Between December 1989 and April 1992, 7 young backpackers, all aged between 19 and 22,
vanished in New South Wales, Australia. What should have been the adventure of a lifetime
would prove to be a living nightmare leading to their untimely deaths. Their remains would
later be found in the Belanglo State Forest. Though badly decomposed, the bodies would
show signs of torture and a brutal end. One intended victim, however, would manage to
escape, and help police bring a ruthless, sadistic serial killer to justice. This is the chilling
account of the Backpacker Murders. This is the case of Ivan Milat

This case hits hard. I went to college with James Gibson’s brother, and he and his girlfriend spent months and months travelling up and down the east coast, trying to find James and Deborah. It was a nightmare, a complete nightmare, and learning what actually happened to them made it beyond horrific. It was a time when it was fairly common for young people to go up to Northern New South Wales, find like minded souls, and drop out of sight for a while. Things were very easy going, informal, and the Rainbow Tribe has always been welcoming and easy going. I met a few suss people here in Melbourne through my friends who were part of that scene, a lot of people drifting in and out of Australia, usually gravitating to the next festival, or coming from wherever the last one was, here or overseas.
I’m not sure people are so trusting now.
But I am certain Milat is now experiencing eternal justice. What I feel about him is unprintable. But what this case highlights, intensely, is the difference between good and evil.
Emma when l saw you were doing this case, I had to prepare myself, brace myself. But honestly, I wouldn’t want anyone else to cover this case and honour the victims. May they Rest In Peace.🙏
I trust you Emma, I knew this would be sensitively handled. Thank you.🖤

Back in 1986 I worked in a Newsagent at Denham Court (a small shopping centre) near Liverpool, Sydney. He would come in at least 4/5 times a week to buy his daily paper, snacks & etc.We were even on a first name basis he'd call me Kimmy K & call him Ivan the terrible ,funny enough & he'd told me more than once. You dont know how terrible I am, which of course I laughed off...I had no idea as he was such a friendly & up beat kind of guy always with a smile and a joke.Never in a million years would I have thought that he was capable of what he done as he came across such a genuine & friendly guy.Shook me to the bone to see him years later on the news being found guilty of these horrendous crimes. It showed me how easy these Socialpaths can blend into society so easy.Thx Em's for sharing.Greeting from Oz ☺

Hello. In answer to your question, yes the police did search after the bodies of Caroline and Joanne were found and they did cover the close vicinity but Deborah and James were found a considerable distance away. They weren't found nearby, at all. The Belanglo Forest is big, with rough and difficult terrain, broken up by gullies ridges etc. There was no indication there were other bodies in the woods after Caroline and Joanne were found. Nobody had any idea where the other backpackers had even disappeared, to be be fair. Could have been out of NSW entirely for all anyone knew.

I have always said that it didn’t even feel like my parents raised me. It was my older siblings that put the time & effort into that. My siblings fed us, put us to bed, took us on (mini) vacations, etc.
My parents were working to provide & tried to be there when they weren’t working. But, there are only so many hours in a day.

Hi Emma! I'm actually part of the more than 200 who've been waiting for your take on Ivan Milat. And as expected and more, you never disappoint! I just want to thank you though for, not just bringing up additional facts that I did not know before. I must have watched tons of docos on Milat, and I did not even see from any one of them the fact that he tried to fake his own death by using the famous suicide spot here in Syd "The Gap". As someone who moved here recently, it's just really helpful tbh that you always remind us that victims of serial killers, especially as vile as this one, are indeed human beings who were and will always be loved and missed. That they're not just body counts. I think that's what ticks me off in most crime shows. That they're more focused on sensationalizing these awful individuals who kill and destroy, and in a way end up dehumanizing the victims and ignoring their families' pain.
Your take as a psychologist and a n empathetic person is what really makes a difference. Truly. I've watched your takes on cases way before this yt channel and I'm forever a big fan. x

I just want to thank you Emma for a job well done on this case, not that you don't do a consistently good job on every episode. As an Australian living in NSW and as a young mum back in the years when Milat was "out hunting" you bought a lot of those feelings about the case back for me. I remember all the media coverage and the lines of Police in the forest inches apart looking for any clue they could possibly find to help solve the murders which Milat was responsible for. My ex husband was working in the Department of Corrections back then and although he never had any personal experience with Milat, I do remember Milat's notoriety as an absolute SOB and he was CONSTANTLY complaining about something and the PO's hated him. He was easily one of the most notorious prisoners in custody in NSW Prison's when he was alive and there were MANY evil predators inside at that time. When I look at the photos of his victims I see youthful wonderful and individuals keen to experience life in all its glory and that psychopath blew it all away and that was SO wrong! They would be in their 50's like I am now and they would have likely had interesting stories from their journeys to tell their OWN families and Milat stole those futures and their stories! I still remember listening to Carolyn's parents being interviewed and talking about their daughter and their grief was overwhelming. I wondered what my own parents would have said if I had been the one in THEIR country who had been murdered? I'm so glad that you mentioned the other possible cases which remain unsolved and to which Milat, on his death bed, refused to discuss because he KNEW how much the Police wanted him to come clean about, but he was going to maintain his silence and his control until the bitter end. I have NO doubt that his actual body count was MUCH higher than 7..As an ex RN who worked in Palliative Care giving my patients a "good death", if I had been nursing Milat upon his final illness, I would have done my job but given no extras as I enjoyed doing. But there would have been a degree of satisfaction watching him leaving THIS world and departing to a steamy Eternity in Hell to be greeted by Satan himself. "By their fruits you shall know them"! I hope that if ANY family member watches this video or reads these comments that they will understand that I, like the others here I believe, feel that this case was well done and respectful of the families and individuals involved. My sympathy goes to each of you who lost a loved one! fNow finally to Paul Onion: "Sir, you are a hero and THANK YOU for your courage in coming forward. I wish you all the best for a long and happy life"! Thanks Emma and I think I enjoy each episode I see better than the one before! Take care now!

He was a horrible man and I believe he is now reaping what he sowed! I used to go past the Belangelo State Forest frequently when my youngest daughter was at boarding school down past there at Bowral. @@H.R.B. Thank you Henry for your kind words. I absolutely LOVED being a nurse but I was born with a dislocated hip in late 1964 and I am grateful to have been operated on in 1966 as a baby and to have been given the gift of being able to walk normally for many years. But my Orthopaedic Surgeon back then warned my parents that eventually I would need a hip replacement and I would likely develop arthritis early which I did. By the time I was in my mid 40's I had had 8 orthopaedic surgeries and my hip at the moment is in a very advanced state of degeneration and even though I will get a hip replacement when I am mentally prepared for it it won't fix all the problems because my hip joint is degenerating all over the hip not just the ball and socket. My GP told me years ago that I picked the worst profession to go into becoming an RN and I eventually had no choice but to medically retire as I would leave after a shift and sit in the car and cry until I could settle myself enough to drive home. I spent my last 3 years of nursing working in Aged Care, long story there as to why, doing night shifts with just one other staff member and I said to myself that when I could no longer trust that if there was an emergency with a patient that I could walk there, as it was a very long building, and deal with the situation, that I would leave. I wasn't going to put someone else's life on the line because of my increasing pain and disability. But leaving was hard as I wanted to give something back because I got the opportunity to live a normal life due to the care which I received as a baby by the wonderful Nurses and Doctors back then. I didn't work in Corrections for that long and I worked in many different specialities but it was a privilege and an honour to be supporting patients during some of their most difficult days. I really felt bad after I said what I said about Milat because he was STILL a human being and a higher power than I will judge him and its not my place to do so, but he WAS evil. All the best to you and thanks for your reply!

She does this all the time and it’s offensive to professionals(and not just police) who know more than her. Police knew these people were missing, but searching the entire vast wilderness for someone who might not even be dead is not realistic. People go missing all the time. Even if you have good reason to think someone is dead and have an idea of the general area the body might be in, it’s still easy to miss the body. It happens all the time. Dozens or even hundreds of people search an area and find nothing then later on the body is found in that area and they missed it.

You notice in this story once the police have an actual lead to go on they solve it pretty effectively and arrest the man responsible. I watched a documentary about Milat a few years ago and although I came upon others, I didn't have the stomach to listen to the story again until I heard that you would guide us through the completely disturbing reality of what those poor backpackers must have experienced in their last moments here on earth. It feels a little safer hearing these horror stories when you are telling them because of the compassion that you have for the victims.
I wish I shared your belief that there would be an eternity of retribution waiting for the likes of him in the hereafter. I think the prison guards should have made use of what I think was the last chance of some measure of justice and instead of giving him pain medicine on his deathbed perhaps rather built a small brick fire and applied some hot incentive to his remaining little finger to give closure to the families of other victims. They may have gotten a little more co-operation out of him
I also hope that the policeman who took the initial statement of Paul Onion was traced and suitably disciplined for gross dereliction of duties and criminal failure of connecting the dots and lack of showing initiative.
It is extremely disturbing to contemplate that there may be others like him out there. The world after Covid-19 became more dysfunctional and I heard a story recently of two sixteen-year-old youths beating their Spanish teacher to death with baseball bats because she refused to give one of the entitled brats a grade that he did not deserve. If anything, the world is more dysfunctional today than what it was in the late eighties and early nineties, and I don't even want to contemplate what horrors sick and disturbed predators may get up to in these times. I really don't understand why some innocent souls fall prey to sadistic predators have to endure such degrading and nightmarish deaths and when we will be able to spot the reject sadists who enjoy inflicting pain and debasing life and remove them from society before they are able to torture, maim, and kill.

Great episode, thank you. This is one of the most interesting cases of serial murder and I have watched many programmes about it. In one the point was made that Ivan Milan didn’t drink liquor and the question was raised whether the contents of the alcohol bottles found had been consumed by an accomplice/co-perpetrator, or by an alter-ego living in Ivan’s physical body. I would be interested to hear your take on this.
I agree about Wolf Creek - the villain even looked so like Milan he could have been playing him in scene-reconstruction sections of a documentary. Same modus operandi except for how he got hold of his victims. That was pure Bradley Murdoch, the man convicted in the Peter Falconio case, another intriguing Australian tourist murder. Apparently there were protests about screening the movie while Murdoch’s trial was pending.
