Nice reaction! This recording was done in January 1996. In June of that year Eva was diagnosed with metastasized melanoma and she died in November. She was really only known in the Washington DC area when she passed. Her first solo album, Songbird, was released after her death. It wasn't until two years later, when a couple of DJs in England played her recordings of Over the Rainbow and Fields of Gold on the radio and TV, that she really began to be noticed. Since then, her albums have sold over 10 million copies. I first learned of her in 2000, when NPR included her version of Over the Rainbow in a list of the top 100 recordings of the 20th century. I have loved her ever since. It was only last year that I learned that a friend of hers had recorded this performance at Blues Alley on the night they were recording her live album. As far as I know, the 13 songs on that video are the only full videos we have of her performing live. I am so grateful to get to see her perform.
By the way, Eva's voice could go from razor thin whisper to sky-piercing belt in a second. For some great examples of that, check out Blues in the Night, or Oh, Had I a Golden Thread.
Thanks for reacting to this! This recording brings me to tears every single time I hear it.

So so sad that Eva died so young - 1963 - 1996. What an excellent singer/songwriter/guitarist, you could just go on & on about how excellent she was. RIP Eva ❣❣❣

Eva's discovery was not the usual way. This performance was from Jan. 1996 at Blues Alley in DC and she would pass away from melanoma in Nov. of the same year. Her success came after her passing a few short years later when someone from Great Britan got a recording of hers and heard this song. He passed it on to Terry Wogan and insisted he listen to it. He did, was amazed and played it on his radio show. The phones blew up requesting the tune and asking who the artist was. The US would catch on shortly after. I discovered her when in the 1992 Olympics, figure skater Michelle Kwan did a routine to Eva's cover of Sting's Fields of Gold. Since then, she has sold tens of millions of her recordings. Eva did a mix of different genres of tunes and yes, they were covers. But what set her apart was her ability to do them in a way to make them her own. And that voice! The voice of an angel for too short a time. RIP and sing with the heavenly choir, Eva.

I grew up in the county next to Eva's but I never got to see her perform; I only discovered her when it was too late and she was already ill. I'm a classic rock kind of guy but Eva just has a special place in my heart. She made you feel things you didn't know you had in you! Best all around female vocalist I've ever heard, what a tonal quality, breath control, just an amazing voice. She could do it all: blues, jazz, gospel, country, folk, rock...what a shame that the world was robbed of all the beautiful music she had to give us.

Eva Cassidy was so incredible what a voice and talent. It was such a tragedy and loss to the world when she died of cancer at only 33 years old in 1996, but her music will forever live on. Some other Eva Cassidy recommendations are Danny Boy, Time After Time, Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, Songbird. Thank you both cheers.

That was such a beautiful rendition of this song. So sad that she is no longer with us. She died at only 33 years of age. I also love the version by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. Sadly he also died young at 38 years of age. At least we have their music left as a legacy.

Eva's version of this song is almost always characterized as "heartbreaking" (or, as you said, "sad"). Of course, I don't know what Eva had in mind when she created this guitar and vocal arrangement, but when I hear it, I imagine that it is being told from the perspective of someone who's going through an extraordinarily difficult experience, and is near the end of what they can endure -- yet they maintain a grasp on the hope that things WILL get better one of these days. This, I believe, is why Eva's rendition is so heartbreaking; because the singer is about as low as possible, but clinging to the idea of a brighter future. Brilliant!

First time I heard this was many years ago in my old Sydney bedroom while I was reading something. Within seconds of it starting I stopped what I was doing and stared at the TV for the next 4 minutes mesmerised. I played her version of Danny Boy for my Dad’s funeral in 2004. I just got tears in my eyes listening to this again.

I love this video- I could listen to it every day. I so respect the fact that you did not stop the video or talk while she was singing. You were both right- it is relaxing and so soulful. I feel mesmerized by it. By now, you have read the previous comments telling Eva's backstory. This helps to explain the sadness you felt in hearing this. I am so grateful her friends recorded these few Videos that exist as Eva was very shy. I highly recommend you react to the Documentary of Eva's musical journey. You may need some tissues. 😓 A new fan in Gatlinburg! Best wishes with your channel!! 🤞✌

Far better than the original, as all of Eva's work is. Even Sting, after hearing Eva sing 'Fields of Gold' said, it's her song now, not mine. I can't compete with her genius. Grateful British DJ Terry Wogan introduced her in the UK. Paul McCartney, Sting, and Eric Clapton wanted to help Eva, but this was just around the time when she passed at 33 yrs old. Incredible loss to the music industry. Eva didn't want to sing pop. She created her music clean. No background or studio enhancement. This is based on a show in a bar, where she performed one night! No special features. Just Eva and friends singing in the bar. Genius musician a statement to which all experts agree.
