  • Bernard-Henri Lévy with Simon Schama: America's Abdication and the Fate of the World. Is America in the process of retreating from its traditional world leadership role? Recorded February 13, 2019 at 92nd Street Y.
Bernard-Henri Lévy, one of the West’s leading intellectuals, takes an informed and provocative look at the state of world politics today, in conversation with historian and author Simon Schama. How are Russia, China, Turkey, Iran, and Sunni radical Islamism taking steps to assert power and influence? And what are the ramifications of the steps they are taking to undermine the liberal values that have been a hallmark of Western civilization? Join him for a clear-eyed look at the world stage, as he talks about his important new book, The Empire and the Five Kings: America's Abdication and the Fate of the World. Drawing upon lessons from history and the eternal touchstones of human culture, Lévy reveals the stakes facing the West as America retreats from its leadership role, a process that did not begin with Donald Trump's presidency and is not likely to end with him. The crisis is one whose roots can be found as far back as antiquity and whose resolution will require the West to find a new way forward if it-and its values-are to survive.

I was interested in hearing from Bernard-Henri Levy after hearing a review of his latest book. But what I ended up with in this talk was far too much of Simon Schama and I wished that he could have taken on the role of an 'interviewer ', allowing Levy to speak rather than feeling he had to demonstrate his own intelligence/thinking. Nonetheless, interesting ideas from Levy about the problems of populism.

I didn't hear it that way at all. This was a debate, not an interview. They sparked off each other to everyone's mutual satisfaction, including those within the audience who are informed and well-read.

Levi, you are a contradictio in terminis, although your last quote about the kurds was the only sane thing you said. Self determination creates strong, pride beautiful nations that want peace and prosperity for every human.

On fox, on NBC ,on CNN ,on abc but you rather only mention one of them. Schama, you lie again and again. Maybe fox is the least biased of them all. Trump wanted live coverage of the debates to make sure that the people would get the real talk.

I admire Simon Schama as a historian and as a television presenter. However I find it sad that in his defence of liberal democracy he rejects the democratic wishes of those who voted for Brexit, implying that it was little more than a response to misinformation. Whilst it is true that there was a lot of false and misleading information in the Brexit campaign, it came from both sides and was not confined to one. Ultimately, like it or lump it, Brexit was a victory for the same democracy that he defends. and to dismiss it is to dismiss democracy rather than defend it

Racism is simply another word for tribalism, which is not a shallow social construct, but a innate aspect of humanity, as human beings are pack animals and pack animals are tribal.
Trying to fight it is like a man screaming and stamping his feet at a typhoon or tsunami ,accept nature as it is instead of how we wish it to be, and find peace.
Respect one another, but keep your countries as homogeneous as possible.
The Eternal truth is that the more differences there are in between people the more they fight, the more similar they are the more harmonious a Society is.
look at the most Multicultural Societies in the world compared with the most homogeneous, you will note one vastly more harmonious than the other.
Compare Japan to Brazil..... Sri Lanka to America...... Switzerland to Paris....... the Balkans to Thailand.
"Diversity" is not a universal virtue, as the very word itself means to divide.
Unfortunately division is what some people desire more than anything else.
The oldest trick in the book is to divide and conquer.

Fascist! -that's the word that applies. you are out of bounds. you can't justify your desired atrocities by derailing attention to other atrocities. two wrongs don't make a right. please re-think your views. don't traffic in ideas that will destabilize what little goodness we have. instead, work to heal the world. but to do that, then you, like me, and everyone, have to first heal oneself. take care and good night.

Some of your examples are ridiculous. Sri Lanka recently had a civil war that lasted over 25 years. Switzerland is a country based on different nationalities getting along together. There are several official languages.

@@paintedbird1020 ..... what is fascism? Genuine question. As far as I understand it applies to any group that is collectivistic instead of individualistic. If this is the case then I would argue for fascism despite its odious implications, as I believe we can view Humanity itself in its multitude as collectivistic whether you might be a Maori, Masai African, Mayan, German or Jew. Insofar as that these identities ethnic groups cultures, or what have you, are inherently fascistic insofar as that they are group-oriented instead of individualistic.
