    Also a good reminder that the GC will also work with the designer or architect the homeowner has hired.

    So are you saying the General Contractor does all the Project Management for construction projects.

      Oh, I see. For residential projects. I was thinking more about commercial properties, or a facility being constructed for a government office.

      Thanks for the feedback. We have since bought better equipment and have gotten better at editing. I hope you still got what you needed from the content.

    If someone were to want to be a general contractor, where would they start? I have been in construction my entire life, I know and have good relationships with the majority of subs in my area, and have seen projects through from concept to finish. I feel that I have a good handle on things, I just don't know what to do first.

      David Michalec, it may depend on where you're located. Do you need a license to be a GC in your area? You could start by joining your local home Builder's association. They should have resources for you and there will be a ton of connections that can be made. Making connections with designers/architects can really help you as well. Set up meetings with them and find out what they're looking for in a general contractor. I'm sure they would be happy to share what they need with you. I bet not too many contractors would ask them that question.

      I recommend you go work for a reputable general contractor in your area for at least 5 years (or loner). Learn the ropes. Learn the skills required. Make some contacts. You can learn a lot from people who have been in the industry for a long time no matter what trade they are in.

      Anthony G I’m 18 and I want to get my GC as well. If you’re in the US you need at least a 660 credit score, no felonies, I believe 20k in the bank, 4 years experience can be done after test. It also costs money to maintain the license best advice I can give is to work as a foreman to gain the experience and the money. That’s what I plan on doing.

    Do Gc work for companies who make houses or do they get hired by different companies for different projects

    • @Theconsciousbuilder
      @Theconsciousbuilder  6 років тому +1

      A General Contractor will get hired by a client (homeowner or building owner) and they will manage the project from start to finish. They can do commercial projects, custom homes or renovations. For us, we stick to residential renovations and custom homes.

      The Conscious Builder Inc. So let’s say a company Like tool brothers hires me as their Gc is that what you mean

    • @Theconsciousbuilder
      @Theconsciousbuilder  6 років тому

      Sorry, I'm not sure I'm following. It sounds like a company is hiring you as a subcontractor and they are the general contractor.

      The Conscious Builder Inc. Sorry what I am trying say if I were in a situation where I was Gc and managing over a site that builds new houses, do I work for the owner or the company in other words who hires me the company or the owner

    • @Theconsciousbuilder
      @Theconsciousbuilder  6 років тому

      Sorry, I still don't think I'l following your question completely. Who is this company you're talking about? To me this still sounds like your a subcontractor but for a builder instead of a GC. if you're managing a site for a builder, i would guess your title may be Site Manager or something along those lines.

    Do general contractors are the people who build the foundation?

    • @Theconsciousbuilder
      @Theconsciousbuilder  7 років тому +1

      General Contractors manage the whole project so they often hire a subcontractor to do the foundation however in some cases they may do the work themselves. For example, we sometimes will do an ICF (Insulated Concrete Foundation) for a project in which case our team will do the work.

      The Conscious Builder Inc. what’s the determining factor as to whether to use your own guys or sub out the work?
      a piggy back question: i’m a relatively new GC and still am doing some of the hands on/field work and that’s not the direction i want to take my business. what does the transition look like to go from being a craftsman to a full time GC that doesn’t need to touch a hammer anymore and simply just manage multiple projects? i want to take my business there. do you think it’ll be possible for me to make a transition? i’ll also be needing to find good quality subs.
