But when the director of a crime documentary invites her to tell her side of the shocking incident that took place when she was a teenager at the prestigious Brentley School, Ani is forced to confront a dark truth that threatens to unravel her meticulously crafted life. One key aspect that really impressed me in this movie was how Ani's relationship with her body changed. She lost a significant amount of weight, and had a breast reduction. I love how the film dropped hints about her potential ED triggered after this incident like her never eating lunch, or paying 1.5k a month to exercise, or staying away from carbs. Also her mother commenting on her "developing early", thus requiring more protection. It's a common misconception that eating disorders are only triggered by the desire to lose weight. In this case, it seems like Ani (or Tiffany, back then) believed that her curvaceous figure was partially to blame for all the attention she got from boys, and the rape itself. So by her completely reinventing her body and becoming thin, she was trying to protect herself from that happening again. Very interesting. Kudos to the directors.

      Yeah. ED is the symptom. Root cause was the trauma from the rape (or any form of body and/or mind violation). I’m hoping mental health professionals can keep putting the links together rather than treating symptoms alone. People deserve true healing and post traumatic growth… not just managing symptoms.

    About 3 weeks ago I was raped by coworker and his friend, a former cop and nurse, both people I thought I could trust and feel safe around. This film broke me down and helped me to stop minimizing the incident and to see it for what it is. This helped me gain the courage to stand up for myself and begin to process the horror, pain, shame, and trauma that has been inflicted upon me. I am very thankful that I stumbled upon this movie.

      Yes, especially the mother! The whole world can fail that girl that was raped but she can stand straight if her mom completely accepts her, hear her, and emotionally support her.
      Problem is that women who are now moms don’t even have the tools to help and are consumed by fear of societal judgment… and therefore joined the victim blaming rape culture to blame the innocents. Movie like this shines the light on how we want to be… she’s lucky she has a female friend throughout that’s supportive. She’s lucky to have a boss that encourages her.

      I've been raped twice in my life by men I trusted. There is a far greater wound that any woman can endure. That is parental alienation caused by a narcissistic ex husband who totally ruined our only child by trash talking me and making her feel like she had to choose between him and me. His 2nd wife got in on that game. Now she's 45 yo and has become a narcissist and an alcoholic like her dad. She continually betrays my trust. THIS IS THE DEEPEST WOUND THAT ONE CAN EVER ENDURE. It happens far more often than you'd guess and is becoming more of a trend. Be careful that you don't marry someone who you truly can never trust. I'd like to see a movie based upon this kind of betrayal. I am glad that this was addressed as the numbers of sexual assault are far higher than you'd guess. Many do not get reported (I didn't) cuz the victim gets re-victimized by the police and legal system. Reaching out to a women's organization for help is the best idea and getting some therapy helps as well. Group therapy is better as you are with other victimized women and you hear up close and personal that you are not alone. I did that the second time and healed more quickly.

    Women feel so many things over the years because of what boys and men do.

      Hi all… I keep coming back to this and I don’t know why. love the encouraging comments here. But please note that it’s totally ok to have the moment (sometimes multiple iterations) to sit, cry and grieve. The courage to slow down, sit, cry, grieve and know it’s NOT your fault is crucial for healing … part of staying strong is about having the courage to face it, holding your hurt part with compassion and non judgment, friend. There’s also no shame to talk to someone professional or people who are supportive. Healing takes place easier in safe communal settings. Please visualize me sitting next to you and holding space and understanding for you when you’ve that moment you need to cry, to grieve.

    I watched this movie mainly because I love Mila Kunis. The biggest shock to me was of course the scene of Ani being under the influence and her being raped. • @Kmcheuk
      @Kmcheuk Рік тому +14

      And… as a man… you can also do more. Next time a man says she deserves it because she was drunk, challenge that narrative. Next time a man objectifies a woman, challenge it. Bond with a group of men you feel the same way and form a group to challenge rape culture. We all have a part to support the victims and create a world where it’s culturally not acceptable to rape in any circumstance.

    this movie was astonishing. it potrays the two sides of the society when they react to a rape victim very accurately. on one hand, there are people like ani's mom who react like it's such a shameful thing and put more blame on the victim than the offenders. they only care about what others would think and fail to empathize and understand the severe trauma that the victim may have went through. on the other hand, arthur, who at first seemed like the "good" person until he was not.. makes us realize that just wanting to aggressively protest against the offenders and chase after private revenge isn't the solution to the problem either. the shooting only led to further trauma in ani's life. actually says a lot about how we need a more nuanced approach where not only are we able to help such victims legally and peacefully, ensuring we dont trample upon the residual peace and order in the victim's life, but also seek to provide justice by punishing the offenders appropriately.
