Spot on about Plugin Hybrids, the newest Hybrids from Toyota were seamless. During the gas ransom attack, I filled up my Camry Hybrid in Tennessee and was able to Drive to SC and back without worrying at all about finding gas which was difficult. Just think what a mess it would be after a Hurricane or something with everyone owning an all Electric POS. But an intelligent approach would require intelligent politicians! Good luck with that! They’re stupidity will only succeed in putting more American car companies out of business which may be their overall goal!

The weak part of this model was the low tension piston rings. At about135k miles, our 2010 suddenly started using a quart of oil every 900 miles. I traded it in for a Chevrolet Volt PHEV with exactly the benefits Scotty describes. The computer forces the engine to use up gasoline every 6 months so it doesn't go stale. If we don't go to Grandma's house, 4 gallons is plenty for 6 months.
The engine run 15 minutes every month to lubricate the seals.
The oil needs to be changed every 24 months. By which time, it may have burned only16 gallons.
Another benefit of the PHEV is no range anxiety or problems due to forgetting to plug it in.

I’ve said for years, improving Hybrids would be less damaging for the economy, allow for infrastructure to catch up and makes the most sense. It also would allow the battery technology improve and be a practical solution that would work for everyone regardless of their location and driving needs. But that would require our government to have some common sense. Good luck on that!

@@wilkoone9155 well then maybe you should run for President! 😪. First it conserves what resources we have and lower usage while the technology can improve and people adapt. Gives a sensible timeline to build the Infrastructure to support a all electric utopia that your shooting for. Plug in hybrid can eventually improve the conversion process and still work for people in mountainous , cold and rural areas were electric vehicles of today are still not practical. You have farmers and construction workers who rely on large work trucks to do business, moving to hybrid temporarily will be an acceptable transition as technology improves and becomes more affordable for the masses. And most importantly it will be less destructive to the industry that we need and still will need for many years to support the transition. But this would be a common sense approach not a crazy activist one, and there seems to be little common sense left anymore.

I agree with you, Scotty. Car manufacturer should be making more plug-in hybrids. My wife and I are on our third hybrid. Our first was a used one, a 2007 Prius (fully loaded) that we picked up for $6K CDN. Drove it 3 years until someone ran into it (writing it off). The insurance company gave us $6600, $600 more than we paid for it. Next we bought a used RAV4 Hybrid, also fully loaded. It’s exceptional. Great in the snow too. Last week we picked up a Prius C, 83K km, super clean and well maintained, cost us $8300 CDN. Amazing fuel economy in a fun little city runabout. The info menu will tell you practical things (like the percentage of EV usage and the cost of each trip - provided you enter the cost per litre when you gas up). It even breaks it down to the cost per km (or mile). It’s easy to use, intuitive, and honestly - it’s fun! They’re practical cars too, being hatchbacks.

Bought my '04 Prius in '18 w/108k miles for $4,800. Had a brand new 'big' battery replaced by dealer just prior. Great shape inside/outside - all i've done is change the yellowed headlight units/seat covers (oil changes, of course). People cannot believe it's a 20-yr old car. AND.... it has MORE than paid for itself over the 6 yrs i've owned it (50k miles later)! It has REALLY boosted my retirement plan, I'll just say that!! I don't see myself ever getting rid of it.....

You can put after market TPS tire pressure sensor as well. I have 2013 Lexus ES300H with 225000 miles on it, original battery, never had issues, still doing about 37 to 41 mpg. One of my tire pressure sensors battery was weak, Actually Lexus told me you can put all 4 aftermarket from Discount tires. Now instead of putting all 4 I just put only 1 which was defective and my TPS light is off and it works fine now 😅

I have a 2013 Prius C with 142k miles on it. Outside of changing the oil. I have had to change both tail lights because of water filling up the lenses, and had to replace the driver side auto door lock motor. But that is all. I would definitely buy another Prius again.

My wife's 2015 Prius with 141k miles has been the best car we have ever owned. Regular maintenance only and a couple of new headlamp assemblies due to oxidation but that is it. It still has the original battery pack and gets 51 MPG. We have no intentions of getting rid of it anytime soon.

Really head gasket on these is not such a disaster. There are shops doing them for 1-2k. That is quite simple job on these, I did mine on weekend, without any experience in replacing head gaskets before (well, I am quite handy, but anyway). After a cross-country trip in my then-new ‘07 FJ Cruiser, I was so tired of the too-frequent fuel stops, so when I got home I bought a new Prius. The range was so refreshing, but the darned thing was not made for me. I’m 6’5”, and within a year I was hitting the chiropractor weekly for a tune-up. Yes, the Prius was ugly as heck, but my timing was perfect: there was a hybrid battery production snafu going on, thus no new Prius were available. I pulled into a dealer somewhere and got absolutely swamped by sales sharks and managers. Sold it on the spot for 15k more than I paid for it. Got a ride to the airport, flew home, and bought another Land Cruiser (sold the FJ-C). Life is good sometimes. 👍

just a story about my tire sensors. I am in Europe so I have Peugeot 807 12 yrs old (big family car) first owner 200K km so far. Well, one of my sensors died and I asked for a replacement in Peugeot service. Shocked as the price was like a new Michelin tire. I asked to make my sensor inoperable as I didn't want to waste money on it. Officially this is impossible but they did it for me. I paid around 10$ for this job on all 4 corners. Frankly speaking, I don't need it.

I'm driving a 2009 Prius with 234000mi. No problems, next to no maintenance, just a little less agile since the battery is aging. OEM battery is $2000, less for aftermarket. Compare that to well over $10k for EV batteries...
I agree completely about PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles). The only reason I didn't get one is because I can't afford a newer car and the best option for an older PHEV, the Chevy Volt, is hard to find and the guy I was going to buy one from bailed on me. My next car will almost certainly be a PHEV. And given Toyota's solid engineering and rock solid reliability, I'll probably be going with a Prius Prime.
