Origin of Everything is a show about the undertold histories and cultural dialogues that make up our collective story. From the food we eat, to the trivia and fun facts we can’t seem to get out of our heads, to the social issues we can’t stop debating, everything around us has a history. Origin of Everything is here to explore it all. We like to think that no topic is too small or too challenging to get started.

I wish you would also touch on the point that many boy bands, especially now, have older - relative to twelve year old- fanbases. I think the BTS fanbase skews to the mid-20s, (ages 18-24 is roughly 39% of fanbase, 25-35 is 27% - at least based on ticket buying), and I think there are similar patterns there, but it's not necessarily all about childhood development as the aspects that we all need as people - I think we never outgrow the need for role models or the benefit of community/collective effervescence/parasocial relationships.

I would like to start by saying I really enjoyed the video.
I think for many fans of kpop, trainee days are often seen the same way as playing small gigs or busking is for many western artists. I know at least for bts wherever origins are brought up, members who participated in the underground k-hip-hop scene, street dance scene, and those that attended fine arts schools are mentioned. For all groups not just bts, the hours and hours spend practicing, training and performing before debut and until they reach any tangable amount of fame are always mentioned as well. There are some noted idols that trained for almost a decade under a company before debuting. Also in kpop more and more artists are producing their own music and gaining recognition as musicians in their own right and not just as products of the industry. Though at the end of the day these are just my opinions.

Um. Question!!! Why did you put bts in this if they do not follow the typical boyband mold???
      - they write, produce and compose their own stuff.
-their messages are not simple. Please go ahead and try to put their story line together yourself.
      -their fans are very diverse
Anyways did you know that while making this video? Cause if you did why did you not state that bts doesn't follow that formula??? Thank you.

no offense or hate to other boybands, i grew up on nsync and backstreet..and jonas brothers. but BTS is unlike any other kpop group or boyband i ever come across..despite having many screaming girls, their super fanbase is diverse from guys to gals, young and old, kids, teens , adults and college kids. even elders.
BTS is popular currently because they separate themself from other kpop groups and current american artists. they tackle alot of topics that are considered to be taboo/ sensitive to bring up. especially since south korea is very strict and conservative country. People who see people who have mental health issues or having anxiety sees as a sign of weakness topics such as mental health and suicide since korea is well known from for those two. other topics include, bullying, government oppression, anxiety, self love, self respect, following your dreams, motivation, etc. Another reason why bts is popular because they help bring down language barriers and promote more diversity in mainstream music. you dont really see many asian people making it huge in music. same with Asian Americans. BTS is the current perfect example of Asian Representation. Overall BTS wants their music to inspire change, spread awareness and send a positive message. And btw , BTS ACTUALLY WRITES AND PRODUCE their own music
Also bts attracts fans of hip hop, rap, rnb, pop, edm, trap, rock, jazz, blues, etc. BTS is known to do a lot of different genre over the years. two of their members were previously underground rappers.

im not posting this to send hate or anything, i commenting this to help people understand who arent familar with bts and dont seem to understand why their huge and popular. and how kpop music became more mainstream nowadays. i grew up on kpop, but never expected bts to be the reason why its becoming more mainstream more nowadays. whats funny is they never intended to break into america. they were never popular in the beginning. the reason why their huge now because they went from a group who had nothing and was poor, almost went bankrupt to becoming huge from years of hard work and dedication. plus the more they work hard, the more their fanbase grew over time.

Same. I have two daughters, 24 and 17, and both are ARMYs as I am. I was never into boybands growing up (unless you can consider Duran Duran a boyband) and well into adulthood until BTS. While I understand that the OP had to go into generalizations, I was hoping that having mentioned BTS and used them in the title of the video, she would go further than she did into how they do not fit the mold of typical boybands. Still, she was respectful of them and I appreciate that. ARMY, as a fandom, can be difficult to fully understand anyway, unless you are in it.

BTS are not like other boy bands they break boundaries between masculinity and femininity in their music, style and the way they act with each other plus they show/talk about the hard part of being an idol. Most artists only like showing the good part(the end product/their good side) but BTS are not afraid to show they have a heart and do have hard times by doing a Vlive or blogging their journey.

Something that I see media and even other fans gloss over is the fact that BTS was not formed by a company so they can have a group to market, but the company found one member to be extraordinarily talented that they had to create a group so that they can have him debut. This is what makes them different from other k-pop groups. While other company only saw profits, Big Hit saw talent and potential. Yes, the followed the usual Korean entertainment company system, but they only started the system when they saw how talented that member is.

Gretchen Miller that is not what she is staring at all. The origin from BTS lays with Rap Monster/RM or Kim Namjoon. Cause basically BigHit wanted to debut him in a group and he helped with that attracting people with his talent and music. That was how Jeon Jungkook joined bighit because he was offered by a few big entertainment companys to sign to but ultimately chose bighit due to RM.

Kim Yoongi Forrunately Bts have a lot more freedom that most other companies do, so most of what you stated about them not being allowed to do certain things is incorrect. Also, what do you mean by “feminine” look? Their style has changed from debut to now so that point’s s bit shaky, they do not act sexually ambiguous (skinship does not count), some of them do play instruments just like how some of them don’t dance except when it is expected of them for the typical choreographed statges or such and such. Lastly, BTS were not manufactured, they are original and authentic. Every member in the team today are here because they wanted to be; they decided to stick together. They are just as ‘manufactured’ as every other rags to riches American artist story. Lastly, I am aware that they are expected to portray a certain image for fans that doesn’t harm their reputation but I’m yet to see where they explicitly talked about company rules that have been especially hard in them. Except for their own personal battles, I haven’t heard them talk about company rules; it’d be really helpful if you can give me the link to that if you can. Finally, only some of their most recent songs sound like mainstream pop, it’s not a defining characteristic of what they produce altogether, just one of the different genres of which they make music. Honestly, I’m not trying to be defensive or anything; a lot of the points you made at least to my knowledge just didn’t sound right to me.

I discovered BTS in my 20s, at first I ignored them because I thought, if I've never liked a boy band before why would I suddenly like one now? But BTS was special, it was an instant connection, their message resonated with me deeply. Their authenticity, their incredible talent and awe-inspiring music that they produce and write themselves struck me as something so special, they made a serious impact in my life and opened me up to so many new aspects of life. They introduced me to the ARMY, a family, a community full of incredibly intelligent and hard working individuals from all parts of the world who come together to support a common love. As an ARMY (BTS fan), thank you for making this video!
I just wanted to add that BTS transcends languages, religions, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, and ages. We have all different kinds of people in our fandom and it’s disheartening when media or society only
portrays us as “screaming, mindless, 12 year old fangirls.”
To relate to this video, joining this fandom 4 years ago was my first experience ever in being apart of a family like this. There’s many different reasons why people adore BTS and call themselves ARMYs. For myself, the music drew me in and the meanings and their story made me stay. When I first heard their songs and saw their music videos with their choreography, I thought it was so cool! However, as I fell deeper in, I started understanding their lyrics, their messages that they’re trying to convey to us. Like you mentioned, BTS breaks the typical stereotype of boy bands that have simple light hearted lyrics. I always say there’s a BTS song for every mood because the range in their discography is huge. From simple love songs to societal pressure songs, there’s always something that can comfort you. It’s even better when they’re the ones writing the lyrics and even help compose the songs! It’s truly genuine, and you feel a sense of bond as you learn more about the members and about the underdog back story of BTS.
Because of this bond, ARMYs are very passionate when it comes to BTS and it’s so frustrating to see when people use us for clout or anger us for their amusement. So thank you for making an informative video and using BTS’ name respectfully!
“You’ll like BTS’ music if you listen without prejudice.” - SUGA (BTS member)

    1. Their music. The main reason I obviously like them is their music. The songs go from crying at your window kinda vibes to banging your head so hard you think your brain will plop out kinda vibes.
    2. The lyrics. I don’t understand most of them but that’s what we got google for.
    3. Breaking gender stereotypes and showing people that they should wear what they feel comfortable in no matter what section of the store they shopped in.
    4. Telling people to love themselves. The message they‘re spreading through their music is so important and probably saved thousands of people. Also they don’t say „don‘t be sad, just love yourself“ they say „it’s okay to be sad, we all have days where we don’t feel the best but we‘re all in this together and you’re never walking alone.“
    5. Their personalitys. I don’t think that needs a lot of explanation.
    6. How down to earth they are.
    7. Donating money for good causes (google if you want to know more lol)
    8. Paving the way for other Kpop artists to become big internationally.
    9. The hard work they put into producing the best music etc. for their fans.
    10. The fans. I know ARMYs are always seen like immature 11 year old girls that start a fight with everyone that says something slightly bad about BTS. I used to think that way, too. But once I started getting into BTS I started seeing the good sides. ARMYs all over the world support each other. ARMYs only want the best for the boys and appreciate their hard work. ARMYs give the world beautiful presents on each of the members birthdays like huge donations to different causes or planting trees like on Namjoons birthday.
    11. I could probably tell you 420 reasons more but I think my thumbs are gonna fall of and I think you get the idea.
Through getting into BTS I‘ve started judging less and most importantly I started to really love myself and I realized that there are reasons for all of us to be here. BTS stood on my side during that process and I couldn’t be more thankful for that.
    Okay one last reason:
    12. They are pretty cute ngl

Oh, yeah. I, too, can scream like a girl. With even an occasional "squeeee" involuntarily escaping. I'll get lost in a performance, the hundredth time much like the first (well, OK, second).
I was 7 when the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan on 9 February 1964. I was in the kitchen doing homework (I always procrastinated until Sunday evening) when I clearly and distinctly remember my older brothers going crazy shouting: "The Beatles are on TV!". To which my first thought was: "Well, stop shouting, get a paper towel, wipe them off, and toss them outside."
Watching that performance changed me in fundamental ways. Seeing as well as hearing the performance. Until then, popular music was something heard on a tinny portable transistor radio. Music performances were seen only in things like musical films and in the church. After that, I started watching shows like American Bandstand and Soul Train. I had developed a relationship with pop music and video.
And, right around then, I started dancing. I'm now 63 and haven't even slowed down. The leap pop and rock music made from the radio to TV and the dance floor swept me along with it. Can we talk about MTV? I was there when The Buggles "Video Killed the Radio Star" played 1 minute after midnight on 1 August 1981. Just as I was there for The Beatles 17 years earlier. One of the best things about MTV were the dance moves, along with the choreography. And now UA-cam.
I've been an engineer for over 30 years, and I look and act the part. Most of the time. But at the company Holiday party last Friday, I knew all the songs from all the decades, and enthusiastically danced all night. With folks 1/3 my age trying to keep up. Raised more than a few eyebrows. I literally had to beg and drag folks onto the dance floor. Even got the staff dancing! (On my last birthday, my best friend raised this toast: "You're not 63. You're turning 21 for the third time!")
I've never been able to make music, despite thousands of fruitless hours spent torturing multiple guitars. Until a few years ago, when I finally I took ukulele and voice lessons, and I actually became OK at both (though sheet music is still a deep and arcane mystery to me). Still, neither holds a candle to my dancing. However, for each new song that captures me, I anxiously await the appearance of a tab sheet that will let me play it. Mainly so I can change the key to something I can sing.
I do have one quirk: I prefer to like the entire boy/girl band, and not have one favorite member who surpasses all others. So one will have the best look, another will be most fit or athletic, another will have the best moves, another the best voice, another be most expressive, and so on. Something for everyone. Except for Posh Spice.
Well, OK, two quirks: I learned how to read Korean (a truly phonetic writing system). Not for the restaurant menus (yum!) but for the K-Pop lyrics. I'm able to sing along with the captions without knowing the words or what they mean! It really freaks out the young-uns when I clarify their enunciation. I really should work on learning the language itself. Someday!

I'm not quite as old (currently 47), but I do remember much of what you said. I, sir, am a lot like you, I believe. I lived for MTV and VH1. I recorded music videos just so I could learn the choreographies. I learned hiphop and rap when it just started gaining some good traction. (my fave back then was Run DMC😎) I was super stoked when I first heard Salt 'n Peppa! My first encounter with a female rap group. I was like "YES! It's not just guys that love this!" I learned how to breakdance and do all the other hiphop moves from movies like Breakin and many music videos. I've travelled along this train of music for a long time, watching different types of songs and genres pop up. Some of it I liked; and some, I didn't. I liked some songs from boybands, but was never interested in becoming a fan. I was only a fan of sports teams. But that all changed when I started listening to kpop. I liked the genre of music and everything it had to offer. But, I still wasn't a fan - until I finally clicked on the BTS video, FIRE, in my recommended videos in 2016. My world changed in an instant. I felt like I did hearing Run DMC for the first time - electrified. I'm now teaching myself Korean. It's slow going, but it is worth it to be able to see and understand videos in Korean without translations. I'm eternally grateful for all the ARMY translators. They are helping me learn and understand Korean better. Someday, I would like to become fluent enough to be able to go there. I'm in love with learning about South Korean culture, history, and language. I wish you all the best, my friend and remember, you ROCK!

I’ve never really been into boybands until bts I guess. I was always more into rock and metal but bts really caught me right from the start, which both surprised and didn’t surprise me, because once I looked into what they were about, it made a lot of sense why I got into them. They weren’t my introduction into kpop but up until then I hadn’t really liked any of their boybands besides Sechskies and Shinee, and even then, my attachment to them was a lot more casual. But I’ve never seen the problem with boybands. I feel like a lot of the shit people give towards these bands for having predominantly young female fanbases is steeped in some sort of subconscious misogyny/sexism. Anything young girls seem to like gets hated on en masse until men start liking it. Then it’s considered “cool”.

Kinda was in the same boat. I grew up listening to 80s rock and then got into hardcore metal, and for the longest time I hated on famous pop celebrities. I absolutely hated the sound of bubblegum pop and always turned a blind eye to any other kind of music. Then I discovered BTS, and watched a few of their videos showing their personalities. Then I learned the message of their music. So then I finally decided to try and listen to their music, and at first I was like ehh, but I ended up getting attached. Now I love each and every single one of their songs, and have so much respect for every member. I love them and I'll continue to love them, because they really brightened up my life and I've never been happier.

I have to say that BTS is very unique, I grew up with N´SYNC and Backstreet Boys, but with all do respect, they are nothing like BTS, I liked those boybands but I was never a hardcore fan, I started to listen to BTS music this year, btw I´m obviously not 12, and there is something about those 7 boys that is truly special, of course they come with the stigma of every boyband in the world, that they are "factory manifactured" , "cookie cuttered", but in reality they kinda not... they produce their own songs, and touch issues that in their own society are taboo, I don´t remember an N´SYNC or BSB songs with any social comentary back in the 90s, and there is something about them that you can not grasp, and I can´t describe it either, is like a unicorn, something too special that I think I would not see twice.

There's a reason only very few boybands transcends in time and space. BTS might be a boyband (for now, considering how old they are), but that's a technicality. And it's also the reason they're here to stay. Enl*stment, snubbing, racism, xenophobia, severe directed targeting from record labels that aren't associated with their current record label and more.. None of it matters. Nothing can change what makes Bangtan unique, them being real, genuine, creative and owners of their own distinct sound. Love it or hate it, they can try to imitate em, they'll never be them. Just a good or bad copy. There's a rason so many are trying to imitate what they have been doing for years, naturally. It comes off as contrived and obvious! Bangtan will be in their 30's and will still enjoy popularity and even more validation not just from fans but from their peers, which they already have. Peers as in musicians, not as in other 'boybands' or kp0p bands, no. Musicians.
Any bands could make a cover or sing a song and dance perfectly to it. Any group of hot guys can gather attention too. Not saying many of their Armys aren't drown to them cause of their looks, but any hardcore ARMY knows this is gonna be a life-lasting journey for us. Not cause we're planning on marrying the boys, no. But because we're here to support them and their endeavors simply cause we believe in em, their talent, creativity and independence. Their freedom to think for themselves, whether they make a mistake or not, it doesn't matter. They're on their way to be more and more free. Or as free as they could be considering where they're from and how society is where they live in.

BTS is exactly the new standard for boy bands. Emphasis on 'new' & 'standard'. Yes, no ones done it like them before. I know this, I'm an ARMY too, that's why I've been with them. But yes, every last single act after them are going to do the same thing with their own twist, and eventually a new band will make a new standard to surpass them as BTS has surpassed everyone else. 'The more things change, the more they stay the same.' And the cycle will thusly continue. There's literally nothing wrong with this as long as everyone is happy, healthy, and at peace with themselves. The greatest favor, the 'job' of ARMYs is to stop getting so hung up on useless western names and constructs that have never and should never matter to Bangtan Seyondan & enjoy their music. With an emphasis on enjoying their music and staying out of their personal lives, their friends & families, and in general let them have a *private* human life as Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Kim Namjoon, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, Jeon Jungkook outside of the 'BTS' life as Jin, Suga, RM, J-HOPE, Jimin, V, & Jungkook.

(I regret being a directioner) But BTS came into my life and changed my whole perspective of what my ideal type of boyband should be like. BTS really helped me in dealing with the challenges I'm facing in life and motivates me to work harder than I did. The groups I used to like, never did these for me. Love this! I think a huge part of BTS' success (in the west) is connected to the fact that those of us who were kids during the BSB/N sync era, feel so nostalgic when we here new pop music delivered in a similar way. So not only do they have large number of young fans, but they've captured the older generation too! A lot of BTS fans are moms (like me) who listen WITH their kids- that's like nothing i've seen before (my mom was definitely not listening to LFO or Hanson)- BTS are so sweet and fun, it's hard not to fall in love, whatever your age.

They're a movement. They do so much more than one may think, besides writing and producing their songs, and they don't do just simplistic bubblegum pop. Assuming that's all they do is silly. Pay attention to their lyrics, interpret them and you'll see. They write about themselves and they write with us in mind. They're artists. They're healing. They're family.

As for me, a 25 y/o, I see them as a great inspiration for those who wanted to achieve musical success. Watching about how they struggled in their debut really gives me so much motivation to do my best on pursuing music, but then again, I'm not relying on them that much. I'm just saying that it depends on each person and if they know their limits.

Boy bands weren't really my thing. Until I found Why Don't We. They were solo artists first, and became friends through social media tours and different projects, and decided to form a band themselves. All five guys play instruments and have beautiful voices and harmonies. (Member Daniel has a gift of being able to play over 20 instruments by ear!) They have written and produced songs before.
For getting so successful so quickly, they're still laid back, humble, respectful goofballs. They're hilarious and very much like brothers. They inspire people every day, and make me see that dreams come true if you work hard. They've hardly had a real break in a couple years, but they love what they do and keep going, even when fandom drama gets out of hand. They were all bullied growing up for trying to do music, but inspire people to rise above. They are basically idols of mine.
I also now love On the Outside, a new pop- country boy band, as well as RØYLS, who is more pop-rock-electro.

Although the sociological impact of what she says makes sense and I applaud her for referencing research, including BTS to fit into these molds don't always apply. As a 37 yo BTS ARMY...I actually use BTS to stay in contact with my mom. Her bias is Jimin. My dad thinks it's odd I like them but thinks it's because they're asian. I have ABSOLUTELY nothing in common with my mom and due to her lack of education we usually argue. But BTS is the only thing we can enjoy together (other than arguing which performance is better). What's funny is I'll try to find Vietnamese translations for songs for her (as BTS is global it's easy to find) and she'll judge the horrible translations. But as we both don't understand Korean and depend on multiple translations, it's funny how we can argue about this. Because of BTS their music transcends language. I remember explaining to her Singularity and she's like "this is so sad I can't listen to this anymore" lol. I also now have a larger group of friends and a new best friend and we're not only older, same, or younger age, we can all communicate the same. I was at a BTS Jin birthday event and a teenager hugged me as a thank you for coming. I'd have intellectual conversation about the BU (bangtan universe, alternative fictional universe) and be dumbfounded I'm talking to someone at least 15 years younger than me. I met a married woman in her 50s (I saw her wedding ring) in line at a Bt21 store, and after talking awhile commented that "it's nice to meet an older married woman fangirling" and the way she just got SO excited and proclaimed "but this is EXCITING and it's HEALTHY. We're not doing drugs or something stupid." BTS transcends not just language and culture, but age. The way BTS incorporate literature and psychology into their music and concepts and helped me find a WORLDWIDE book club basically where I read and share ideas and theories and learned to read outside my comfort zone.
At this point I am rambling (scuse the grammar) and I don't know how to close this.
I have so much more to say but I will say BTS does not belong in this talk, they deserve their own.
It is still an excellent talk and I loves it though. I will sub.

This was really interesting!! I'm an adult fan of BTS and feel like i'm constantly on the defensive when speaking about them to my peers who are wearing commentary youtuber merch, if you get my drift. The irony seems completely lost on people who are quick to scoff while having idols and interests with merchandise/devoted time to that thing they are a fan of. Nobody questioned when I drained my savings to go on a punk rock cruise but scratch their heads how I flew out of state to catch BTS perform live. The work ethic and journey of BTS mirrors the rock bands I grew up on. I admire it and it inspires me. It's really that simple! And moshing at a ska show is just as liberating as screaming and waving my light stick at a BTS show. The stigma is annoying and I really feel BTS will be the group who breaks it, especially given technology and their fanbase, and forces people to look at themselves and see the hypocrisy in turning their nose up at the 'boy band' phenomenon. There is substance there that is impossible to ignore. Thanks for the video!

Tbh there’s a difference between what westerners label as a “boyband” and what Koreans made and labeled as “boy groups”. Kim Yoongi nope... they call themselves a boy group. Have been since their debut, as that’s what they’re called in their home country. I haven’t seen it myself, but maybe they’ve called themselves that in a western interview to seem more familiar to the western audience. But they’ve definitely ALWAYS been calling themselves a boygroup from the start.
And again, I know there’s nothing wrong with boybands. It’s just that the western image of what a boyband is only serves to reinforce nonexistent stereotypes when it comes to bts and gives people a reason to hate more/be racist.

I’ve been a part of the kpop community for the past 7 years or so, before BTS even debuted, and Koreans have never once used the term “boyband” to describe their artists. Again, I’m not saying boybands are bad.
