im about to do mine as my shocks need re painting. i put them on 15 years ago so im expecting a real fight with those lower bolts. couple of things worth noting. if you undo both top mounts at the same time you can swing the subframe down (making access to bolts and removal of shock a lot easier. also go for either vr6 mk3 or g60 top mounts. they are way better. good video tho. helps remind me visually how it comes apart. i laughed when your spanner was too fat for both nuts. sums up repairing mk2's
Yeah I went for mk3 mounts on mine (I think…) Leant having both off let’s you swing it down (when reattaching haha) Thanks for the comment, good luck with yours!
@@MK2GolfStories all good bro! Your videos have helped me a lot. I was gifted an 89 Jetta 1.6TD last year. Only 205k kms on it. Needs some TLC but I’m getting there!
Hey mate do you have any idea what those big brass washers are for in between the nuts? Mine don't seem to go down as deep as yours so they're just basically hanging in the air between 2 nuts, seem kind of pointless to me...
Hiya mate , Sounds like your rear mounts are shagged , there is a small thin washer on top of the mount then the brass plates and a bigger washer on top of that. i THINK The brass plat is to stop the top of the suspension arm being pulled down through the mount... could be wrong though, im no expert. I'd deffo try replacing the mount sthough nate, or maybe theyre on upside down...
@@MK2GolfStories hmm my mounts and suspension are brand new, can't imagine them being bad and I'm about 90% sure I installed them correctly too haha. Last time I looked at it was a few weeks ago so maybe the brass thing isn't as high up as I seem to remember. I'll check it out soon. Thanks anyway!
@@MK2GolfStories false alarm! Turns out it doesn't look very different for me except that I only have one nut on top of the brass washer instead of 2... no idea why in my head it looked so different haha. Thanks for the replies though, now at least I know what the washer is for! I've always wondered it but it makes a lot of sense that it's a kind of safeguard for the top mount
My mk.II has a weird sort of metallic rattling and creaking noise from the front left suspension. How do I problem solve a suspension? What do you reckon I should check?
See if it’s when you turn the wheel one way or the other, or if it does if while stationary, press down on the front wing and see if you still have it, jack the car up take the wheel off and give the arm a wiggle. It COULD be the top mount, that will be more of a clunk / maybe a squeak. Beyond that I can’t really advise mate
@@MK2GolfStories I assume it's just the fact that they're old. Doesn't seem to be anything else wrong with the suspension. Gonna have them replaced when I save up enough money
@@brankodordevic7106 I had a rattle and creak from the back and since replacing the suspension and top mounts it’s totally stopped (was then top mount )
You've put the nuts back on the top of the shocker in the wrong order mate. If you watch your video back, you take off the top single nut, then the collar, then two nuts. When you've reassembled, you've put the single nut on first, then the collar, then two nuts. It should be: two nuts, then the collar, then a single nut.
@@garryjohnson641 Yeah man, back in august. Was totally gutted, had put so much in to this car, got a new one which is a bit of a lemon now but hey, onwards and upwards
