As somebody who speaks fluent Japanese, the fact he can roll his R's (ラ) is hella impressive

In Japanese, rolling r’s this way is seen as tough and manly. It’s typically seen in “yakuza speech” and I guess not exactly formal (more so, if you’re learning Japanese, don’t learn to speak this way constantly lol although I know non-native Japanese speakers who learned this way and do it for fun with friends). Also, I know it’s also called fisherman speech, I guess because it’s just a thing. It can sometimes be more common in some dialects but it’s not necessarily in one Japanese dialect. Anyways I find this way of speaking really cool since I can’t roll my r’s, but I love chuuya and taniyama so I will admire from afar. Sorry about my mini fact ramble
I wouldn't say I would say don't speak like that AT ALL! It's very much associated with the Yakuza and a very "street" like speech, it's obviously done in anime because it's an interpretation and many things are said in anime but nobody speaks like that irl, and depends also where the person is from obviously. Taniyama-san does it great, I've seen other actors cast as a Yakuza in movies and the speech is not convincing lol
I admit I thought it was because rolling r's is a very Latin thing (basically, my thought process was, Chuuya loves wine, so learns French, can't stop rolling r's)

But it's a soft R mixed a bit with an L and sometimes even a D, you can check a video with the hiragana alphabet reading and there's the part of "ra ri ru re ro" (らりるれろ) but can also check some words containing Rs "romaji" "ringo" (apple) "roku" (six) "karada" (body) maybe in the translator to get an idea

I have noticed most of the time he roll his R's is when he's yelling or screaming and you have to listen very closely to hear him roll them when he's talking in a normal or quiet voice. Either way it does amaze me how he rolls his R's
@Zeniat Haroun apparently the Japanese VA who voiced Chuuya can speak French. Japanese people in general can't roll their R's and L's very much so that's why BSD fans took notice of the R rolls

My mom who has trouble pronouncing her R’s in English can still roll them easily despite being Japanese. Plus growing up, I found that many older men rolled there Rs in jp. Artist, Kenshi Yonezu, rolled his R’s in his song flamingo
