Absolutely people did. We did, probably just different generations. Just cause it’s not something you experienced, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

I agree with Florio here. Honestly, the only rule changes that seem as big as this was the NFL requiring players to wear helmets, or the various rule changes designed to protect the quarterback which changed the league into a passing league.
an already existing kicking technique of the squib kick does tend to roll fairly consistently downfield rather than sideways or backwards like end over end kick can. Wouldn't be surprised if it is heavily used, at least early until better methods are found. Can bounce it inside 20 and will probably roll into endzone rather than out of bounds.
The new kickoff rules are definitely behind the implementation of instant replay. They should also have a rule that says if the ball bounces in the field of play in the landing zone and goes out of bounds it is spotted where it goes out.
yeah coffin corner kickoffs would be dope but I doubt the NFL likes the idea as much as we do. They always want to stimulate offense including by improving field position to start drives

Really is a shame that they had to compromise overkick touchbacks to 30 rather than originally proposed 35 as that would have DRAMATICALLY increase the frequency of kickoffs being returned. They had projected near 80 percent return rate had it passed with overkick touchback to 35, estimates are now for a 55-65 percent kickoff return rate. They also predicted that the average starting field position will be the 30-32 yard line so teams that can't figure out how to pin the return team deep may frequently just do the overkick touchback since they were probably going to give up a return to the same 30 yard line area. I want exciting returns not boring touchbacks but overkick touchbacks to 30 instead of originally proposed 35 gives special teams coordinators who can't figure it out a face saving option of just booming the kick as previously. I wouldn't be surprised if kickoff return rate is only 45 percent. Hopefully then next year they'd tweak rule to overkick touchbacks to 35 and then the return rate will really go up to the 80 percent range in 2025 and beyond

For sure there will be strategy to kickoffs now, which is basically unheard of. If you’re up 2 or more scores facing a below average offense but decent kick returners, just blast it thru the end zone like usual. But if it’s late and close facing a high powered offense, you could see punters who can place the ball more accurately. That would require them to adjust to kicking off a tee though. I think this is one reason the Bears selected their punter so high in the draft. Either way it will be fun to see how it unfolds, replacing one of the most predictable plays in the game with a wild card play.
Mike keeps saying that the defense will have 10 players at the same line. That is only during the kickoff until it touches down (ground or player). Some of those 10 players on the coverage unit lined up at the 40 will stay home, or move laterally to contain and leverage the play to try to prevent breakaway runs by returners. Only a few of the kickoff coverage unit players will immediately attack the ball. Unless they are all-out "blitzing". But expect kickoff coverage defensive design to include many of those 10 defenders staying at home or moving mostly laterally to contain position. The special teams coach could even have a coverage unit player or two or three drop backwards to 45 or whatever. No requirement that all the 10 defenders who start on 40 line move straight upfield in unison. No such requirement at all

As far as throwing laterals cross field on kickoff returns I imagine it will be tried in practice by some teams but I would be surprised if it became common in games. It would take a strong armed passer like Justin Fields to successfully do a cross field lateral but I just doubt they will happen much. If it goes wrong the offense has the ball at their 5 yard line or worse. As a Raiders fan, they have had holders and punters like Ray Guy and Shane Lechler who were capable of passing yet only did fake punt passes a very few times and were only successful when they caught the opponents by surprise. Cross field laterals would be comparably risky if done on regular. Justin Fields is a threat running with the ball in his hands I wouldn''t be a bit surprised if he's back there for a few kickoff returns this season. A lot of return reps for him would kinda surprise me but a few reps wouldn't surprise me at all and who knows that may be his regular job this season
I think the biggest rule changes in NFL in my time (since 1967) have been 1978 or 79 allow blockers to use hands much more dramatically incentivizing passing offense, the 2 point conversion option after TDs, and the new kickoff rule for 2024. Had the original proposal of booming overkick touchbacks to 35 been voted in yes I think it could contend for biggest change in one year, but I expect this year a lot of kickoff teams will just concede the 30 yard line overkick touchback in 2024., injuries on kickoffs will be successfully reduced (as they were in XFL) with elimination of the "runway" where players built up to max speed before initial collisions; and then in 2025 the kickoff rule will be modified to put overkick touchbacks at 35 and some other tweaks which I'm to dumb to try to even guess at this point (except maybe return pre-announced onside kickoffs to pre 2011 alignment and motion rules where full coverage team can start as far back as kicker get a running start and unbalanced formations horizonatally). But I think the full dramatic change in kickoffs will be done over 2 seasons. In 2025 it's gonna be exciting it's gonna be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. But 2024 kickoff plays will be much better than 2023 already
though Tom Landry experimented with his "Flex" D before the rule change that allowed blockers to use hands, that really expedited adoption of schemes across the NFL where almost always the defensive linemen were shaded to one side or another on the OL across from them rather than the old school line em up head to head. So basically modern passing and modern defense in a 2 year period. As I mentioned I believe it will take 2 years with the new kickoff rule for the biggest change because the compromise to make overkick touchbacks to 30 (instead of originally proposed 35) won't be much of a dis-incentive in 2024, especially if the NFL prediction that avg KO return will be to 30-32 yard line. I do believe the new kickoff rule will be successful reducing injuries and will be brought back for future years hopefully with overkick touchbacks to 35 which will be a dis-incentive to go that route.
Every kicker is going to just put it in the end zone. It’s going to be where it starts at the 30 yard line. This will be the only season it happens and kickers are only used for Punting and Field goals.

Do the rules say that a kickoff has to be done with the T or laying on the ground? Otherwise they could either use a punt or a drop kick which would probably give more control.

So is it confirmed that if the kickoff ball hits the ground first in the landing zone (target zone) ( between 20 yard line and goal line) then rolls out of bounds that is an out of bounds kick and offense starts with field position at 40? I assumed this to be case but it wasn't clearly started when the NFL adopted the new kickoff rule in late March. Also, what happens if the ball touches down in the landing zone successfully but near the corner and then the ball rolls into the endzone then out the SIDE of endzone. Is that a touchback to 20? 30? Ball at 40? Also if kickoff ball touches down successfully in landing zone but then rolls through the endzone and out the end line back of endzone is that a touchback to 30? 20? I have heard reports claiming both ways. I have been asking NFL Operations to clarify these issues since rule passed in March but no response. I think you reporters should get clarification and confirmation on these rules so we know exactly what they are. That's part of your job

I think kicking out of the endzone is the choice I would make.
unfortunately the original proposal of overkick touchbacks to 35 was watered down to 30 apparently to get the owners vote to pass the kickoff rule change. As long as it works for injury reduction I expect it will be brought back for 2025 with tweaks including overkick touchback to 35 which will finally discourage boomed kickoffs into endzone on the fly

Fumbly Rumbly is a good name. Back in the 1960s and early 70s we would call it by the boring name "Run Ball". Legal recess soccer games would break out into "Run Ball" matches when a bully grabbed the soccer ball with his hands. Unfortunately never saw female bullies do this that's why I use the pronoun "his"
