  • A Webinar on "Propagation of culture of Penaeus vannamei in Sundarban: It’s potential and challenges" was organized by Nature Environment & Wildlife Society (NEWS) under the SAIME project on 26th November 2020, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The focal theme of the session was to discuss the pros and cons associated with P. vannamei culture and discuss its associated challenges along the trans-boundary Sundarban. International aquaculture experts, Mr. Moritz Konz, (Global Nature Fund, Germany), Dr. Stefan Holler, (Naturland), Prof. Sarder Islam, (Khulna University, Bangladesh) and Dr. Debashis De, Principal Scientist, (Central Institute of Brackish water Aquaculture, India) participated and ventilated their respective views on the topic. The scope of introducing Vannamei culture in Bangladesh with respect to the rapid propagation of the same in Indian Sundarban were also discussed. The speakers discussed various advantages of culturing the species in comparison to P. monodon (Black Tiger Shrimp) like wide salinity tolerance level and comparatively low disease proneness. The ecological risks associated with the culture were also discussed. The entire program was facilitated and moderated by Ms. Ajanta Dey, Joint Secretary, Nature Environment & Wildlife Society.
