      The last two, Mogic and Free Humans were definitely more in that pop lane. The band's first two records though, very noise concrete/avant garde kinda stuff, and their new EP is kind of the bridge between those sounds, moreso electronic.

  • @legofarm13
    @legofarm13 2 роки тому +43

    See this is why I don’t agree when people say that Anthony is a super harsh critic - this album is just full of stuff he likes, so he gave it a 9. Has any other critic given this album buzz? No. So therefore we can conclude that he doesn’t just save his highest scores for the biggest and best overall albums, he just gives them out when he deems it appropriate like EVERYONE ELSE. People who make the argument that “a 6 from Fantano is like an 8 from anyone else” have just clearly never seen any of his many reviews like this one.

    • @Vitty123
      @Vitty123 2 роки тому +6

      Yes, but I've learned to subtract 2 points from his pop scores and add 2 to his metal opines. Adjust for your own ears and he's reliable.

    • @legofarm13
      @legofarm13 2 роки тому +3

      @@Vitty123 great use of a critic! The value of a reviewer is their consistency - they don’t have to like everything that you like, but you need to be able to get a sense of how much you’ll like an album from their review, which as you’ve just said, you can. My problem isn’t with Anthony, it’s with his fans. If he gives something a 7 and you think it’s a 10, it doesn’t mean that he’s being as harsh as he usually is, and that therefore the things he gives an 8 would be an 11 for you, it just means that he didn’t love it. It’s really quite simple.

    • @RandomGuy-ii6gg
      @RandomGuy-ii6gg 2 роки тому

      You know, The Quietus has been singing praises for Dawson ever since 2014... And the Guardian, Wire Mag, and Uncut. Ya know, there are different music sites other than Pitchfork...

    • @legofarm13
      @legofarm13 2 роки тому

      @@RandomGuy-ii6gg yeah but those websites don’t really have that much pull on the public consensus, which is really what I suppose I was primarily referring to in the first place. This isn’t a TPAB, this isn’t an IGOR, this isn’t an Atrocity Exhibition - this isn’t an album that’s dominating any sort of buss or music discussion this year, and yet it’ll probably be in his top 10. That’s my point in a nutshell, all he does is like what he likes.

    I gave this one a solid chance, but I think I like it more in concept than in execution. The vocals are definitely a bit rough for me. A lot of the songwriting and instrumentation is interesting and there's a lot of depth to take in on this record, and unfortunately for me, the vocals really checked me out of the whole thing, as did some of the slower, less complex pieces of the record. I imagine that as I revisit the album from time to time, I'll enjoy it more, but it's really hard to listen in a single sitting for me. Lots of great ideas, lots of cool stuff on display, just wasn't meant for my ears. Definitely worth checking out if it piques your interest, though.

    3:17, The song doesn't mostly reference Satyr Silenus, it's about Dionysus and his various adventures.
    Verse 3 is about Dionysus and him being backstabbed by pirates who wanted to sell him as slaves.
    Verse 4 is about Dionysus and Icarius (His name is explicitly mentioned)
    Verse 5 is about Pentheus imprisoning Dionysus and then being torn limb from limb as punishment.
    Verse 6 is about Dionysus giving Midas his power to turn anything he touches to gold.
    and Verse 7 is about Dionysus going to the underworld to rescue his mother.

    Yeah, this has definitely reshuffled my AOTY list, to the extent I make one.. It’s definitely a masterpiece imo, at least so far. I have a feeling I’ll continue to feel that way, if not change my opinion to like it even more, not less. We shall see, easy 9/10.. 🤘✌️❤️🏴♾

    This album basically proves Richard Dawson as one of the most poignant, wittiest, and humanistic singer songwriter working today. Not only are his lyrics tearjerking-ly beautiful, but his knack for complex guitar playing inspired by so many different sounds is incredible.
    My god he sure is underrated
