    This is how I make my CBGs, by putting all the electronics on the lid, even the connector socket. This makes the wiring short and tidy, no long leads rattle.

    I bought a box of Punch Presidentes back in 2006 with the express idea of someday, maybe, trying to build a guitar. Nearly 20 years later I still have the box but have not done the guitar. This might be the inspiration I needed!

    I've only been watching these for the past couple of weeks but this is, by far, my favorite. Punch has always been one of my favorite cigars, well, at least when I smoked.

    Del... On the punch box thing...maybe put some hinges on the bottom of the punch box (inside or out) and open it like a book using the slide neck to lock it in place when you close it. Or on the top the same way on the long edge. Dont know how fesible the idea is . Let me know. Unstrung of course.

    2:22 ... that's what I do, notch it extra further the distance to where the fretboard just clears the lid...I've always built in such a way as to remove the neck for repairs or redos or work on the box without the neck getting in the way...
    Hmmm, placing the pickups (mostly the neck position pickup) under thd hatmonic nodes... interesting, I had not thought of that...
    Those cedar inserts have saved my time and bacon so many times for shimming!!!

    Good idea with the hammered paint. I got a couple pickups from amerzon that were dented. Did not discover the dents till later. i will try the paint idea! Thanks

    Hey Del, did you know that CBGitty has a part that may work for that. I may be called a neck brace. Not sure if they're meant to stiffen that area or cover gaps but looks like it could work for ya.

    Another option is to shorten the fretboard so it's not in the way of the lid. Would like to hear more about your preference to attach the pickup to the neck rather than the lid.

    • @waltdavis29
      @waltdavis29 4 місяці тому +1

      It depends on scale length, box size, and how many frets you want to hit high notes. Plus, overlapping fret boards have a better appearance. After you build a couple hundred you’ll understand. Or, as I sometimes do, you can make a bolt on neck which changes many characteristics but overlapping fret boards aren’t an issue unless you have a crazy back angle. But that’s a whole other subject

      Th pickup being mounted on the neck is totally arbitrary, all that matters is how far down the length of the string the pickup is. you could hold the pickup in your hand and hover it over the strings, and the tone will be no different than mounting it to the box, or to the neck.

    • @N8Dulcimer
      @N8Dulcimer 4 місяці тому +1

      @@waltdavis29 It does not take hundreds or even dozens to understand these concepts lol. The vibrating string length of a CBG, and the number of total frets should be decided based on the box size. You are literally watching a video about how an overlapping fretboard IS an issue in this case, and talking from a place of authority to say that it never is, lol.

    Shalom, Shalom Del, what vid do you have that shows how much to rise the tail of the neck to get the right angel to play when you want to not use a slide? I have tried a bunch of times and Never can get it. They always are to high it seems. So I'm always useing a slide. Thx.

    nice! i got a question about grounding the hinge. i have a bridge with a base of steel but the sadles are made of aluminium, so i dont know if its gonna be usefull to ground that base only.

    • @rohlfing63

      If the saddle and bridge are both conductive, and not insulated by paint or some other type of coating, it should work just fine I expect.

    • @elpochoclo4502
      @elpochoclo4502 4 місяці тому

      @@rohlfing63 yeah but i dont really know if the grounding of the bridge is expected to ground the steel strings also. Because if the strings have to be grounded then i have little problem for those aluminium saddles (its a diy bridge for a 5 string)

    • @rohlfing63
      @rohlfing63 4 місяці тому

      @@elpochoclo4502 yes, ultimately you're trying to ground the strings, so if you have metal strings on a conductive bridge and saddle, and ground the bridge, you should be fine. You can verify if you have an ohmeter, to make sure you have low resistance across your bridge/saddle pair.

    The bridge placement is very non-optimal. Typically placing it near 1/4 the vertical height of the box will result in much better tone. A bridge too close to the edge will sound nasally and hollow, while a bridge too close to the middle will sound muddy and unclear. Of course, 99% of CBG builders don't care about tone at all and are planning on getting all their tone from an amp either way....
