@@firenze6478 For me it's Fungal Wastes because theres a bench in Mantis Village, but you have to kill about 6 Mantises before it and i keep dying to the Mantises. Every time I die I go back to the Queen's Station at the bottom left of the area. Then I need to go all the way back. Personally, I thought that the Fungal Wastes were shit.
Looks like the City of Tears is a popular pick. And I have to agree, it's my favorite area as well. I was more drawn in by the music, atmosphere and the visual design more than anything. Exploring it was fun and I thought the enemies were great. But whenever I would backtrack through this area I wouldn't do my usual dash spam that I do everywhere else, and just soak in the beautiful music and atmosphere. Hearing the music of that area gives me an almost nostalgic feel nowadays, even though I played the game in 2017.
I too really like the white palace. Most people don't unterstand this but the game outside of white place hasn't really that much platforming. This is my one problem with the game. It doesn't have enough areas like the white place to really test your platforming skills. I hope silksong has more areas like the white palace.
Personally I love deepnest, with greenpath as a close second. I love spiders and creepy areas. I just wish it had a real soundtrack to it. The discordant violin track is really cool and adds atmosphere, but I feel like deepnest would have been even better with real music. And, the hot spring in it is probably one of my favorite areas in the game.
Colosseum of fools deserves to be way higher on the list imo. It gives some great practice for combat of all types, has a really fun atmosphere, is super satisfying to beat each trial, and has the least annoying walkback in the game.
one of my favorite ever moments in hollow knight was after i had already entered kindoms edge from the tram, i had seen all the bodies falling from the sky the whole trip up and wondering what was going on. I was coming up to the colosseum from the left side with headphones on and slowly hearing the cheers and chants and swords clanking get louder and louder until i finally got there and was completely surrounded by it. such a cool moment honestly it gave me chills. such a fun exciting atmosphere, even when you die you wake up on the bench under the area and hear the muffled screams from above, sosososo cool. but honestly i think it wouldve been better if he counted it as part of kindoms edge.
I remember grinding for coins and had about 10,000 coins, died in the crystal area and could not get to my soul in time. I made it all back, luckily. Then I lost all those coins in the crystal area LMAO
Deepnest is my favorite area due to my sheer pride when i got out. I went into deepnest DEEP way early right after mantis lords, getting all the way to the tram and going around in it. I had to fight my way out while still not being good at the game, dying repeatedly, getting lost, and getting sent back to my bench. As I finally made my way out after an hour and a half of being stuck, seeing the Mantis Lords bow to me as I exited made me feel like a true champion, and was a funny way of becoming one of my top 5 moments playing games.
I love white palace, it's aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable as long as you know what you're getting into, and it gives an opportunity for different charms to shine

my brightness was way low on my first time in the abyss. I was about 1/3 of the way up in the flashback and then I fell down because I could't see anything. it was a lot better after I figured out I could turn up my brightness on the tv.
I think forgotten crossroads should be in at least the top 8 Edit: Deepnest is also way too big and suffers from not having a proper boss in beasts den
I have to agree to that first part. The atmosphere in forgotten Crossroads is amazing and the feeling of first exploring this area makes you think what could‘ve happened to this civilisation. There are people that might say that the gray colour and the enemies are also present in some other areas, but this area didn‘t feel that way because it was the first area that did this. You meet many characters like the last stag and the snail shaman there and the Wayne this kingdom is established is awesome. It‘s name fits perfectly as it connects to so many areas and gives you hints for future areas to explore. It‘s after City of tears and dirtmouth probably the area you come back to most and as it changes after a certain Progress in the game it doesn‘t get boring. I think it’s a great first area!
@@kheranzu2000 Yeah, I feel like a way that they could've fixed the problems is by having more interesting landmarks to further tell the story since alot of the interesting things about it are along the edges and traversing it can get boring later in the game but if anything that shows how good it is if you can still enjoy it so late into the game.
I love the white palace because good platforming where you need to time it tit just feels so satisfying ( I even started a second save to play it again)
I love the City Of Tears but also really love the Queen’s Gardens. Sure it’s Greenpath 2.0, but the music gives a sense of wonder and the greenery feels so much more..... alive rather than Greenpath’s. Also the Traitor Lord fight seems so important and sad, especially with Cloth. But what really seals the deal is the White Lady. Everything about her in her house, surrounded by greenery and the corpse of a dedicated warrior makes it so unique and special. The music in her house is good too. Sometimes I just ride to the Queens Gardens on the Stag just to listen to the music. Wonderful, would tie it with City Of Tears for favorite area in Hallownest.
if you hate deepnest then its doing its job. its the spider area with ambience of crawling and corpses coming back to life as giant spiders. its meant to be creepy
8:14 explains all the reasons I hate deepnest Creepy Getting lost Dense SPIDERS Getting lost Lack of good boss MORE SPIDERS Still looking for the way out Screw you Devouts Ah here’s the stag station Falling off of distant village
I can’t help but feel like the people who bitch about Infected Crossroads get the nail arts, use them once on some weak enemy that they can already one shot, go “That’s cool I guess” and then completely forget about them
I was surprised about its placement as well. It's meant to turn the tutorial area into a more difficult area that is more in line with the rest of the game after all.
My favorite area is deepnest. It just feels so dark, claustrophobiac and the sounddesign made me shiver in my first playthrough. All the surprises in this twisted, beast-filled area (I did it before I got to the City of Tears, because I noticed the Mantis Lords early on and had way too much fun challenging them). It was such a new, cool place. I felt so trapped and stumbled hours in the darkness before I got back to Dirtmouth. This was truly the best in my eyes.
I did a weird in-between. I did beat the mantis ladies early, but then I walked a few rooms into Deepnest and thought I should probably have the lumafly lantern before I go there.
I heard someone say this before, but broken vessel actually trains you for The Hollow Knight. The attacks are similar, so it's like it's teaching you to get used to it faster. It's one of my favorite bosses.
I felt the crystal peak should have been higher up. I absolutely love the bright colors of the area, as well as being more platforming focused, which I really enjoyed. The enemies could be annoying but had some interesting counter-play. Plus hallownests crown is a pretty cool spot
@davie _boi nosk doesn’t really embody the word spider tho, like I want a sick spider boss battle not, oh a guy runs form one side of the screen to the other
After going through gloomy crossroads, a calm grassy path, and then some place with mushroom people, but then hearing the singing of marissa, while the rain falls from the blue lake onto where I just entered, my favorite memory from a game.
I’m so glad city of tiers was first. That area is so great. I recently came to it in my second play through and was astonished by the scale of the area and how little I knew. On my main profile I loved dashing around the city and seeing every little detail it has, but coming to it for the first time, even when I already know most things about it, felt massive and new.
Fog canyon was kind of weird because it was really short, and the map was difficult to get. You need Isma’s Tear if you access the room from the right, or Shade Gate if you access the room from the left, and you don’t have either of those abilities the first time you arrive...
City of tears just has a nice setting and ambience which is adored by the community. Compared to other areas in terms of content, COT definitely has the most unique stuff, (nailsmith, memorial, lemm, lurien, "someone" in pleasure house, the collector, shade cloak)
Unpopular opinion: deepnest is my favorite area because of the spiders, atmosphere, level design, and hornet lore. And I actually love nosk and his fight. He's such a cool character.
I think Deepnest's atmosphere is designed incredibly well with the visuals and sounds, but for me it's held back by being one of the largest areas in the game while also having some of the least amount of content alongside the fact that it's very annoying to travel through, especially at the point when the player is first able to access it. The constant floors crumbling into spikes, Dirtcarvers, Stalking Devouts, big pitfalls, and spike pits shrouded in darkness make for an area that is annoying at best to traverse.
Chicken Nugget yeah it’s annoying yo traverse but did you really just said deepnest has some of the least amount of content? There are a lot of things in deepnest(boss, dream warrior, whispering root, tram pass, dreamer, mask shard, soul vessel?[can’t remember])
My top 3 is 1.White Palace; 2.Queen's Garden; 3.Crystal Peak. I love plataforming, it's my favorite aspect of the game. The Path of Pain was the most fun I had playing it.
i was kinda triggered at the beginning of the video (i LOVE the atmosphere of the resting grounds) but by the end when you listed the really amazing ones like white palace and city of tears i realized they're all good and some had to be listed lower than others. although i would put greenpath and fungal wastes much lower on the list. i like them but not as much as others do. but maybe it's cause i played through them way too many times in my steel soul attempts :P
I love how people are extremely analytical about the game design in Hollow Knight when I could barely end my first playthrough without ending up with a smashed mouth given how much I fucking loved everything. I guess that it's a second playthrough that makes you actually analyze it.
Can't lie, Royal waterways is pretty sick. Not top tier mind you, but everything from the enemies and the bosses, to the music, atmosphere and map design all evoke this oppressive feeling that I'm weaving myself through a sad, sad maze of rejects forced and destined to be forgotten underneath a great city. Flukemarm is dog shit tho lmao
Here’s my ranking of the areas in HK Howling Cliffs Royal Waterways Resting Grounds Fog Canyon Greenpath The Hive Forgotten Crossroads Ancient Basin Queens Gardens Fungal Wastes Crystal Peak Kingdoms Edge City of Tears Deepnest
I honestly love fog canyon and royal waterways. I like both of their water aesthetics. I also like the way fog canyon remains mysterious, you go through it many times before actually being able to get to the part of it where the map is. Then once the dreamer section of the game begins you go back and there are a bunch of cool lore things going on.
Royal Waterways is my favorite area, I always come back to fight the Flukes because they are so fun. I also love the sewer theme, and the balloon pufferfish things are fun too, as well as the dung defender (my favorite boss). Flukemarm was pretty easy, but I got Flukenest, which when paired with Shaman stone can destroy bosses. The pilflips are a cool concept, and the Belfly spam is funny. I just love the area in general, it's so simple, yet fun.
i like the theme and idea of the hive i just wish it interconnected with other places because it feels more like an out and back mission to beat the boss grab the charm save 1 wormy dude and grab the mask shard on the way out and never return. other places had unreachable areas or tram stations or something that made you come back so it wasnt a 1 and done but the hive is simply a 1 and done and never return.
True. It made sense for, say, queen's gardens or white palace, since they are late-game areas for another ending, but the hive is just this tiny, optionnal and easy area.
I think resting grounds might be my personal favorite. There’s not much there but it has a lot of story elements. It’s where we meet the moth tribe who is responsible for the radiance being forgotten and therefore the infection spread. Also the delicate flower quest is here which, after I beat it, I realized jt was one of the best side quests I’d ever done. Plus the dream graveyard is there and listening to the npcs is always good if you haven’t dreamnailed theM
My personal favs are City of tears, Queen's gardens, Deepnest and Royal waterways. City of tears bc of the lore, the music, and Marissa. I just loved exploring the right half of the city with Grimmchild. Queen's gardens bc of how beautiful it is and for the lore too. Deepnest and Royal waterways bc they make me feel like I was playing a horror game, I just loved de ambience and how lost they make me feel, especially Deepnest. Others that I really like are Fungal wastes and The abyss.
City of tears is my favorite area too! Ever since I first got to that point in the game I've always found it captivating and I still listen to the music randomly sometimes to calm me down. Definitely not a huge fan of royal waterways though, I just remember the first time I unlocked it and went in and I was just like what the fuck is this.
I've heard so much to the contrary but... I don't think Hollow Knight's platforming is bad. The way you can chain everything together after a downstrike pogo or walljump gives a really fun rhythm to it. I like Hollow Knight's platforming more than Celeste's even and that an actual 100% platformer.
imagine if all the areas other than white palace, greenpath and city of tears were replaced with fusions of those areas. pale city, palace gardens, and path of tears
Honestly was surprised at Infected Crossroads being so low. Maybe it's just time spent grinding Geo, but I've grown to love it much more than the blander Forgotten Crossroads. The explosions really are not that annoying if you're able to just walk away from a corpse, or jump away from the husks. There's also the lore implications of it which I love. Definitely would've put it above the less infected counterpart.
Greenpath will forever be my favourite area in the game and probably in any game. I was so relaxed playing it my first time just because I was captivated by the scenery. I got the game just to experience that sort of environment and I wasn't disappointed at all
Greenpath is my favorite. It's got a tangled, overgrown feel to it that makes the caverns so much more alive than in the basically dead Forgotten Crossroads. Heck, once I got out of TFC and into Greenpath I was blown away by how colorful it was. Compared to the dark, dreary feel of King's Pass, Dirtmouth, and The Forgotten Crossroads, Greenpath is a complete reversal of aesthetic. Suddenly, the dark caverns filled with slow-moving and depressed husks are replaced with twisting tunnels of green mossy leaves filled with surprises and traps like Squits, Fool Eaters, Moss Chargers, and the occasional Moss Knight (those things were a huge challenge to me when I first started the game, and the room with two of them fighting me at once was pain incarnate) to keep you focused on the game while still being able to enjoy the amazing scenery. The soundtrack is also great, a light and airy tune that perfectly suits the liveliness of the area. Two characters that you'll see a whole lot of-Zote and Hornet-are introduced here. The bosses are also great, featuring the infamous weaklings Vengefly King and Massive Moss Charger to contrast with the fairly challenging Hornet and No Eyes. It's also great for the abilities you unlock-Mothwing Cloak completely changes the game and allows you to access so much more, whereas Great Slash is one of the most useful combat/damage tools in the game (given to you by arguably the best Nailmaster). The charms you get in Greenpath are also great-Thorns Of Agony is the perfect charm for players who are aggressive and get hit a lot, whereas Shape Of Unn has saved my life countless times and is an extremely unique ability. But perhaps the most important thing about Greenpath is how it clears the way for the rest of the game. Fog Canyon, Forgotten Crossroads, and Queen's Gardens are all accessible directly from Greenpath, making it the point where the game really starts to open up. I love Greenpath for what it is-a beautiful, colorful area that clears the way for the rest of the game and makes you love Hollow Knight so much more. Plus Unn > all other higher beings
No, Fungal waste was the point where the game opens up. After you get mothwing cloak, the only new areas you access are fog canyon and fungal waste. After you get the mantis claw, you can go everywhere besides Queen's gardens.
I've always loved city of tears, I can wander around and around there for hours just listening to the beautiful music there, and I also like the part of city of tears, soul sanctum, really I have no really idea why but thats probably because when before I started to play hollow knight, I used to watch when my sister played it and the first thing I absolutely loved was when she was in soul sanctum, there did my interest into the actual game tho came from, I've always loved Greenpath because of, literally everything there, the music and the textures there. And I'm not that big fan of deepnest , I have not really afraid for those spiders, I just hate those dirt carvers there and FUCK THOSE FLYING ONES WHO SPITS OUT THEM ARGH!! HATE IT!!
Anyone else feels that The Abyss seems more creepy that most people feel like it is? I mean yeah, Deepnest is pretty scary, with an incredibly spooky atmosphere and the creepy sounds that constantly makes you feel like you're getting jumpscared. The Abyss doesn't have music, and there is only just a bit of atmosphere sound, but I felt that what you hear the most is your character walking, which makes it feel a lot denser to me and empty in a good way, plus it's also very dark, which really adds another atmospheric look, and the feeling when you first see all the failed vessel masks on the ground just speaks by itself
Dude, the delicate flower quest was so good and fun once you realise you can pick a path, kill all the enemies, and hardly any will respawn as long as you don't rest on a bench
Honestly I dont really have much of an opinion on any of the areas...except for crystal peaks. Everywhere else just gets stale quick, especially fungal wastes, always running through it. What really makes crystal peaks great for me is those really pretty moments when you use the crystal heart and see those colossal, crystal packed caverns. Really pretty moment.

Every time I die I go back to the Queen's Station at the bottom left of the area. Then I need to go all the way back. Personally, I thought that the Fungal Wastes were shit.
@@ultrahooman5745 Good point, and personnally I'm also not a fan of the colors in this area, the music is also kinda lame.
I hope silksong has more areas like the white palace.
sub to pewds you idiot silksong’s platforming potential is way higher
I’m one of the few people who were disheartened when they learned you couldn’t play path of pain twice. Really wish you could.
@@bagelboop3517 yeah why cant you play it more than once?
@@offrow Cause I guess Team Cherry didn't wanna let players suffer through hoping the nail jump will just fucking work already twice in a row
Oh no
Personally I love deepnest, with greenpath as a close second.
I prefer the colosseum to Godhome. Godhome is just an excuse to throw every boss at you, it doesn't really make sense.
one of my favorite ever moments in hollow knight was after i had already entered kindoms edge from the tram, i had seen all the bodies falling from the sky the whole trip up and wondering what was going on.
@@legrandliseurtri7495 there is godhome lore at least
Ah yes, another silksong hype builder
It will come out one day
...any day now. Bet it will be worth it
I remember grinding for coins and had about 10,000 coins, died in the crystal area and could not get to my soul in time. I made it all back, luckily. Then I lost all those coins in the crystal area LMAO
Why didn’t you use jiji
There's no timer. Your Shade will stay there forever until you die again.
“There is one good boss and one shit boss” yeah I guess there is
I love white palace, it's aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable as long as you know what you're getting into, and it gives an opportunity for different charms to shine
by the way, soul sanctum is also a separate area with unique bosses, artwork / theme, music and boss
Best thing about the Ancient Basin was when you realize that the monarch wings were causing the wind
My favorite area has to be the City of Tears and the Queen's Gardens because of the music and the ambience.
I thought I was the only one who hated royal waterways lol.

I love that Ancient Basin has no music at all, and the dark organic ridged look reminds me of HR Giger's art.
Such a great video! Loved to see what the community thinks about the different areas and your own personal opinion. My personal favorite has to be Greenpath tho
City of tears is like the best parts of firelink and anor londo mashed together
But not as good as either
Areas are what shows on the map, it makes no sense to argue the colosseum isn't in Kingdoms Edge, it literally is.
my brightness was way low on my first time in the abyss. I was about 1/3 of the way up in the flashback and then I fell down because I could't see anything. it was a lot better after I figured out I could turn up my brightness on the tv.
I think forgotten crossroads should be in at least the top 8
Edit: Deepnest is also way too big and suffers from not having a proper boss in beasts den
I agree with the first parts, this place have a place in ours heart. Also I agree with your edit Deep Nest *SUCKS*
I love the white palace because good platforming where you need to time it tit just feels so satisfying ( I even started a second save to play it again)
I'm so glad that City of Tears is #1 it makes me feel so happy and peaceful and aHH--
I love the City Of Tears but also really love the Queen’s Gardens.

Queen gardens platforming
was pretty easy honestly
Ancient basin is the best cause it has my man broken vessel
Ye ame too
Broken vessel isn't an exceptionally difficult boss, but he is just fun to fight
Also the music for that fight is so good
I heard someone say this before, but broken vessel actually trains you for The Hollow Knight.
"sure there's nosk but *Nosk sucks* "
Couldn't agree more
@davie _boi nosk doesn’t really embody the word spider tho, like I want a sick spider boss battle not, oh a guy runs form one side of the screen to the other
After going through gloomy crossroads, a calm grassy path, and then some place with mushroom people, but then hearing the singing of marissa, while the rain falls from the blue lake onto where I just entered, my favorite memory from a game.
YES the colloseum of fools is in kingdoms edge
City of tears just has a nice setting and ambience which is adored by the community. Compared to other areas in terms of content, COT definitely has the most unique stuff, (nailsmith, memorial, lemm, lurien, "someone" in pleasure house, the collector, shade cloak)
Unpopular opinion: deepnest is my favorite area because of the spiders, atmosphere, level design, and hornet lore. And I actually love nosk and his fight. He's such a cool character.
IMO deepnest has the most atmosphere of all the areas. It does a great job of creating a feeling of absolute dread.
Deepnest is my second fave behind City of tears
🔫
People say it's supposed that Crossroads have a isolated feeling, but i think Howling Cliffs has that feeling. I like it.
To each their own. I got lost in Greenpath for hours, and I'm still not sick of the song. Absolutely love that area.
I now hate Royal Waterways too because FlukeMarm ended a Steel Soul of mine.
I actually like infected crossroads it indicates that the infection is getting out of hand. Thus knowing the hollow knight is close to being released
Also, I noticed you put every area with a full screen title card. Thanks for that.
Soul Sanctum in the City of Tears, Stone Sanctuary in Greenpath and the Abyss in the Ancient Basin are such eerie places damn
So happy a large portion realized the greatness of Deepnest no matter how fricked up
Here’s my ranking of the areas in HK
Howling Cliffs
Royal Waterways
Resting Grounds
Fog Canyon
Greenpath
The Hive
Forgotten Crossroads
Ancient Basin
Queens Gardens
Fungal Wastes
Crystal Peak
Kingdoms Edge
City of Tears
Deepnest
Dirtmouth - Firelink Shrine
Forgotten Crossroads - Undead Burg
Greenpath - Darkroot Garden
Deepnest - Blighttown
White Palace - Sen’s Fortress
City of Tears - Anor Londo
The Abyss - The Abyss
I fucking love hollow knight, so hyped for silksong
I've heard so much to the contrary but... I don't think Hollow Knight's platforming is bad.
The way you can chain everything together after a downstrike pogo or walljump gives a really fun rhythm to it.
I like Hollow Knight's platforming more than Celeste's even and that an actual 100% platformer.
I like Hollow knight's platforming a lot too, idk what people have against it.
imagine if all the areas other than white palace, greenpath and city of tears were replaced with fusions of those areas. pale city, palace gardens, and path of tears
"what masochist would put white palace in S tier" is now my favorite thing ever
Honestly was surprised at Infected Crossroads being so low. Maybe it's just time spent grinding Geo, but I've grown to love it much more than the blander Forgotten Crossroads. The explosions really are not that annoying if you're able to just walk away from a corpse, or jump away from the husks. There's also the lore implications of it which I love. Definitely would've put it above the less infected counterpart.
I love how each area do their job really well, despite not being the best sometimes
‘there’s one good boss’ Yes, Flukemarm
City of tears would be my favorite but i despise the watcher knights.
I want fangames of hollow knight with more stuff like path of pain
I actually really like the delicate flower quest, although it is annoying, it's really fun.
Where’d the old ranking go? I know it wasn’t good but for some reason I feel nostalgic for it lmao
I would've put WP on the 1st, sometimes I replay the game just to visit this area again
I wish I was a professional at Primal Aspens
YES MAGICAT IS MAKING A HOLLOW KNIGTH VIDEO AGAIN MY LIFE IS COMPLETE
Honestly I dont really have much of an opinion on any of the areas...except for crystal peaks. Everywhere else just gets stale quick, especially fungal wastes, always running through it. What really makes crystal peaks great for me is those really pretty moments when you use the crystal heart and see those colossal, crystal packed caverns. Really pretty moment.
Dirthmouth is a relaxing area
