  • In this video, you'll learn about the general structure of amino acids, which include an amine group, a carboxylic acid group, and a unique side chain (R-group) attached to the alpha carbon. In addition, we'll explore where amino acids fit in terms of biological metabolism. By Tracy Kovach. . Created by Tracy Kim Kovach.

    Helpful video, but i'm confused about the transition of the amino acid structure to the fischer projection. I thought that since the H is on a dashed line, then it would be on the vertical line of the fischer projection not the horizontal line? Confused on how in general I'd be able to place all the substituents onto the projection.

  • @jpilano
    @jpilano 9 років тому +4

    Regarding the fischer projection, isn't the COOH (Carboxylic acid) supposed to be on the right side instead of on top? Since if we combine different amino acids from one another, the right most side should be the Carboxyl group and the left one should be the Amino group?

    5:16 Chirality does not refer to optical activity. It refers to the fact that a chiral molecule cannot be superimposed upon its mirror image. Some chiral molecules have no detectable optical activity due to the nature of the substituents on the chiral center.

      MolecularArts thank you. Its an odd inversion of assay for the mechanism... which she didnt describe at the time that she was discussing the basic molecular model. How many kids will go on confused by this...

    At what pH are the amino acids in the NH2 and COOH form, as shown here?

  • @Young719
    @Young719 10 років тому

    You used a Fischer projection for determining whether a molecule is chiral or not. That would not be practical... You need to draw the wedges and dashes for it to make sense.

    3:03 DNA encodes 21 amino acids in most organisms. Selenocysteine is found in all major life forms except fungi and plants. There is even a 22nd amino acid, pyrrolysine, but that is quite rare -it was discovered in Methanosarcina barkeri.

    • @altheaclaud6668
      @altheaclaud6668 4 роки тому +2

      Nope. The carboxyl and R group will just exchange places too.
      Just like your hand, you can rotate the left one anyhow but it can never be the same as your right hand. That's a mirror image still.
      Hope this helps:)
