I rarely comment on public platforms but would like to chip in some few points. I can totally relate with your experience in practice and won't fault your conclusions. I guess you were part of the "I must do litigation crew" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣.
However, my two cents. Law practice is not based on just litigation. Many aspects of practice are springing up and practitioners (including students) can move into these areas to develop their skills and expertise. I did litigation for a year (Nysc) and moved into a commercial firm thereafter.
The major problem we have in Nigeria is the resultant effect of demand and supply. The legal market is so small that viable opportunities are so limited. For current law students, my counsel is to ensure they graduate with a very strong cgpa in their undergrad and law school. Secondly, find a niche you like and tailor your strengths into that (gone are the days of know-it-all). Embrace technologies and don't be afraid to explore non-conventional areas. Lastly, place God at the centre of your plans.
Whether in Nigeria or outside, law practice is no joke and it takes a deep conviction to remain in the profession. I have been working in the media, technology and telecommunications industry for close to a decade. The skills and experience I have are easily transferable regardless of the country I move to. Do I have to write the bar exams there? Of course, but I won't be starting from ground zero.

Good day sir, please as a law student, which aspect of law do you think has a better prospect in a country like Nigeria
@@Abdullah-eb9xt Commercial practice will always remain a viable practice as long as businesses continue to exist and thrive. Now, my counsel is to examine the different sectors (businesses in and outside of Nigeria), look at the prospects of that business and narrow interests. For instance, so long as Intercontinental trade continue to exist, maritime law will always be relevant. Secondly, conventional banking is being replaced by ebanking, e money platforms (flutterwave, paga etc), that's another area you can focus on. Real estate is a good practice too and positions you for different opportunities. Wealth management (portfolio management) is another area that continues to develop.
Risk management is another aspect of commercial practice.
Data Protection is fast becoming a big deal in and out of Nigeria.
Oil and Gas practice is there too. Taxation is huge too.
So in all, just review the different areas of commercial law and chose the one that suits you best.

Non conventional practice are those evolving areas of law. Data Protection, risk management, portfolio management, EV engineering/industry, e-businesses etc.
The potentials continue to grow and my belief that a practitioner should acquire transferable and marketable skills. I've since moved to a conglomerate comprising businesses in the automotive, infrastructure, health and pharmaceuticals industries.

This is so painful. Everything is different in Nigeria. Sometimes I blamed myself of spending such time in school. People are still rushing in, parents are still pushing their children to study law. I'm sorry you have to go through all these sis❤️❤️

In my final year in the university studying law and I’ve interned to see how the judicial system is and tbh I can relate because I know litigation isn’t for me. Nigeria has killed my interest in Law. I’d probably just be a legal consultant. Right now I’m learning other skills so I can find a better career path

I totally relate cos my baby brother is a lawyer, paid millions to study law in Babcock University, paid more for law school in Abuja then at the time he was about to start getting frustrated he went to Canada to study MBA and I must say he made the best decision. It's actually possible to veer into some other path cos i see no future in law.

I totally agree with you, however since you are in UK, you can make the most of your law degree by taking the QLTS exams and qualifying in England and Wales. Luckily solicited and barristers earn a good amount

Wow thank God I saw this on time,I'm currently waiting to be admitted to study law but what gives me sleepless nights is how expensive studying law is,I don't really know what to do and everyone I turn to for advice will just tell me that when I get there that I'll adapt am just so confused
Honestly this is my predicament, I personally don’t want to go and I want to focus on building my fashion brand which I have so much passion for., but my parents are pushing me
Nothing is a waste, but go with your passion and what you love. The problem with Nigerians is that many end up doing what their family or parents want them to do, many have missed it. If you are abroad or plan to immigrate, be aware that your profession does not count. I have seen IT professionals earn much more then lawyers, Doctors, I have seen Top nurses and Doctors earn so much. Law in the UK is very competitive you need to know your stuff exceptionally, the good thing they specialise.

Hello Tochi, I understand your point and, probably, your frustration. Law is one of the most flexible programs or courses of study in a university, because after graduation, you can do anything with the degree. BUT studying law in a country restricts one to practice only in that country, because every country has its own (her Own) legal system. Engineering and medicine are unique in that you are taught the same thing everywhere in the world. With some countries like the USA, foreign medical doctors are re-tested and re-licensed so as to practice in the country.
For the legal practitioners, it's a bit different due to the different legal systems that nations operate. You schooled in Nigeria, but, probably, did not know your future spouse would take you abroad. Femi Gbajabiamila, former Speaker of the Nigeria's House of Representatives, had a law degree from the University of Lagos. When he moved to the Atlanta area, in the USA, he had to go back to school to prepare himself to pass the Law Board in the State of Georgia, USA. So also, was Ovie Omo-Agege, the last Senate Deputy President, who had a law degree from the University of Benin, only to go back to school to brush up for the law exam and licensure at Tulane University in Louisiana, USA. Unfortunately for these men, they brought their corruption mentality from Nigeria, and into their legal practice into the USA. That resulted into the revocation of their licenses, thereby forcing them to return to Nigeria.
You are based in the UK. In the USA, you could venture into Real Estate and other professions with little preparations.
I thought UK and Nigeria has about similar legal structure, what happened? Of course, having children and going to school is not easy, probably that could be why.
I specially appreciate you. I'm a law graduate but my family can't afford my law school yet. May be the Universe has given me an opportunity to have a reasonable source of income before proceeding with my legal career sef. Being called "Barrister" alone neither puts food on the table nor pay the bills. In fact, the title itself creates more responsibilities, because not everyone out there can understand that a lawyer too can be broke when they need a lawyer's assistance. Lol. Thanks a million times

Tochi Esther, I beg make you no vex. You are right; the law profession is a very good profession; but it requires you to practice in the country where you trained/studied. I met a man in the USA who just came in through a law firm sponsorship. I got introduced to him by a Kenyan friend. After exchanging greetings with him, he introduced himself, and told me how he came into the USA. He stated that he was a Prosecutor for 20 years in Lagos. I tried to be nice to him by trying to advice him about the differences between the legal systems in Nigeria and the USA. Even though I am in the health profession, I felt of helping him out, by advising him about law in the USA. This man took offence, and claimed to have worked extensively in the legal field in Nigeria. He rejected my advise. Less than five months after, I met him again at the same Kenyan friend's work place. Mere looking at his face, I knew that things were not right because he looked dejected. I inquired from him how the job was going. He told me that he was no more with the law firm. I simply said ok, and did not ask why. Later my Kenyan friend to me that he lost the job, because, per the Firm, he was a "bad lawyer". This is a man who refused to listen to my advise.
The Law Profession is unique, and is based on the legal system of where you were trained. So, Tochi, again you are right by showing you frustration. I beg stop "vexing".

I’m a lawyer myself, and 5 years in university and one year of sleepless night in law school, was all for nothing. Apart from the measly salary, the rule of law is a joke in Nigeria.

I don't see the need of studying law school in Nigeria if you're not going to practice here
Tochi Esther, I understand your story and frustration. Law is a noble profession, but the downside of it is that if you studied law in a country, what they teach you is the legal system of that country. That makes it very difficult to leave that environment for another in terms of securing a job; unlike some other professions like Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Computer Science, Engineering, to mention just a few, where you only need some basic transition. The options most lawyers have is to go back to school and get retrained on the legal system of their new or host country, or, go to Nursing School, because nurses are in very high demand everywhere, and with reasonable pay.
Here in the USA, most nurses are on the six figure salary range yearly.

At this point, ditching the profession for something else especially over there may not be a terrible idea after all. However, we ask ourselves, why put I so much time, resources to study a course only to ditch it later. Sad reality!

You will go for court case and client will be pricing you N15k,mbanu it’s not worth it seriously. Even in the civil servant sector,you expect people to work on Saturday and extra hours out of their work schedule and you won’t pay them the allowance in it. So he doesn’t know how much is wig and gown😂😂😂😂

I really praise you for your courage, the video should be made available to all career counsellors in Nigeria. Law is a bad investment as a career now in Nigeria, far too many lawyers have been produced for an environment where people have low economic power to litigate and with barely existent legal aid. About 4,000 lawyers are called to bar every year. I am fortunate to have changed "course" but i feel bad when i see many of these guys suffering. It's also not easy for them to switch considering the pedestal the society has placed them.

When I was in law school students from the north were paid huge sums by their states and when I was in nysc camp one of my colleagues from the north was appointed a magistrate right there in the camp with police orderly, car and driver plus nice salary and a house. This should encourage you in your studies

It's well my sister. With the lot of law students in various institutions, i really wonder what their fate is. You have to do another video, and advise on what you think the upcoming lawyers should do to not get or feel "wasted". I believe that going through the years of studying law gives you a hedge over those that didn't. I'm so sure that no one may have been able to talk you out of studying law possibly because of passion or your big dream.

Warm hugs counsel😂😂😂😂. That being said sufferhead in law practice is because most people want to do litigation. For new wigs look for other areas like tech ,finance,influencer contracts,Human resources etc Your being a lawyer gives you an edge
Very true, thing is the Training and orientation most students and lawyers get is all litigation. There are not many examples and guides to expose new lawyers to these new areas of law. I believe this would change in the coming years

Nigerians create their own hardships, when you have a country where people do not want to pay to maintain roads, hospitals, schools and court systems - then this is the result.
The 1% will always have money and take care of themsleves in their heavily guarded compounds and the rest will brain drain Nigeria and leave for other pastures to make a living,
On the flip side Law is a transferrable skill. I have seen Nigerian lawyers make it here in the UK. Agreed the new QLTS exams are expensive, but with the right mentoring and direction from a UK based Nigerian there are jobs for lawyers, you just need to get your foot through the door,.

My dear, everything you've said is 100% true. However, I am glad that I pursued my passion to become a lawyer and I practiced for 9 years before I left Nigeria. Being a lawyer gave me the opportunity to travel to the US and I never looked back.
To be honest, how many professions in Nigeria are financially rewarding? I was even earning more than some doctors I know who were working in private hospitals in Lagos. Nobody knows for certain what career would be in demand abroad in the next 5 years.
Nigerian Nurses and doctors now have the opportunity to get jobs abroad but it was not always like this and may change at any time. Do you know that it's easier for a Nigerian lawyer to get licensed in the US than for a doctor to do the same? Those of us who have the opportunity to move abroad are lucky because no profession guarantees financial success in Nigeria

I am indeed perturbed by this narration. I want to humbly say here that you must not take everything said in this video "hook Line and sinker."
The first thing I want you to know is that the Legal profession is a noble profession.
Secondly, the legal profession is not for lazy person.
Thirdly, the legal profession is one of the rare profession where you have ample opportunity to delve into many branches.
Also, the Legal profession is one profession that you can call the shots when you bargain with a client.
Every lawyer should know his worth.
I am a Lawyer. I have been in practice for just few years(9yrs) and I am proud to stand tall even among my contemporaries.
The issue of poor salary is not only Peculiar to Legal profession. Some Doctors earn poor salaries as well. Some Bankers/accountants equally earn poor salaries too and getting engaged in a Job is even difficult just like in legal profession.
In law practice, you have varieties of field you can move to. As a new wig, you can start with 'Tenancy matter,' you can add 'Bail at court and Police station.' You can gradually progress into 'Property Sale and Buying for Clients.' Property business in law is one of the most viable or lucrative part of law. You can make Millions in one Sale.
My dear, don't let anyone downplay your interest in Legal profession. You just have to create a name for yourself. At the end, you will be overloaded with clients to the extent that you have to choose what Job you want to do. Within my few years of practice, I am on my third car. I have my house by the grace of God. Go and witness what young Lawyers are achieving in their practice; you will be amazed.
Although just like every profession, it not all ROSSY, because Rome was not built in a day, but with Determination, dedication, passion, strong drive, "people that know you will introduce you to people to know you."
Don't be discouraged. Remember, in Law school they say," The sky is not your limit." It means, you can go on and on and on.

You can easily get law jobs abroad only if you study Law in that country. Unlike Nigeria lawyers abroad specialize so it's way broader than Nigeria law
