as soon as activated charcoal is combined with multiple ingredients in a product it is already a telltale signs that it is not going to do much since the charcoal will absorb the other ingredients especially an active ingredient. If this happens, then the charcoal would be deactivated before it is even applied on the designated area eg. skin.
Nice episode, although I was expecting the question : "If there are no conclusive studies either way, does that mean we can't definitively say that it does NOT work either?" - because really, if it is so popular, I'd expect more research interest to settle the score one side or the other. After all, marketing can only work either if there are clear benefits or ambiguity surrounding it. You can't market lead in your cosmetics as a positive, for example. To get more clarity into this, my recommendation for next Talking Point would be to look into existing research and, if possible by any chance, meet one of the main researchers involved to find out the reason of inconclusiveness and challenges encountered. Or perhaps, this topic of inconclusive research on popular products can itself be made into a Talking Point episode (if the situation is more or less the same for other ingredients / elements as well) and then provide a reference conclusion for future entries. I hope this suggestion is taken into account.
I stopped using any toothpaste when I had gum and sensitivity problems in my mouth 3 years ago. Since then, I just regularly brush my teeth with two types of brush: medium hard and soft. I also regularly brush my tongue. Somehow, No complaints from my partner about bad breath. I do not use any teeth products because my mouth is so sensitive to them. I doubled my routine to three times a day brushing my teeth.
Maybe Steve can try using pure activated charcoal (powder) on one side of his face, and none on the other. For about maybe 3 months. Then we will be able to see if it has any effects :D
Just a thought - for the taste comparison, it will be better if the participants do not discuss about their opinion as one person's opinion may influence the rest.
While the results were inconclusive, it's good enough to help stop anyone who is gullible enough to buy into marketing. I always found it laughable that the skincare companies think we buy the gimmick since chemicals actually work faster than physical ingredients unless you are just scrubbing your skin away. The one thing this video doesn't address is actually eating activated charcoal by itself and whether it actually works for diarrhea, gut health etc. I assume since the trend faded away about 2 years ago that it doesn't really work, but some auntie doesn't know that.
I am still quite skeptical on this research. I feel it is not deep enough. You have to go to the microscopic level to test . Not that I am a big fan of charcoal products, though.
People have the herd mentality. They will fall for any hype and garbage that is carefully packaged and presented as God’s truth. At the bottom of all of this is make money at any cost.
Steve makes better content than content creators lol

Agreed: I would never use it for my teeth. It'll suck out minerals like calcium and make them weaker.
Another informative episode! Thanks for the great content, hope the show continues on for a long time 👍
Another good production! The presenter is very engaging and glues us to continue watching. Great job there
Love this informative episode - and as always, Steve’s interesting experiments 😊
