy of line but you'll wish you had it when you hook one that breaks you off. Pretty much every time I would break off on a fish, I'd gradually increase to where I'm at now. I've never broken 120+ (yet) but I have with 100lb test. Still haunts me since it fought way harder than any flat I've ever had on. Just some food for thought. You'll catch plenty of fish on both setups you showed in the video today so I'd just keep fishing with them and upgrade as you feel like it. Tight lines out there! I bet you'll break your PB a couple times this year if you put in some hours. Once you break the seal, the flood gates open. I was stuck on 16lbs for a long time when I was younger and then broke it 3 trips in a row

That’s great advice! I want to replace my cheap set up with a heavy casting rig with line like that. I’m hoping to keep breaking that PB! You’re the man; thanks for everything 👊🏼

@@FishingCircle nice! I like spinning reels but bait casters are nice for their clickers and line capacity. Especially if you are using a kayak to run baits, it starts making more sense haha

      What rod/reel would you suggest?

Awesome work to get a giant!
I’ve only ever caught them on accident bass fishing. They sure are big though!
Also way to go catching one on a plastic spin reel that was impressive!!

Alright!! You got a good Flatty!! Awesome to watch how excited you are! I went a whole year without a hookup! I love that you have the Tiger setup from Walmart! I used top fly into Destin Florida and hit the Walmart and buy that rod for the week and then give it to someone on the beach when it was time to leave!! You are still welcome on my boat whenever you are ready!

Congratulations, that was a cool fish. I hope you’re using sunscreen. I just had Mohs surgery because I didn’t.
