I'm not one to leave comments, but I just gotta say... Marty, you're the man! I've taught myself how to play guitar for a couple years now, with the help of your videos.. And I'm where I never imagined being! Rock on
This song is a massive throwback for my family my dad brother and I used to listen to this song on our way to school. I'm so excited to play it for them
who needs a face to face guitar teacher. ive learned so much from you man. thanks alot and please dont stop posting vids. your way of teaching is simple and easy to learn so i say thanks from all the beginner learners out there
Sir, I can not express how much I enjoy learning songs from you.I thank you, and project love and all things positive to you and all that you've come to love.
i bought your blues series lessons , because you are the best !! i have 3 bundles of unopened lessons which i have purchased, and they will continue to gather dust until i work through yours..
Yeah .... I'm just throwin' some brathaly love to my main guitar man Marty. You've literally changed my life and I want you to know how much I appreciate u :)
You are the best Marty, you have taught me so many songs its ridiculous. Now i've recorded my own songs, and have played on several stages all because of your video's which started me.
"A Voltron of barre chord power". Love it! Great video too. I like closing my eyes and pretending Jonah hill is Marty ;) Marty, you're taking me back to the first week of college, August 1995. Many thanks.
Love your videos. I use to do the same trick with barring. I used the same barring tricks until I saw another way that was easier. Just practice pressing them all down at once and do it repeatedly a few times. Then just go and forth between a few chords slowly and just do it every time and it becomes second nature without thinking.
Hey man I just started playing the guitar about 6 months ago and I just wanted to say all your videos are awesome and you have really helped me make things sound okay haha every time I want to learn a new song I search for your vids🙏🏻 Thank you💪🏻
funny thing I was composing a song that I've tinkered with for years and that was always just not quite where I wanted it until I was finger picking the the first three cords of this song and then gave them a strum. it sounded supper familiar to me but couldn't quite put my finger on where I had heard it before. I finally played it for my gf and she says that sounds a lot like live. so I had her play me the song and so of course I had to learn it immediately !! lol can't count how many times I've had this happen over the years. anyway thanks for the vid. I have absolutely no formal training but I like to know what the cords are I'm playing. lol after 25 yrs you would think I would know them by now but my ears have served me well. thanks again for the vid!!!!
Marty you are awesome..Not one to comment, but I got say of all the people putting out how to guitar videos, yours are always the best. Straight forward and easy to follow. And you can tell your having fun doing it. Keep them coming!!
Marty- when I started, your strum pattern details (d d u d etc) really helped me a lot. Now I'm getting better, it would help if you showed them like the beats. (e chord) 1+2+a (next chord) 3+4+a (f# chord) 1+2+3e+4+a ... You are truly awesome- this is not criticism just a suggestion to help us beginners progress. Thanks for all the great videos you took the time to make!
Thanks! I always struggled with bar chords this seems to be the first song where i can do them pretty well!! I learned another way and i could sing to it with out the bar chords but now that i'm learning the more proper way it's hard to sing along but hopefully i'll get there
Marty You Are Awesome. I thouhgt I had no hope in hell in learning ANY songs on guitar but now Thanks to you I can play TONS! Best instructor on youtube by far! Keep up the good work.
Thanks for all the great videos my man! Really great teaching style. BTW, the hardest part of this song for me is playing the muted "scratch" part after every strum. It took me a while and I've been playing for three years.
great lesson mate, very clear and easy to understand,I'm trying to find how to play --- a song called "My Baby" by Ian Moss 6 string ? any suggestions please ?
Great song man...thanks for showing this one. I attached a vid post on here, you taught me how to play it and this is the first song I ever tried with bar chords. I only been playing since Christmas but I watch a LOT of your vids, so thanks again!
You're a super cool dude Marty!! I've been wanting to learn the guitar part of this song for a while, and you are teaching me how to play it! Thanks buddy!!❤
thank you so much for this video...I learned it in one watch and yeah i don't play barchords alot so this will definitely help me out plus videos like this help me think oh he said F or whatever and i can get to the area faster. Don't dumb guitarists down by saying"ok kiddos fourth string second fret.." people need to learn notes its the musicians way of life!
Marty, you're great at this. Everone out there, his pentatonic help vids are great too. i've gotten exponentially better in the 3 1/2 weeks since ive discovered his vids. i can play basket case somewhat, my rythym sucks ass and my strumming is so subpar, but i have hope now!!!!!!!!!!! \m/ rock on marty!!!!!!
Marty,Marty,Marty....please help a brother thats struggling!!! I need help with Tonic's "if you could only see" Nobody has a tutorial on it. Not you, not guitar tricks, not fenderplay....NOBODY!!! LOL, Thanks for all the other lessons, im actually learning the guitar, started playing 1year ago at 59 yo!!
dude just wanna say a quick thanks, as when I'm busking I will get so many requests of a song "I know" but never bothered to learn on guitar as its on that never ending to do list... lol but I seriously just ask if they can wait a sec n I quickly look you up for the chord progression and the important rhythm n with in a min or two I'm playing someone their favourite song, when they are on the way to the next night club, its amazing how many ppl still love real music but just go dance to music at a club with 10000bpm so they can't step out of time lol. thanks dude for the extra bit of cash in my case and also making someone's night by allowing me to play them their song that means something to them
I hear a different version from Live. the chords do in fact "ring out" but are palm muted after ring out. ring out for two beats and mute i suppose. I'd have to analyze it further to identify the beats. strunning with your finger provides more of a duplicate sound a opposed to a pick. set amp for "flange" effect. somebody mentioned clean on a how to video at one point. clean will not sound like the original. I use only neck pickup on my Gretsch. I also do not strum the high E string and attempt to avoid the B string as well (until the second chorus)
@bshick07 this is an easy song, but he didn't say beginner in his title. look for his songs with beginner, he'll explain the chord shapes better in those videos. In this one, he assumes you already know the chords.
Love it Marty! One thing, when I plug that B5 into my RealGuitar app, it recognizes it as an F#sus2, and Google images confirms it. Just FYI, thanks for these great vids!
Marty I have been playing for a year now. If it wasn't for the videos I would have stopped playing after 6 months. I looked around for a while your not the only game in town as they say. I choose to follow you and stay with you because your ego is none existing easy to follow and your easy going. But dude you said in the Franklin's tower video that you was a head... So bring on the dead tunes. For beginners please. Thanks in advance extremely Grateful.
Thanks for your vids, they’re great! But I wanted to ask you why you use an open e? I watched several videos where they perform live and it seems they’re all power chords (or barre chords?).
They are. The tuning is dropped D# making a standard F major barre chord, barring the first fret, the opening E major chord in the song. The B5add9 and F# are two frets up just like he shows in the video. I don't know why he's teaching an open E either since you cannot mute strum either up or down with an open E like in the song. He should instruct tuning the guitar down one half step.
Great vid and you are a great teacher Marty but one minor correction....I'm pretty sure for the bridge it is G#m to Ebm (played with root on 6th fret, 'A' string) vs. the F#maj you call out. Just watched the Unplugged performance and that's what they are playing (although they are playing it tuned down 1/2 step so they are playing Am to Em). All your vids are great though, keep up the good work!
@newbiemage123 Yeah, You have to press hard enough to get the sound to ring out, if this is your first time playing A Barre chord, it will be very hard, keep at it! it gets easier!
...one of the coolest songs in the world.....
I'm not one to leave comments, but I just gotta say... Marty, you're the man! I've taught myself how to play guitar for a couple years now, with the help of your videos.. And I'm where I never imagined being! Rock on
brittshtxo I really appreciate the comment and of course the support!! thanks again!
This song is a massive throwback for my family my dad brother and I used to listen to this song on our way to school. I'm so excited to play it for them

Marty, you're taking me back to the first week of college, August 1995. Many thanks.

i love it when the guitar does the work in a simple song like this!
i bought your blues series lessons , because you are the best !! i have 3 bundles of unopened lessons which i have purchased, and they will continue to gather dust until i work through yours..

You rock! Decided to finally learn the guitar (bucket list) and your lessons are fantastic. Thank you
Another great lesson. I love the way you are able to simply the song structure. I'm looking forward to trying this song out. 🙏
funny thing I was composing a song that I've tinkered with for years and that was always just not quite where I wanted it until I was finger picking the the first three cords of this song and then gave them a strum. it sounded supper familiar to me but couldn't quite put my finger on where I had heard it before. Thanks! Could you please do a lesson on their song
The Beauty Of Grey
This helped me a lot more than the Guitar Chord App !!!! Thank you
Marty- when I started, your strum pattern details (d d u d etc) really helped me a lot. Now I'm getting better, it would help if you showed them like the beats. Thanks for all the great videos you took the time to make!
I think I'v heard this progression in a few songs... I really like it. Thanks!
Thanks! I always struggled with bar chords this seems to be the first song where i can do them pretty well!! I learned another way and i could sing to it with out the bar chords but now that i'm learning the more proper way it's hard to sing along but hopefully i'll get there

Squeezum ok wow, thanks for your answer! I think he teaches it like this for beginners like me who aren’t great at barre chords?
