This game looks fairly interesting, but one there's one thing that I don't understand. Why Mario? From what I've seen in the video, this game has absolutely no connection to anything from the games aside from the fact that Mario and Luigi are playable characters. Not only that, but Riba and all of the ghosts are just normal people. Why not replace Riba with Peach or make all of the ghosts into Boos or dead Toads? I mean, it doesn't really matter at all, but at the same time it just seems like a weird design choice.

If anyone would actually go to the site they would discover that this was originally a game the creator used as an outlet for her emotions. She was dealing with horrible depression at the time and she really loved Mario and this game was never intended for release. She eventually got better with help from loved ones and they encouraged her to finish the game and publicize it. It was never meant to be taken seriously but I personally see it as something unique that emits a beautiful and tragic light. I am happy this game exists... Even though the story is generic and lacks any outstanding qualities the addition of Mario and Luigi as well as the artwork and especially the death scenes are a reflection of the Creator's thoughts and imagination at the time so that is what really makes it unique.

RPG Maker is pretty well known for it's horror games, actually. Yume Nikki, .flow, The Witch's House, Ib; take your pick. Personally, I prefer Yume Nikki. It doesn't have that instant death-bullshit that other horror games have, yet is still amazingly scary.
Ib is my favourite of these, it actually has nice story, unique villains (no spoopy little girls) and the true ending is incredibly heartwarming However, the scariest one is OFF. Not a horror per se, but damn!

I think Mario-Friend9 put mario characters for a better and a more scary aspect of seeing people's favorite characters being I'm this unusual and scary events they wouldn't be in and have more feel on the player, instead or random new character.
I can't help but think.... Why is this even a "Mario" game? Mario literally could be replaced with ANY other character, with a twin brother. And nothing would change. All adding Mario to this does is mess the immersion up, because it's a bit hard to take this dark plot seriously. It just comes off more like an "Ow the Edge" Mario fanfic. Where as with just an original character. They could have even sold this on Steam.... AND by using Mario, they run the risk of Nintendo giving them a C&D. Since Nintendo's been very C&D happy as of late. Erm... sorry for this somewhat long winded comment. I just find this to be.... Well, just a bit weird. There was obviously a lot of work put into this. I just find it odd they used Mario of all franchises to base this on. With little connection to the Mario series as a whole.
It was made for fun, and the story was mostly improved. The creator honestly only kept the game going because her husband was like: oh yeah this is actually pretty good. So the answer to that is: why not Mario?
It also makes sense because even her yt channel is named Marios-Friend9....? I mean if a fan of a game wants to make a game, of course they would kind of go with their favorite characters. Yeah it might not be her real reason, but hey it is a lot better than kids attempting a .exe game of Mario (just like the gumball.exe game).
As someone who has messed around with RPG Maker since the Don Miguel days of 2000, the great thing about the RPG Maker software, especially with newer versions like XP, Ace and MV are the ability to go beyond what the engine does by default. When using the basic structure the program provides, it is limited in many ways. However if you know how to dig into the RGSS (XP, VX, ACE) or Java script (MV) You can actually make games that aren't JRPG style games. I've seen Zelda style games made in RPG Maker. Great games can and have been made in the software, the issue is most of the stuff that comes out is usually from someone who made their first game and decided to deploy it to the world on steam for money (usually), or didn't have the creative skill and know-how to really bend RPG Maker to make something truly unique. This Mario fan-game is an example of an RPG Maker game made by someone with the drive to make something decent, and it shows.

Sooo.... I'm watching in 2019, and they made an arc version of this game. It has more story on wth is going on. Like in the beginning, your find out that Mario has been possessed by Alice. (You'll need to play the game to find out who this Alice person is)
That arc game is the continuation of the "Missing" ending, where Mario and Luigi get out, but Mario is still possessed and kills Luigi. And what's worse, this game is harder than the 1st game, because there are 8 endings in the game, which 2 of them can be acquired in Sane mode, and the other 6 in Insane mode. And 7 of the endings are bad endings. The only good ending is the toughest ending to get, because you have to complete the entire game, WITHOUT SAVING THE GAME AT ALL!

TheTheisson I think it's because a lot of people have an attachment to Mario, being a beloved character we all recognize. It has more of an emotional effect on the player than some new character we've just been introduced to.
They needed a way for their derivative, mediocre RPG maker horror game to stand out among thousands of mediocre RPG maker horror games, so they slapped Mario on in the last minute for the novelty

That freezer death is scary to me though. It's one of my biggest fears that i'll have to go into the walk in freezer at work for something and the door will lock behind me. I blame spongebob personally since it has so many episodes where the main characters get stuck in the krusty krab's freezer.
+Nyanadventurer the second thankfull there are safety features for these doors that prevent such s thing from happening but I still feel uneasy going into them...
they also get stuck in it in "truth or square" and the episode where squidward gets cryogenicly frozen in there and when he gets out it's the future where everything is chrome.

I absolutely loved this game. It was Mario meets Corpse Party, the music was some of the most off-putting (in an awesome way) since Ocarina of Time's Forest Temple music, and there were times I even teared up while playing it. That blasted forest maze, though! Ugh, I never thought I was going to get through that! Thanks for posting a video on this or I'd have never know this gem existed. The creator still updates from time to time, I believe.
That's all well and good... but why does it have to be Mario? The game doesn't seem to do anything with the preestablished Mario characters or locations. They just took Mario and put him in an average RPG horror game. I've read some stellar fanfics (fanfics, NOT Creepypastas) that do a LOT with the world, the characters, and the already creepy things within legit Mario games. And in lieu of that... why this? It just seems like a wasted opportunity to actually do something with the Mario world and twisting it into something darker. We have forests made of giant mushrooms!!! GIANT. MUSHROOMS. That ALONE could give you endless interesting material. But no. spooky mansion it is. It's just really frustrating to see a lot of effort put into something that at the end of the day seems to have no point to be associated with Mario at all. Especially when I've seen it done in story form. Especially when I've seen it down in story form with characterisation, interesting locations, changing what's familiar to actually make it threatening and having good plot progression and interaction between characters. You know... NOT Creepypasta "this is a totally legit game for real I died after this happened to me!!" nonsense. Also Mario seems kinda wimpy in his reactions here. I know he doesn't get that much characterisation, being a mascot he's not allowed to, but wouldn't he be... you know... a little more determined looking to face on this nonsense? I'd think a guy that faces skeletons and ghosts would not be stuttering and cowering so much. Ugh. this comment is overly long. Sorry. I just get frustrated at lost potential. Much more than things which are just bad. Lost potential is SO much worse.

This game is basically "Luigi Mansion with creepy anime characters". I mean, when I saw Luigi walk in and reading about his habilities to see and feel ghosts, I actually chuckled, because it was a nice touch. He's always surrounded by the paranormal, so having him developing those habilities is a nice touch. Mario was the perfect definition of Mary Sue.
Mario also could jump the gap... He's a platforming plumber after all. Luigi also could pull his Poltergust-2000 out at any time. But he doesn't. Mario could also easily overpower anything he ever came across due to his strength and his power of jumping on top of things. But, again, he DOESN'T!

Why not Mario? I mean, how many horror games do you know with Mario in it that are decent? Yeah, none. Discounting Luigis mansion since he isn't in it for long, and while the game is a Halloween kinda game, it's not actually a horror game. To be fair though, when you start thinking about it, some of the stuff in the games are rather on the creepy side, even just ignoring the surrealism of the world Mario is in itself..... That, and having Mario in your game does tend to get more views, not to mention having a creepy twist on a kid friendly character can be quite fun.
This game looks really well made and it's clear that a lot of effort went into making it, but why Mario? There's nothing resembling a Mario game in this aside from Mario and Luigi, they may as well have just used original characters.

Erm... sorry for this somewhat long winded comment. I just find this to be.... Well, just a bit weird. There was obviously a lot of work put into this. I just find it odd they used Mario of all franchises to base this on. With little connection to the Mario series as a whole.
It was made for fun, and the story was mostly improved.
The creator honestly only kept the game going because her husband was like: oh yeah this is actually pretty good.
So the answer to that is: why not Mario?
It also makes sense because even her yt channel is named Marios-Friend9....? I mean if a fan of a game wants to make a game, of course they would kind of go with their favorite characters. Yeah it might not be her real reason, but hey it is a lot better than kids attempting a .exe game of Mario (just like the gumball.exe game).

As someone who has messed around with RPG Maker since the Don Miguel days of 2000, the great thing about the RPG Maker software, especially with newer versions like XP, Ace and MV are the ability to go beyond what the engine does by default. When using the basic structure the program provides, it is limited in many ways. However if you know how to dig into the RGSS (XP, VX, ACE) or Java script (MV) You can actually make games that aren't JRPG style games. I've seen Zelda style games made in RPG Maker. Great games can and have been made in the software, the issue is most of the stuff that comes out is usually from someone who made their first game and decided to deploy it to the world on steam for money (usually), or didn't have the creative skill and know-how to really bend RPG Maker to make something truly unique. This Mario fan-game is an example of an RPG Maker game made by someone with the drive to make something decent, and it shows.

Sooo.... I'm watching in 2019, and they made an arc version of this game. It has more story on wth is going on. Like in the beginning, your find out that Mario has been possessed by Alice. (You'll need to play the game to find out who this Alice person is)
That arc game is the continuation of the "Missing" ending, where Mario and Luigi get out, but Mario is still possessed and kills Luigi.
And what's worse, this game is harder than the 1st game, because there are 8 endings in the game, which 2 of them can be acquired in Sane mode, and the other 6 in Insane mode. And 7 of the endings are bad endings. The only good ending is the toughest ending to get, because you have to complete the entire game, WITHOUT SAVING THE GAME AT ALL!

That freezer death is scary to me though. It's one of my biggest fears that i'll have to go into the walk in freezer at work for something and the door will lock behind me. I blame spongebob personally since it has so many episodes where the main characters get stuck in the krusty krab's freezer.

I absolutely loved this game. It was Mario meets Corpse Party, the music was some of the most off-putting (in an awesome way) since Ocarina of Time's Forest Temple music, and there were times I even teared up while playing it. That blasted forest maze, though! Ugh, I never thought I was going to get through that!
Thanks for posting a video on this or I'd have never know this gem existed. The creator still updates from time to time, I believe.

That's all well and good... but why does it have to be Mario? The game doesn't seem to do anything with the preestablished Mario characters or locations. They just took Mario and put him in an average RPG horror game. I've read some stellar fanfics (fanfics, NOT Creepypastas) that do a LOT with the world, the characters, and the already creepy things within legit Mario games. And in lieu of that... why this? It just seems like a wasted opportunity to actually do something with the Mario world and twisting it into something darker. We have forests made of giant mushrooms!!! GIANT. MUSHROOMS. That ALONE could give you endless interesting material.
But no. spooky mansion it is.
It's just really frustrating to see a lot of effort put into something that at the end of the day seems to have no point to be associated with Mario at all. Especially when I've seen it done in story form. Especially when I've seen it down in story form with characterisation, interesting locations, changing what's familiar to actually make it threatening and having good plot progression and interaction between characters. You know... NOT Creepypasta "this is a totally legit game for real I died after this happened to me!!" nonsense.
Also Mario seems kinda wimpy in his reactions here. I know he doesn't get that much characterisation, being a mascot he's not allowed to, but wouldn't he be... you know... a little more determined looking to face on this nonsense? I'd think a guy that faces skeletons and ghosts would not be stuttering and cowering so much.

This game is basically "Luigi Mansion with creepy anime characters". I mean, when I saw Luigi walk in and reading about his habilities to see and feel ghosts, I actually chuckled, because it was a nice touch. He's always surrounded by the paranormal, so having him developing those habilities is a nice touch. Mario was the perfect definition of Mary Sue.

Yeah, none. Discounting Luigis mansion since he isn't in it for long, and while the game is a Halloween kinda game, it's not actually a horror game.
To be fair though, when you start thinking about it, some of the stuff in the games are rather on the creepy side, even just ignoring the surrealism of the world Mario is in itself..... That, and having Mario in your game does tend to get more views, not to mention having a creepy twist on a kid friendly character can be quite fun.
