I was there and I will never forget it. We lived in an apartment on E 2nd St and actually jumped out the upper floor window in order the shovel snow away from the front door.
Wow what a storm. My dad described it to me years ago. He and mom had gone to the restaurant on the hill by the domed church. It was their 48th wedding ann. They got there around 6:00. By the time they were going to leave it was snowing allot. When they got to the west end of Duluth dad knew it was no use trying to go up the Duluth hill. They wouldn't make it. They lived in Esko. They stopped at a motel to stay the night. Dad parked the car in the place in the parking lot where the wind was blowing it clear. Only draw back was all the programs on the TV that night were spook stories because it was Halloween. The next morning they drove home and had to park their car way at the end of the service lane along hwy 61. They had to crawl over the huge snow bank to get to the service lane and trudge in almost though high drifts to get home. They were both 71 years old at the time. Kudos for dad he always knew what to do to keep safe. Miss them both. Thanks for the memories.💜🥰💜
I was a senior in HS at Harding Senior High when the blizzard hit. I was coming home from work at the old Ramsey hospital and it look like a nice snowy day. Then it hit hard. A few days later we wet to Cub to get some food, and people were fighting for the food! Our car got stuck. It was awful
lived through it with three teenagers in the house, they got to help shovel us out! lol The transformers on our block kept arcing all night so we stayed up in case they caught on fire. School bus in the ditch, and the tow truck couldn't get it out, kept slipping. Walked four blocks to get supplies at the grocery store, took a long time, thigh high snow to plow through. It was kinda fun living through it.
This was the first morning of my 15th year of life. That Halloween night, my grandparents barn collapsed, instantly killing or fatally maiming 45 head cattle. We spent all night digging out the corpses of the cows to butcher and hung them from the broken rafters. While traumatic, giving everyone steaks for Xmas slightly made up for it.
it is odd this year as well, we had band after band of severe storms in Duluth, most missed, going immediately south or north, but the one that hit us was a doozey! we lost power out here for about 4 days, and it was almost a week before we got power back at my work.
Hello I work for one of the local news stations in Duluth. They'd like me to do a retrospective piece on this storm. May I have permission to use portions of this UA-cam video...mostly just the home video stuff at the beginning. Let me know, thanks :) Incredible storm!
+Heavy Metal Weatherman yes, proper attribution of course, just use the name Jeff Harrison, we shot the home video portions ourselves, or, if it works in your format you can use the UA-cam channel name.
Drove the kids a mile down our road so they could trick or treat. No snow. By the time I got back to our place - I had a hard time getting into the driveway - so much snow had fallen.
I was 13, and living down in Brooklyn Park at that time and we got very close to what Duluth received. It was a huge mess and took forever to shove out our driveway, lol.
Just bumped into this old video, how weird that at 8:45 the doc compares the storm to what would happen if a virus swept through the town an uproar in the public health sector and the subsequent damage! hmmmm prophetic?! Hats off to Dr. Skip Hofstrand!
Was living in south mpls when the blizzard hit.Was working for a realty company so I spent 3 days shoveling and snowblowing......Worst blizzard I've ever seen.At one point only 4 wd vehicles could move. There was ambulances and cops following snowplows. This was in downtown and south mpls...
My dad still lived in our home in South Minneapolis and said that he got six trick-or-treaters on Halloween night before they gave up. I guess Halloween was rescheduled for a week or two later because no one wanted to be stuck with all that candy.
You keep the vehicle moving; if you stop, you'll get stuck. You do very slow rolls through stop signs (cops won't cite you). If you HAVE to stop (at a light) you try to drive over fresh snow (rather than following tracks) because existing tracks quickly become icy. If you start to skid (in a front-wheel-drive car), steer into the skid to regain control (not in the opposite direction). I now live north of Los Angeles, but because of our altitude, we do get snow every few years. These California drivers won't slow down, and hundreds of vehicles end up in ditches. If you have to learn to drive in snow, practice in an empty parking lot first to learn how to recover from skids.
How u control the vehicle depends on if u have a front wheel or rear wheel drive car. Start driving while ur young, Drivers Ed & Behind the Wheel & yes, you practice. In empty parking lots. at night. with ur friends after a fresh snow. whipping sh*tties LOL On the road irl, u creep along on side roads-no traffic & work ur way up over time!
Hello, the 30th anniversary of this storm is coming up and I'm working on a project to commemorate the storm. Could I get permission to use some of the video you took at the beginning of this clip? I would give you credit! Thank you.
Sadly no, Megan caught a squirrel, let it go, and then died the next day of organ failure. Our theory was that at 15 years old after catching that squirrel she had nothing left to live for.

Wow. Snow in MN. That's certainly odd. Sheesh. I grew up there.

36” of snow in one storm in October is normal? Your a fucking moron 🤣.
Was living in Duluth with a small child but it didn’t stop me!

"It is simply to dangerous for anyone to be outside right now." As she's reporting outside lol

Carcasses*
Corpses are for humans. Anywho, carry on.
Well, once a 15 year old, you’re now nearly 45 years old and I bet That incident made you the good man that you are today.
Thank you

@ 8.42
"If we had a virus come to town"
29 years later.
Wish he had not said that. It has come to pass.

Bet the tree got wood after spanking I did, the county pulled off all the plows that include the drivers ?
She swept those trees good. :)
She sure did! And She's a cutie!!! :)
Took my son trick-or-treating!!
boss be like " u still coming to work tho rite?!"
Man! How do you guys drive in that snow? I would need lessons before I moved there.
You just aim in a general direction and let the momentum of the car carry you...
You keep the vehicle moving; if you stop, you'll get stuck.

Sure, let me know what you come up with.

Lord. In Georgia, we don parkas when it drops to 50. Barely exaggerating.
Godspeed, y'all. ♡♡♡
How many people had video cameras in 1991 you ask? TV and that guy
I Remember This !
Tell me the dog is still alive?
Sadly no, Megan caught a squirrel, let it go, and then died the next day of organ failure. Our theory was that at 15 years old after catching that squirrel she had nothing left to live for.
Also if she was still alive she would be 37 years old!
If we lived there and if my boss didn't like calling because couldn't get there the dude could stuff it it's your life
MOIRJ FREEZER ENDLESS MOIRJ FREEZER
That was NOTHING Ralph, compared to what I made my "Dear and Boo" do in Plymouth. MN-- NO VIDEO @ 29 inchezs
Inside you lol
These times are coming back but it will be worse. Solar minimum comes in 2032 and it will get cold because the sun will output less.
