"A Woman Under The Influence" - mostly Gena Rowland's performance, but also the disparity between what's really crazy (Falk) and what's different but not acceptable (Rowlands)
My favorite John Cassavetes films are equally Shadows and Faces. Shadows was revolutionary in independent filmmaking. The fact that it was so well made using people who weren't actors with the dialog being improvised is a miraculous achievement. Faces is one of the all-time great films in cinematic history. Beautiful character studies as with almost all of John Cassavetes' films. A true artist, a maverick filmmaker.
Favourite film? I'm torn between A woman Under the Influence because Gena Rowlands is simply mesmeric and totally believable and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie because Ben Gazarra's character is the most completely realized character in all of American crime movies. Hollywood movies specialize in fake emotions and they get away with it mostly because the stories they tell are so far from the everyday experience of their audiences, but Cassavetes was only interested in portraying the fleeting moments of emotional truth.

Love these. Every one of his films was a labour of love and I totally agree Faces is one of the all time great films in cinematic history.
This is a very decent overview. Its hard to say a favourite- Husbands, Chinese Bookie, A Woman, Opening Night are all basically perfect.
My two favs are A Woman Under The Influence and Opening Night was lucky enough to see both on a big screen

Great choices. Two of the most nuanced performances ever captured on film.
The doofy, unnecessary music detracts from the integrity of the content.
Fine short documentary. Score is far too loud and hinders enjoyment of both the narration and clips. True shame.
