    Since 1986, Rocky Horror has been a major friend to me. I still see it once a month. I have been over 200 times. As a teen, I was coming to terms with my sexuality. I had to do so in a time where gays were public enemy one, with the AIDS crisis. People were okay with deaths in my community. Some even with glee...Ronald Reagon (Ronald Reagan also lol).
    I was at home with the RHPS crowd. Not all the fans are gays, and yet accepted me. I think that's why my dad took me when I was almost sixteen. To give me a place where I felt safe being me.
    I had PTSD then, and serious depression. I tried to take my life. I spent much time in the hospital. I knew keeping secrets would kill me, so I started opening up. Swing Out Sister deserves some credit for my "Breakout", but so does Rocky Horror. By that time, I had the album of the full movie. I had been like a dozen times at that point. At that time, I know the movie by heart. But one only needs to take on line "Don't dream it, Be it". Richard got it from a sexy undie ad, but it is truth.
    I'm over 50 now, and I have finally found peace. I owe myself credit for the years of work to overcome my stuff. But RHPS saved my life. That's not an exaggeration. When my mood is as "dark as pitch", RHPS causes me sing and dance to it.
    Every day one can utter a line from the movie to express how they feel, sometimes sarcastically. We can quote as an affirmation.
    I know it all sounds crazy, but Richard O'Brian's creation for self soothing has soothed the world. I love her for it.

      @FaeLand Thank You!
      That reply was so long ago. They basically said gay vilification never was a thing, and I was lying. Or at least exaggerating.
      I was outed in high school and constantly bullied. I could see rage in people's eyes at my mannerisms. I felt like I couldn't go anywhere. Nationally, well I talked about that. That was all very real. Perhaps they were not homophobic, but people in privilege often try to dictate the status quo. Maybe they assume everybody sees things the way they do. I don't know, it was very rude.
      I'm going to be in Washington DC tomorrow night, so I'm going to see Rocky Horror. Check out their cast. Maybe I'll pick up a couple new lines.

      Thank you for sharing your story! The comment section can be an ugly place sometimes, but personal stories like this are just beautiful. I grew up as a Jehovah's Witness and heard a lot of sermons against "fornication" and "desires of the flesh" and this was the first movie that introduced me to the idea that sex is not evil, its the dogmatic repression of one's sexuality that's harmful. It's such a silly and goofy movie, but it has such a sincere message that has resonated with so many fans across generations, races, nationalities and spectrums of gender and sexuality.

    I knew about the 'Time Warp' song since I was a toddler as it was included in a Halloween song mixtape but it wasn't until I was 18 and on a sailing trip on the Isle of Wight with my LGBT+ Youth Group when I first watched the Rocky Horror Picture Show and it just blew my mind. When I got home I bought the DVD and watched the film so many times I've lost track. For ages I wanted to see the live show but it always wasn't playing near me even when I went to university it somehow was playing near my hometown and vice versa. However 2 years ago I coincidencetly managed to see the show live in my uni town, after my friend posted a link on FB of an article in the city paper saying that evangelist Christians were protesting the show playing in the theatre for fears it would "corrupt the youths' souls" naturally I bought a ticket for the following night reused and bought a few items to create a Frank n Furter costume and the next night I put on my costume/ make up a took a taxi to the theatre. Outside the protesters were still there hurling abuse and threats to the theatre goers dressed up to see the show, I got out the taxi and was walking up the steps to the doors an a protester a guy about early 30s yelled to me " You're going to burn in hell!!" I laughed and replied cheerfully "At least I will look fabulous anyways" and just walked in. The play was amazing, the fellow fans were great and asked if I could be in pictures with them as I was the only one dressed as Frank and the cast afterwards were so lovely and sweet to us group of fans who went to the stage door and they chatted with us, took photographs with us and they all signed their signatures in my tour programme. Simply put The Rocky Horror Picture Show is just brilliant and changed my life completely.

      Ugh. I'm from KC, and the Westboro Baptist Church chuds have easily crashed 75% of my collective concert- going experience (up to thirty-ish by my 21st birthday) a few family-oriented events after my husband and I settled down and started our family (The Harlem Globetrotters, Disney on Ice, etc.) and even some high school/college graduations, including my own. WAY before the cracks really started to show in the early 2010's (coinciding with the patriarch Fred Phelps' decline) they had already long since succumbed to the law of diminishing returns by their own hand. Because they oversaturated everything in the area for so long, 99.999% of the time the only reaction they could get from natives at that point was a snicker and/or an eye roll. (If they got one at all.) But I never saw them at our theater for RHPS!

    Funnily enough, my first introduction to Rocky Horror was a cassette of the soundtrack that my parents owned. I was too young to see the film, but I would often take my parents music as a little kid and listen to it myself, and I was always very intrigued by the soundtrack of Rocky Horror. It was the only musical soundtrack we owned, so I would hear the talking during songs and wonder ‘what’s happening here’. When I first saw the film as a teenager I was blown away. I had an image in my mind of what it was like, based purely on the songs, and was nervous that it would disappoint me. Because I was dying of anticip….. ation! Thankfully it was everything I hoped it would be and more, it’s still one of my favourites to this day. First time I ever saw this movie, my best friend & I in high school rented it. We watched and after it ended, we looked at each other and said "What the hell was that?!" and just laughed. It was so bizarre and made zero sense. But then I watched it again... and again.... and again... and it made more sense with each viewing. And finally I got to go to a screening with a shadowcast performing and it was one of the best things ever. It was just a big party.

    I first went when I was 16 and it was monumental moment as 2 years later when it returned I’d see a friends post about auditions and thought I’d stop by just to give it a chance. Turns out I was the last part they needed and was to play Rocky. I hit the gym, Got some gold undies, and put on my old gold wrestling shoes. It was one of the most fun nights of my life performing with faces I hardly knew but grew so comfortable with. The director told me he did shows monthly a few hours north of where I lived, and so I began regularly driving 2 hours north once a month to go shadow cast at a small theater that could barely hold 50 people. Sometimes it was packed, sometimes there was 5 people. Every time it was a blast, sadly I stopped going when I moved away for a few years. As soon as I got back in town though, my old director told me there was always a spot and that I’m always welcome home. Such a loving community with amazing people.

    My dad showed me the movie when I was 16 right before taking me to a showing at our local theater. That was 10 years ago and I have gone to showings every year since. I've cosplayed as nearly every character including multiple iterations of Frank, I've entered costume contests, unofficially shadow casted as Janet, and I've been the only one yelling callback lines at a show before. RHPS is so special to me especially since it is something that my dad introduced me to. My little sister is 16 now and I am hoping to introduce her to it as well. I also just finished getting a huge RHPS tribute tattoo this year (it took around 6 months to finish). I am very happy to bring the love of this film and continue its cult following into the next generations!

    Another thing Rocky Horror may or may not do (it does) is give people who are ordinary (Brad and Jane) and allow them a couple hours of freedom with people who do not judge you to be the version of yourself you cannot always be or are afraid to be. It gives them to courage to break free, even if just a little and just a little while.

    While I've only seen the movie at home by myself numerous times, I never had the chance to see it with a live audience until the summer of 2019 at GalaxyCon Raleigh as I was visiting North Carolina from California for both the con and for family- as in, it was hosted in the convention center's ballroom on the third floor and the crowd was huge. One of the biggest highlights that night was for "Don't Dream It, Be It" as the Frank-N-Furter shadow performer had a crowd of volunteers (us audience members) stand and act as his "pool". And yes, I was one of the volunteers that was in the crowd. It was great.
    Also I ended up looking like a hot mess by the end- lipstick running down my forehead, my hair covered in confetti and rice and at least one toilet paper wrapped around my neck like a scarf. Worth it!

It’s almost scary if you go back and watch it now.

    There's actually a sequel to the film called Shock Treatment. Not many of the original cast from the film appear but a lot of the cast from the stage musical appear such as the cop who played Brad, Ralph Hapschatt who played as Brad's friend from the beginning of the musical, and a few others. I actually like it more than Rocky Horror Picture Show

    • @jackfriend4u
      @jackfriend4u 2 роки тому

      I'd like to see how this might've developed as a cult/fan cinema experience...how would folks dress, which lines would they respond to, what kind of props would they bring? also hoped this would've been a good stage-show but don't know if it ever happened. the big difference with the play to screen translation of Rocky was that a great many rougher patches could be worked out before it got the bigger budget screen treatment, whereas Shock Treatment didn't get to be a stage play first. and given the story's reliance on tv screens it would've been a harder and more expensive thing to do on stage back in the early 80's. actually quite a lot of the Rocky cast and crew returned for Shock Treatment but most obviously absent were the original Brad and Janet and of course no Frankenfurter. But Richard O'Brien, little Nell, Patricia Quinn, Charles Grey were back as different characters, and joining them, Barry Humphreys and Ruby Wax. i think Shock treatment is a great fun film with a sensational soundtrack but it seems much maligned for NOT being TRHPS rather than looked at on its own merits.

    The first time I saw this movie, when it showed up somehow, somewhere, I freaked out. I only understood about half of what I saw. So I watched it again. And again. By then I understood about 98 percent of it. I took a date to watch it. She didn't understand it either. But we had a great time. I also took her to where they acted it out, a first for both of us. People throwing rice, using props, quoting lines out loud, acting the movie out in front of the screen isn't a normal movie crowd and usually taboo.
    Let me just sum up my opinion of this movie. It's fantastic. Everyone should see this movie. Not for political, social agenda reasons. Just because you'll have a night you'll never forget. Isn't that the best you can expect from entertainment?

      @Emily Vernon the voices in that cast and the band…. Everything was perfect. Jamie Donnelly ( Grease ) Tim Curry, Meat Loaf ( what can I say ) Kim Milford as Rocky. He spoke lines that were cut from the film because Ricky didn’t speak English. I also saw Kim do the same part in the 10 yr anniversary play. I can’t recall the name of out Riff Raff at the moment… it’s late here but his voice put O’Brien to shame and he was soooo funny. Our Columbia was just wonderful though I saw an understudy, possibly Abigail. The sets were scant but perfect because it was simple. Graham Garvis as the Narrator!!! That was special. The band… the musicians…. 2 or 3 of them were in Toto and the entire band was in the Wrecking Crew ( finest musicians alive ).
      I’m sorry you didn’t get to see it live. Just hearing it is good but to have been there…to have Frank shake his head a foot away from me in Sweet Transvestite….getting purple glitter all over me was a major thing. It helped get me introduced to theater. A few years later I began acting and did it for 14 years. All stage work. RHPS is where I met my first wife. I’ve seen it over 100 times but the memories from the play are still magical.
