  • V-Twin 22HK B&S engine. Two v-belts on impeller. Homemade snowblower. Parts taken from broken blowers and modified to preform the best possible. Some modifications have been made since this video was taken. All controll is electic now, and the chute is the newest Ariens type, better preformance.

    Nice job on your blower for sure. I think in my past 50 years of using walk behinds I have owned at least 9 of course all used ones. I did all types of mods from adding larger engines - adding extra wheels and tires to help push the blower with the larger engines. Than I made one that looked something like the tracked ones today but I added to the frame so I could add another drive axle but than it did not want to turn. So than I added brakes on the axles on each side & that worked great I used that one for about 15 years until someone managed to steal it. As time passed I just got so tired of these monsters I created controlling me as with age I kept getting weaker. Well cancer sure didn't help when I finally returned from the hospital for 2 winters my adult kids paid to have my yard and snow taken care of. Than my wife passed away & I about lost all hope than my kids brought me over a new monster of a thing called a Ventrac with a 30 some HP engine the whole works. We recently had 4 foot of snow dumped on us and for the first time I actually enjoyed me no more pushing - pulling - being worn out doing my 12 wide by 800 foot long driveway using my brand new tractor and blower. At 70 now I can look back and thing why did not I do for myself my kids did for me. Thank You and I no miss any walk behinds.

    I rescued a Ariens ST350 from curbside awhile ago, and got it running with just a carb-cleaning. (So-many die that way...) Always ran well, but the attachment-drive belt would slip a bit & the chute would clog. A new belt fixed that, but it just made how sickly-weak the 3.5hp engine was more obvious. Figured an increase in HP was in demand, but after seeing yours... Well, applying all the mods you listed & just going with nearly 3x the factory-equipped seems the way to go. 10hp OHV comin'-up!

    Hi!
    Pulley is 110mm on engine, and 240mm on impeller.
    Impeller is orginal, but welded tip on each blade to get as small clearance as possible.
    Stainless steel plate inserted/welded in housing. No rust, slippery and filling out gap.

  • @Thebestyoucanget
    @Thebestyoucanget  17 років тому

    Well, it depends on what model, and what year its made?
    If its new, the two sharepins usually that brakes, is located on the front screw-shaft(two-stage blower). And they are pretty easy to change. There is also a bolt/pin on the fan who is throwing the snow, but normally this is ok, and dont broken.

    Great video. What an inspiration. My Ariens was not throwing too well. It seemed to get less powerful each year. I took off the belt housing and decided to get a smaller impeller belt. About an 1" smaller. I had to stretch the belt on with a stick. Now the impeller and auger run all the time, but it throws snow farther than ever, but just not quite as far as yours. I engage the idler pulley to add more tension to the belt when I encounter wet heavy snow. My next modification will be rubber extension paddles on the impeller and headlights. Thanks for making this video. You even made my wife laugh!

    Nice looks like a 25hp kohler two cylinder engine nice mod i love the dual belt pulleys i repair and build industrial machine tools basically every tool you would use to make all the parts to the machine. And the tools used to make your mods i rebuild and service them all. That is absolutely awesome how far it throws. And yes guys you need the dual belt setup for life on that sized motor you cant run a single belt and have it work the belts are good to 17hp so hes got two for a reason very nice build.
    For everyone else Northern Tool sells them kohler motors 2500$ the cost of a huge snow thrower. But you wont find a 25hp snow thrower any where.

    @cpspot Something that helps is to leave the impeller spinning for a little while after blowing snow... like when driving it back to the garage. this helps rid some of that extra snow that can melt and cause jamming.

    Once upon a time, I believed a snowblower was a lazy man's way of dealing with snow...then, in my custodian job, I got to use one on our sidewalks and was blown away as to how fast it did the job!! Granted, you can't use one on steps so you still have a bit of shoveling to do, but it sure helps avoid back injuries and heart attacks!

    @Philscbx I hear you... I wondered what the discharge would be like on a old Craftsman 10hp/36" lawn-tractor (Got from friend's grandpa) would be like if the engine power was increased slightly (10hp->12hp!). Took a touch of work, and a salvaged pulley to match the original engine's, but it worked... and gave some bonuses: Engine doesn't bog-down in heavy grass or on grades, so no need to change gear or increase throttle, so it always runs steady (full-throttle) & it uses less fuel than before!

    Hi The Best You can Get,
    With the tight clearance between the impeller and housing, after usage, do you ever have the problem of a puddle forming at the bottom of the housing and then freezing the impeller to the housing?
    (this happens to my neighbor, just wondering if it's common when the clearance is tight)

    Watch for an old yardman (like a 7020-1)... I did the same thing as you (with mine)... only the chute is "non ocha" everything! it throws a longer rooster tail than here! the auger is driven by a chain, not a gear. :)

  • @Thebestyoucanget
    @Thebestyoucanget  17 років тому

    Should be just perfect!
    You can use chain to drive the impeller, and you can use the clutsh inside the engine to start and stop. Only problem is drive for the wheels, who needs constant drive from the motor. But i know you can get it to work!
    If the battery is bad, you even have kickstart! :-)
    Depending on what model it is, you got about 30-40 horsepower i guess?
    Keep me updated if you going ahead?
    Good luck! Have a nice winter.

    Got the new motor in, and put a proper length belt on it...now it throws great(higher than peak of garage and 30 feet away). The old motor just was to weak to do any good, and if that old belt had been proper tight I think the motor would have bogged itself to the point of dying. If I get bored next fall maybe Ill throw some of those sheets in the chute. Thanks for the input

    A great machine! A suggestion I have is to make a commentary video in which you just explain the ratio and a few other facts about your build, upload it to youtube and then embed a link for said video IN this video so people can click the link and see your explanation instead of you having to answer questions individually.
    Did you weld those fins on the impeller or did you simply modify the originals to fit inside the smaller diameter lined housing you created?
    Thank you

    In past, I've modified a snowbird blower engine with 340 cc snowmobile engine( about 25 HP), triple driving belts and heavy duty sheaves, the performance was phenomenal and I never break a drivetrain part
    the only drawback is that a snowmobile engine is by nature instable and needed a constant attention to give a consistant performance.
    your setup is far superior to mine by the use of an industrial 4 stroke engine that is much more stable than snowmobile 2 stroke engine.

    @Philscbx For me, going that way isn't an option. My deck is twin-blade, and it uses belt safety guides to keep the belt in-place when it's disengaged at-speed & drive-disengagement brakes on the pulleys so they don't freewheel unsafely. But that is something to consider. Shame I don't have my old '57 Jacobsen Chief anymore... With it's "finned" rear fenders & cogged-belt deck with "Zerk" grease-fittings, that would sing when engaged.

    Yes, if you would like to have the rod out of the side of the engine. Its not to recomend to exceed the max rpm at 3600, but in short, no load situasions its ok.
    I have seen a lot of broken lawnmover engines who the owner has "repaird" the inefective mover, and blown the engine after tampering with the govenor... :-)
    Better for the engine to run on its recomended rpm, and alter the pulleys. (in the long run)
    Be careful, - if its not just a old engine, and you want to have some fun...

    now you got the gears turning in my head. theroetically, any snowblower could do that, its just a matter of a pully swap on the output pully of the engine, (larger) and a smaller pully on the shaft for the impelller and auger. from there you just gotta have an engine powerful enough to compensate for the decreased torque and increased speed. presicely what you did

  • @Thebestyoucanget
    @Thebestyoucanget  17 років тому

    I was worried about that myself, but my plan was to put it together, and solve problems as they came along. But after two winters nothing has broken or bendt! I am very suprised. Also, the old Areins models are very strong in the first place, and i used one of the biggest chassis to begin with.
    I made new stronger motor-mounts, and got new v-pulleys with two groves so i can use two belts to deliver the power to the impeller.
    Other than that, its pretty orginal. :-)

    That all depends on the type of snow, don't kid yourself. In 12-20" of wet heavy snow this snowblower would murder your craftsman. Not to Mention he could probably extend the intake of this vertically and allow it to receive 3' of heavy snow without breathing hard. Also these tires do not look right, they look like turf tires! I think he said he put chains on, that would help.

  • @Thebestyoucanget

    The blower has a 30-50% increase in rpm, and the auger has too. But since the auger is pretty slow as it is, you dont notice the increase on the auger that easy.
    There has been some questions lately about the technical stuff around the build, maybe there is a easy way to give you guys thats interested some more detailed info? I can not write to you individually. Have not time for it...
    Any suggestions how i should do this in a easy way?

    Skidsteer ftw lol
    Then again, comparing THAT thing, to a newholand just isn't fair =P
    So, for a snow blower, REALLY nice =D

    I cant remember now, but when i made it, i calculaded the rpm originale, and added 40-50 %. If you put to much rpm on it, it does not "get" the snow, and just blow a lot of air. Then the snow wont get far...

      Hi. Sorry, I dont know the ratio..
      Its the original worm gear from Ariens, cast iron casing type, not alu.

    One doubble grooved pulley 110 mm on engine, and 240mm doubble grooved on the impeller-shaft down in "gear case".
