  • Archery with the with the worst possible bow.
    A friend of mine said he needed a expensive new 2018 bow
    to become a better archer!!
    The next day I went to a building shop and bought a stick and a string and the following weeks I only did archery with my 7 dollar bow.
    Too low power, vibrate, bad to hold etc ..
    I love my various good bows, old advanced materials but also modern carbon and I think Holless Wilbur Allen invention of the compound bow is an genius invention for archery.
    But it's definitely an educational experience to try archery with bad equipment and only dependent on own archery skills.
    It is of course more difficult to shoot with a bad bow
    (Beginning must definitely use a good bow)
    Afterwards it was amazing to shoot with my normal good bows.
    Sincerely
    Lars Andersen

      Fun fact: The concept of “carrots improve your eyesight” was a fallacy made by the allied powers during World War 2 (although based on some truth) Carrots in reality contain “beta carotene” which is turned into a protein called “Retinal” (C-20 H-28 O) which is important for *retaining* healthy eyesight, but doesn’t exactly “improve” it. When the British Royal Air Force started using Radar, they hid the fact of its existence by claiming they ate a lot of carrots.

      Tell Lars to shoot 9s and 10s consistently with a olympic recurve bow. He can't.
      What he does is impressive, but he can't moke modern archers for that.
      Modern archers are not warriors, they don't need to do what Lars does or war archers did.
      An olympic archer wants to shoot 9s and 10s at 70 meters.. All a modern bow hunter wants to shoot through a deer's ribcage.

    This makes sense. Stone Age archers may have created bows like the simple bow that Lars made here. They did not have anything near modern technology during that time period, so a simple stick with string or rope tied to it was all they had to work with.

      The Holmegaard bows are the oldest found. They were from the Mesolithic period, predating the stone circles of the Neolithic period. These Holmegaard bows bear a striking similarity to what we now know as American Flatbows. They are beautifully crafted and well designed, far beyond this stick and string, but still made using stone tools and patience.

    The letter of W. Frankland, an eyewitness of flight shooting of Ottoman secretary of the Turkish Ambassador, Mahmut Effendi in London, in 1794;
    ‘Dear Brother,
    I have just been to see the secretary of the Turkish Ambassador shooting with Waring1 and other famous English bowmen. There was a great crowd, as you may suppose, to see them. The Turk, regardless of the many persons standing round him and to the amazement and terror of the Toxophilites, suddenly began firing his arrows up in all directions, but the astonishment of the company was increased by finding the arrows were not made to fly, but fell harmlessly within a few yards. These arrows the Turk called
    his " exercising arrows." This was an idea that was quite new to the bowmen present, and they began to have more respect for the Turk and his bow. The Turk's bow is made of antelopes' horns and is short, and purposely made short for the convenience of being used in all directions on horseback.
    The Toxophilites wished to see the powers of the Turkish bow, and the Turk was asked to shoot one of his flight arrows. He shot four or five, and the best flight was very carefully measured at the time. It was 482 yards(446 meters). The Toxophilites were astonished, I can tell you.
    '
    Waring said the furthest distance attained with an English flight arrow, of which he had ever heard, was 335 yards(306 meters), and that Lord Aylesford had once shot one, with a slight wind in his favour, 330 yards(300 meters). Waring told me that he himself, in all his life, had never been able to send a flight arrow above 283 yards(258 meters).
    The Turk was not satisfied with his performance, but declared that he and his bow were stiff and out of condition, and that with some practice he could shoot much further than he had just done. He said, however, that he never was a first-class bowman even when in his best practice, but that the present Grand Seigneur (III. Selim) )was very fond of the exercise and a very strong man, there being only two men in the whole Turkish army who could shoot an arrow as far as he could.The Turk said he had seen the Grand Seigneur send a flight arrow 800 yards(730 meters).
    I asked Waring to what he attributed the Turk's great superiority over our English bowmen ; whether to his bow or not. Waring replied he did not consider it was so much the result of the Turk's bow, but rather of his strength and skill, combined with the short light arrows he used, and his method of shooting them along the grooved horn attached to his arm(siper). Neither Waring nor any of the Toxophilites present, (and many tried,) could bend the bow as the Turk did when he used it.
    So much for the triumph of the Infidels and the humiliation of Christendom.’
    'Yours aff,
    W . FRANKLAND.
    To Sir Thos. Frankland, Bt., M.P.Thirkleby Park.' 1795

I am lost for words.(But, Lars is a master in his art with Unimaginable skills. I am of the opinion quality of bow matters for the regular folks.) With the advent of gun, archery has lost its great schools of the world which existed in various places throughout a large period of human history. I sincerely feel what Lars has achieved is repeatable with proper teaching and training. In the interest of the art cum sport I hope one day, Lars will set about teaching to a lot of students; so that his achievement lives for ever. My respect and love to Lars.

      @@Lost_Hwasal Totally agree. What I took away from the video wasn't an argument of power. Even today's best PSE/Matthew's can't compete with the power and distance of historical bows.... my take away was "nice & new" doesn't equal accurate.

    • @Lost_Hwasal
      @Lost_Hwasal 5 років тому +1

      @@AOMartialArts I was referring to accuracy not power, you need to be accurate to hit 10s at 100 meters, not powerful. Outdoor olympic archery is 70m and the girls shoot 40 lb recurves. I know an older lady from my local archery shop that shot 100 meters with a 30 lb compound. And i guarantee you any modern compound has more power than any historical bow, draw weight is not all that goes into the power a bow produces, its the efficiency as well. A PSE full throttle can shoot 375 fps, numerous reproductions of english war longbows put their fps around 150-180 fps. To put that in perspective a 40-50 lb modern olympic recurve shoots 180-200 fps. While english war longbows shot heavy arrows kinetic energy is based on the square of the velocity, so velocity is much more indicative of kinetic energy than arrow weight. In addition the heavier the arrow the more energy the bow imparts to the arrow, so a compound shooting a heavier arrow would impart even more energy than before. A stick and string are simply not as accurate, there are so many variables when it comes to a good shot. Carbon backed wood or foam limbs will create a much more consistant release speed which will affect shot elevation, will be less prone to torque which will throw your shot off, and using an arrow rest instead of the back of your hand or a shelf will produce a lot less shot variance. Shooting a bow is a very chaotic event with lots of variables, it doesnt matter how good you are, a finely tuned compound bow will control those variables much better than a stick with a string. Notice how hes only shooting short distances.
