ive always be intrigued with being a juror, at least once in my life, but have yet to ever be called for an interview or any of such thing involved with it
I just went to jury duty yesterday. First time. I was one of 22 and it went down to 18 and then they picked 6 and sent us on our way. So curious to know why I was not selected. 😅 😊
I have never been called up until now at age 42. I was excused by my doc last year as ive always had anxiety and it's debilitating. A year later im called back and nothing has changed except i choose not to take medication. I am very fearful of public transit, being alone in the big city, and i dont want to hear any bad cases it might cause me to panic and my fear is terrible. My legs go wobbly etc. I dont even drive highways. 😢
True, this applies only to the American court system. The number of strikes based on cause and no cause is different state to state and different on the Federal level and differs on the type of crime the defendant is being prosecuted for.
I get called for jury duty at least once every year. However, as a white male in a predominantly black city/county, I'm skipped over for selection every. single. time.
I knew BOTH lawyers, one for each side, and the judge was a neighbor. I thought when I was called up for the interview I would be quickly dismissed. Wrong! I was selected. I answered their questions honestly...is that where I screwed up???
You left out the other quirk here in Texas...when either side chooses the option to "scramble" the jury pool. #1 may become #24 and #25 may become #1. And then there's the old joke about the defense attorney looking across the room and telling the judge, "Your honor, I believe in the honesty and character of the good citizens of Lubbock County. I'll be happy with jurors 1 through 12!"
All of this is true and logically set out for people to understand. But you totally leave out the juror perspective. I have lots of stories about that as I was called yearly.
The last time I had jury duty, and I’m not sure if I can disclose the case details, even though the judge had said we could after he dismissed us and this was years ago all I’m gonna say is this. We were in the deliberation room for about an hour and a half to two hours. The prosecution did not do a very good job presenting their case at all. We felt like the attorney was not prepared and did not do a good job. So we had reached a verdict of not guilty and we were about two minutes from going back to the court to present our ruling. It is at that time the judge walked in and told us we could all go home the guy made a plea. I was thinking to myself dude, you were two minutes away from being not guilty That was a bit odd for me Question I also have is this if you ever get jury duty and you have a medical procedure coming up three days after it was supposed to start and your schedule becomes extremely busy in terms of job the following week what attorneys look at
Imagine a ferris wheel working like this. And this is after you've paid you fee to ride, with no refund! Also, I was on a case where the judge asked the panel if they had concerns about serving on the case. They stated that they can dismiss you for this three day case but another judge with a two week case may not. Also, one of the party's attorneys also asked the question as well. I believe that in either case it would have resulted in a challenge / dismisal for cause.
I almost had to do jury service when I was about 19 I think, but of course at that age I didn't want to do it, so I made sure to get myself eliminated early on. Now, in my mid-30s, I actually really DO want to do it, but the last summons that I got (where you have to call in every day to see if your number is picked) never amounted to anything, because my number was never called up. I wouldn't have trusted my teenaged-self to handle something like that back then, but my adult self really does want to be on a jury someday. But I feel like if I answer a questionnaire saying that I WANT to serve on a jury, maybe they wouldn't pick me because I'm too eager lol
The last jury summons I got, I didn't get around to picking up my mail until after the jury date. I sent a text message to the judge apologizing for it and he replied back not to worry too much about it.
@@bartholomew8281 I didn't have the jury['s number. I had the judge's number. For what it's worth, the judge was one year behind me in school and I knew him pretty well. I don't think I've ever heard "voir dire" pronounced that way! I suspect that I would be de-selected out of any jury duty (experience), but neither my wife nor I are ever called to begin with. I've been told that it's the "luck of the draw", but statistically, that's beginning to look unlikely (going by the people around me who have been called multiple times). I have voted several times, never been arrested for anything, legally only ever dealt with traffic fines. I'm wondering if there are any hidden parameters that the State of Maine would know about me that would prevent them from calling me. As I said, I don't think it would ever lead to my selection, but it makes me wonder how many perfectly good jurors they are missing while they beat up on the same few.
Just got my summons. I'd be an excellent juror BUT I have tummy troubles (to put it mildly) and hypoglycemia that I've been having a terrible time managing lately. I'm concerned I won't be able to stay in place as long as they need. Do they take this into account? Do they ask? How do I go about notifying them? Do I really have to take the day off from work and sit through the selection process or is there a way to notify them of this before my service in two weeks?
In one of my times, 10 people had been selected before me. A guy 4 seats down was worried, I said it was unlikely. I was selected. The next 4 were skipped and that guy was#12.
I find jury duty a waste of my time because I hardly ever get on a jury. Most lawyers will excuse me because I have a degree in mechanical engineering, or I have sued a former employer.
I have served on a Jury before and I Loved the experience‼️😊 I been called to hurt Duty 5 Times in my entire 51 years of Living ... 33 Years of Adulthood 🤷🏽♀️😁
I have always wanted to have jury duty. I am 70 years old and I have only been called 3 times in my life and never picked for anything. Very disappointing. I wish there was a way to volunteer for jury duty.
@joycewright5386 I wish you could! I would love to serve once my kids are out of the house, but I'm stressed because I have JD tomorrow and I don't have childcare. I'm homeschooling too, so it'll really set us back and I'll need to skip Christmas break to make up for it. Plus, I think we're much wiser as we mature more and more. I'm 35, but by 70 I'll have that much more perspective. You would be a blessing in the courtroom, I wish you could volunteer too ❤️ It would really save families with kids a huge hassle
And just because you cannot be on the jury does NOT mean you cannot watch the trial as a member of the public. Don't let them get rid of you THAT easy 😂 !
I have to show up for jury duty this morning. I have such a distrust in the police and legal system that I can't imagine they'd pick me. So ill probably get picked. That's how screwed up it is.
In that case, wouldn't that make you the PERFECT juror? If the State is able to convince even YOU beyond a reasonable doubt, then surely the person is guilty.
Be friendly with other people there with jury summons. It will increase your comfort level while you wait to find out and also if you're picked. You won't feel quite so alone.
Wow, i only got kicked on one over 30 years. It was a capital case and I had a friend that was a deputy DA. Picked every other time and have been a foreperson on the last one. Educators are popular as jurors and in California we get paid our full wages no matter how long the trial lasts. Less burden on other unpaid folks. It does wreck havok on your students though and you still have to prepare every class's sub plans. Jury duty isnt fun but it is very educational.
As in, you're a juror and you ask the question of whether or not the jury is allowed to determine the law and if you believe that the law is unfair, can you ignore it? Nope, you're probably fine if you ask that question. However, if you use the phrase "jury nullification" then you're probably going to upset the Judge and Prosecutor, but you're not likely to be held in contempt.
@MatthewHarrisLawPLLC -- thank you, somehow in my 40+ years of eligibility I have never received notice to appear for "selection", and at some point I also was informed that degreed engineering professionals such as myself (BS and MS) while logical by nature are also viewed as problematic for one of the trial counselors.
I don't recall any interview process when I served on a jury. There is provision for questionnaires, and for giving details of the defendants and witnesses, but they weren't bothered with in the two cases I had. Instead,, 15 go in the courtroom, 12 are picked by shuffling cards. Objections can be made but they have to be on serious grounds like being relatives of the defendant or the witnesses. (This is how it works in England and Wales, anyway, or at least in Leeds.)
Right after turning 18 I got summoned, I got out of it but I was just summoned again (3 months later, I’m still 18) so this time I’m just gonna go and see what happens. I am juror no. 1 which is crazy.
In The UK, both prosecution and defence want bored, and disinterested juries whose lack of patience will ensure a quick decision without too much in-depth consideration of the evidence.
Most defendants in my very rural area would be well advised to avoid a jury at all costs. For example, a few years ago, one 28 year old man pled guilty to the statutory rape of his 14 year old girlfriend. The judge, however, had a minimum sentence he could impose. I think that it was two years in prison. The man wanted probation only but the only way he could get that was if the jury sentenced him to that. So they had a trial for the purpose of determining the sentence. He got the maximum.
Every time I tell them that I am psychic and can save the whole bother of a trial if they just put the defendant in the same room with me so I can read him, they throw mw out.
I have never served as a juror. I showed up once having received a summons. Once there, I saw a table of about eight or so men sitting at a table playing cards. All of them had drinks and snacks expecting to be there for some time and perhaps all day. If anyone went to the restroom his buddies covered in case his name was called. It was obvious these dudes knew the system and were a small club of guys that knew how things worked. I was never called and neither were any of them. But this stuck with me. Were these guys deeply interested in justice? Were these guys who always wanted to get a day off of work? Were they somehow activists having an agenda that I might agree or disagree with?
Anyone for jury duty should be compensated equal to the a that they get at their work. This way you will get a better quality of juror instead of the retired and out of work they can afford to be on a jury for a week or more.
Could use some advice if someone sees this, I’ve been summoned for federal jury duty for a 4 week term and I live 2.5 hrs away. Do they pay daily? Or do they expect you to pay for a hotel and food gas and pay 2 weeks later in the mail.

There was a warrant for my arrest out too upon my return , plus a fine etc Anyway, l contacted the authority and explained my absences and provided proof via my passport etc and they noted that l wouldn't be called again as l had a history of living abroad and unlikely to change my lifestyle. What about our fourth amendment rights. Why do we have to answer jury selection questions or go to jail for content. Why do we have to surrender our 2nd amendment rights and tell our opinion in the form of a verdict. Why should we be forced to serve if we don’t want to. There are a lot of people willing to why force those that are not. It don’t seam American to me.

@MatthewHarrisLawPLLC yep, I get selected, sworn in, sit there while they pick other potential jurors, voir during them, etc. Then they are done, the 12 (13 or 14, really) selected, and the trial starts. My husband was not chosen due to relation to industry involved in trial and then has enough jurors chosen before him in other trials. We are now retired and haven't been given a summons in over 20+ years.Have been voters throughout that time and lived in 5 states.
That's life, right? They never want you unless you're busy. lol
One time, I had a husband AND wife appear for the same trial. They were a hoot! Only one of them ended up serving on the jury though.
ive always be intrigued with being a juror, at least once in my life, but have yet to ever be called for an interview or any of such thing involved with it
I've been called to jury duty 4 times. I got on 1 jury. The one where neither lawyer asked me anything.
@@johnmckown1267 same. Nobody asked me anything so I thought I’m home free…. But they selected me at the end….. it was a fun experience tho
I just went to jury duty yesterday. First time. I was one of 22 and it went down to 18 and then they picked 6 and sent us on our way. So curious to know why I was not selected. 😅 😊
Great video @Matthew! ❤😎👋
Thank you! ♥
Please note this does not apply to the UK. This is a US thing. In the UK nothing that is mentioned in this vid applies.
it is likely that you dont get a jury at all in the UK.
Just got a summons!
I was called about 6 times but never even got to the point of anyone asking me a question.
I hope I'm kicked off..
Why is that?
@@MatthewHarrisLawPLLC You wouldn’t understand since it’s literally ur job lol
Me too. I hate the law and there’s no justice in this country for the working class. I get picked I’m causing problems.
ME TOOO!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭😭😭😭😢
The last time I had jury duty, and I’m not sure if I can disclose the case details, even though the judge had said we could after he dismissed us and this was years ago all I’m gonna say is this. We were in the deliberation room for about an hour and a half to two hours. The prosecution did not do a very good job presenting their case at all. We felt like the attorney was not prepared and did not do a good job. So we had reached a verdict of not guilty and we were about two minutes from going back to the court to present our ruling. It is at that time the judge walked in and told us we could all go home the guy made a plea. I was thinking to myself dude, you were two minutes away from being not guilty
That was a bit odd for me
Question I also have is this if you ever get jury duty and you have a medical procedure coming up three days after it was supposed to start and your schedule becomes extremely busy in terms of job the following week what attorneys look at
Imagine a ferris wheel working like this.
I I am both exited and scared for my first ever Jury Summons, but I hope I get let in, there is a first for everything.
How do you have the jury's number?? You gotta be lying😭😭
@@bartholomew8281 I didn't have the jury['s number. I had the judge's number.
For what it's worth, the judge was one year behind me in school and I knew him pretty well. Also, his sister who married one of my closest neighbor's and his younger brother. I had all of their numbers.
That judge is retired now and I don't have the new judge's telephone number even though I've been to his house a few times.
@@bartholomew8281 I thought I posted a response but it didn't stay.
I didn't say I had the jury's number. I don't even know why the jury would have a number.
I have the judge's cell phone number. I also have the cell phone numbers for his sister and his brother. I've also been to each of their houses on a number of occasions.
The judge retired, but I have the cell phone number for his replacement.
There is another local judge who I used to have his cell phone number but never had much contact except for the two of us climbing a grain elevator once. However, he lives next door to a relative so if I should need to contact him, I'll get it from her.
My fulltime caregiver has been summoned for jury duty. Can he be excused because there is no one else to care for me?
From my one-time experience. To avoid selection, it may be as simple as avoiding eye contact with the attorneys.
1. Jury selection is complex
2. Asking questions is nice strategy to pick
3. Fairness should be considered carefully, especially with biases
Picked? I cant even get to the jury room.
Ive been summoned for jury duty 5 times. All 5 times I called the night before and did not have to show up.
And just because you cannot be on the jury does NOT mean you cannot watch the trial as a member of the public. Don't let them get rid of you THAT easy
😂 !
I got jury duty as an 18 year old and im extremely nervous, can anyone help me not be?
Be friendly with other people there with jury summons. It will increase your comfort level while you wait to find out and also if you're picked. You won't feel quite so alone.
@TaDarling1 Okay, thank you for replying. I'll do that.
I was picked as well and have no idea what to expect tomorrow
Frankly I am happy to not be selected, I didn't even get paid minimum wage in my state.
I would not like to be part of someone’s condemnation. Just got called for Jury duty.
Is the mention of jury nullification grounds for any legal action like contempt?
If you get a summons and check one of the exemptions and mail it back, is that the end of it? Will they contact you to verify your claim?
Here to find out how the hell I can get kicked out.
Jury duty should be voluntary. There are always plenty of volunteers
I’ve been selected for jury duty, but I’m an alcoholic, so unless they’re ok with me having a few beers during breaks, I think I’m a bad pick.
Hey, you never know unless you ask. 😆
Were they somehow activists having an agenda that I might agree or disagree with?
great video!
Thank you! It is an honor and a privilege to educate. 😁
If you not getting picked don't change what your doing.
That's a great question that I unfortunately do not have the answer to. When you get an answer, would you mind coming back here to update us?
@@MatthewHarrisLawPLLC I will give an update in about 3 weeks, the trial is set to begin august 12th.
What about being unemployed for the last 9 years, and also splitting my time (living) each year between 3 different countries? My partner lives in one of the countries and he pays for me financially while I’m there with him and while we are traveling together for 6 months in India, then when I’m back in my own country for 3 months I stay with and help care for my mom.
I’m not even sure I’ll be able to put my unconventional life and experiences into a framework that will make sense to anyone.
I got a summons and will need to appear in court in 2 weeks
Any advice/suggestions?
I was summoned for jury duty but was abroad at the time - l always rented my place out whenever l left the country and upon return l often didn't bother to live in my own house either.
There was a warrant for my arrest out too upon my return , plus a fine etc
Anyway, l contacted the authority and explained my absences and provided proof via my passport etc and they noted that l wouldn't be called again as l had a history of living abroad and unlikely to change my lifestyle.
Edit: l was genuinely enthusiastic to be called for Jury duty too so that definitely helped my case for permanent exemption 😅
@@MPM6785ChitChat - thanks for sharing and I’m glad you had a good outcome
I am scheduled for jury duty soon. I had chosen a date so I could get my own affairs in order. I am to show up in the court. Here's the catch. I know the local law enforcement and court staff.
I am not law, but several family members are. I know the defendant. I also know his attorney and the clerks. I expect to be excused.
I've heard of some jurors who actually want to be on the trial and express that during their jury interview get disqualified lol because the prosecutor or the district attorney might not like it or the defendants attorney might not like that lol
You can't be jailed for answering any questions during voir dire. Even if you stated that you were in favor of complete anarchy (I'm not going into detail due to YT restrictions). The honor of serving on a jury goes back to our Nation's founding. There is nothing more American. I’ve received “jury summons” a dozen times over the years I just toss them in the trash.
I've been on many juries, and have never been voir dired. Not once. Not by the prosecution, not by the defense, not by the judge. Why is that? 🤔
I'm not tracking. So you've just shown up for jury duty and started hearing evidence without first being asked if you knew any of the parties, or whether you might be biased?
@MatthewHarrisLawPLLC yep, I get selected, sworn in, sit there while they pick other potential jurors, voir during them, etc. Then they are done, the 12 (13 or 14, really) selected, and the trial starts.
Not once has any of the lawyers, judge, etc asked me questions, i.e. voir dire. I've been on, I want to say... 7 juries? Maybe 6. Out of those, I think 4 went to deliberation, a few were settled mid trial.
