Loved that glimpse of the Temple in that look along Park. The Schaffer Street Playhouse also brought a smile. I might have been on campus when this was shot. I started in August of '77.
Fantastic! I started as a freshman at VCU in 1978. Live in 808 W. Franklin a few doors down from the Art Dept. Brings back great memories. Was the best 4 years of my life! Thanks for this run through of VCU and Grace St (Lee Arts sticky floors and all.....LOL)
Amazing (and scary) to see yourself in a random UA-cam movie 40 years later. I ride through the scene on a bicycle at 3:30 and point right at the camera. So happy that Mr. Hamm captured the beautifully funky Richmond/VCU I loved, and sadly no longer exists.
WOW! that's amazing! I wonder where were you riding to? it's cool that you actually pointed at him as you rode by! this is one of the reasons posting this video has been so incredibly interesting... so many people still remember Richmond during this time... I was a 1 year old.
Very cool...I can't be sure, I could have been in there, as I was on campus about then...I'd forgotten about that Phillips 66 gas station basically right on campus.
Wow. This really brings back a lot of memories. I grew up in The Fan, had my first communion at Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1978, and my dad ran the Biograph theater from 1972 - 1983. I was a Fan kid and spent so much time on W. Grace St. and all around the VCU campus. Thanks so much for posting this. :)
I entered into VCU as a Freshman in the Fall of ‘98. I lived on 1100 block of Grace St. it was the funnest place to be in the world at the time, for me atleast. W. Grace St. will always be my fav street in Richmond. But I loved the entire fan and Shockoe Bottom as well
Is your father still around? I’m trying to find someone who worked there in the early days : slantblog.blogspot.com/2018/02/biograph-times-first-year_11.html?m=1
Glen Hamm was my first period Art Foundation life drawing instructor. The first day of class, the first year of University, and my first naked woman, all in the company of Mr. Hamm. I loved that guy. He was funny, bright, and as excited to be there as we were, it seemed. Many years later, 30 or more, I had done a little digging and found that the BoingBoing.net editor Xeni Jardin was in fact Mr. Hamm's daughter. He had shown us pictures of her as a small child during classes. Anyway, about another 5 years after that, I was in the Urth Café in Santa Monica when I caught sight of Ms.Jardin in line behind me. I puzzled and puzzled over her face. I knew that face! Then it hit me. She is Mr. Hamm's daughter!! After I got my order and she sat down, I made my way over to her table and excused myself and said, "You are Glen Hamm's daughter, aren't you?" She was STUNNED. I then proceeded to tell her about seeing photos of her when she was small and how he was my favorite teacher at VCU, and many more stories of her late dad. A lot of tears were shed, but it was great to tell someone that their late father had adored them so much that total strangers knew all about them. Thank you for this trip down the years to the best days of my life, 1976-1980 at VCU, School of the Arts, and a glimpse of the one man I can say was a true mentor and one of the best influences on my life as an artist and indeed as a human being.
OH MY GOD!!!!! I was there at this time! i was a student at VCU from '76 to '80 and the late great Glenn Hamm was my very first teacher on my very first day! A master of the figure, and the nicest human being on the face of the Earth! I had the pleasure of meeting his daughter Xeni Jardin, in Santa Monica CA last year, but that is another story. Do you have any more films of this time and place???
@dadman85 Hi , thank you for the comment. It's great that this little time capsule can bring so many great memories for everyone!! please feel free to share it with anyone else who might appreciate it!
@EddyHouchins Hi Eddy, thanks for the comment. This is the only film I have. That's so cool that Mr Hamm was your first art teacher at VCU! What class was it? I've been fortunate to meet many people who have shared fond memories of him as a teacher. It's good to know that people still remember him for one of the things he loved the most in life -- teaching! take care!!

I actually re-created parts of this film - including "random cool guy on a bike waving" -- here: ua-cam.com/video/3Tprft-JWpU/v-deo.htmlm

I had a film class at VCU that was taught by a guy connected with the Biograph. Was that your dad?

Nice great shots of the Old Fan and cars of the time. What a great place in time.
Yeah I was surprised how old those cars were! Which means?!
I attend vcu right now. This is so lovely to watch.
