    More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

      The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.

      This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

      Look up dividend aristocrats. Pick six to ten from that list. Those companies have a track record of 25+ years of paying dividends. Also, its advisable you work with a financial advisor to help set up a well-structured portfolio.

    Retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. If you are planning for retirement Here are some key pointers. Firstly, kick-start your savings early to benefit from compounding. The longer your money has to grow, the better. Secondly, make the most of retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs, especially if your employer offers a matching contribution - it's essentially free money. Thirdly, diversify your investments across different assets to mitigate risk. Think stocks, bonds, and real estate.

    15:35 - No, retirement does not need 'really active funds'. That's the point of index investing. As Warren Buffett says, buy the index through thick and thin and if it's down, try to buy more, and don't try to dance in and out of it (don't try market timing). He also says an index fund, for retirement, makes the most sense practically all the time. So with Vanguard or your discount broker, your bank, wherever, you can buy an S&P 500 index fund or ETF at very low cost and that's it. Expect about 8% a year indefinitely and to double your money about every 10 or 12 years. Not personal advice, but you can Google what I said about Buffett and verify it. There's VOO or if you like US smaller caps, IWM (Russell 2000 index ETF). Japan is probably a good idea to look at as well for consideration, large caps or small caps (ETFs or funds).

    Good for you, way to go! The only caution I would give is about the target date retirement fund. That is too conservative. You are young enough that you should be 100% in equities. VTSAX or VTWAX would give you the growth you need. Then you could dial down into bonds five or so years out from your retirement. Target date funds start you out with 10% bonds you don't need and then add more bonds way too soon and even all the way up to 60% well into your retirement. That is not good. Even the traditional 60/40 retirement portfolio has much less than that. The only good thing about target date retirement funds is that 401(k) plans default to them, causing people to be invested in something when they otherwise might not even know they need to invest in anything. But they are ill-advised for people like you who are interested in your retirement accounts. Either way, though, congratulations, and best wishes for successful investing!

    Unless you have full time W2 employees, as a self employed person you’d be better off rolling your SEP and your Roth IRA into an Individual 401K and a Roth Individual 401k. There are no income limits on Roth contributions with these accounts and you can contribute up to 22,500 in Roth PLUS the same 25% of your income that you can to a SEP into the traditional side as the employer. It is, in effect, a SEP plus a Roth with higher contribution limits. You can do up to $66k per year for both you AND your spouse (!) Your CPA should’ve told you about it, but most of them (including mine) seem to not know about them… Also the vanguard growth fund (VWUSX) is a much better performing fund than any of the ones you own, even adjusting for fees. Look it up… I bought it in April and it’s already up 15%. Essentially a much better allocated version of the s/p.

    I have challenged myself to put away 50% of my monthly income into stock options which is quite easy since I live frugal without debt. I work as an account executive, and make over $20000. $10000 goes into dividends, and the other $10000 covers my my food plus living expenses. I am seeing improvements in my portfolio, dividends look certain, but I have to attribute this to only to guidance of a licensed fund manager James Fletcher Brennan who allocates funds to a plethora of assets. I have to stay disciplined, and remember that I’m in it for the long term. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the great video.

    I think the retirement crisis will get even worse. A lot of people can’t save because of low paying jobs, inflation, and insane rental rates. And now that home ownership is out of reach for middle class Americans, they won’t have a house to retire with either.

      Rising prices have affected my intention of retiring at 62, working part-time, and building my savings. I'm worried about whether individuals who weathered the 2008 financial crisis found it less challenging than my current situation. The stock market's volatility, coupled with a reduced income, is making me anxious about having enough for retirement.

    Can you please explain more on how target date funds work? For example, we buy the target date fund base on our age and when we’re retiring, but what happen when it comes to is finally retiring? Do we sell those stocks at that time to live off of? Or is it like dividends that we live off of? I never understand that part. Thank you so much for what you do.

    • @summerjoy247
      @summerjoy247 Рік тому +1

      No they are mutual funds, so they don’t pay dividends. The target date just determines the investment strategy for the mutual fund which tends to be less aggressive as you get closer to your target retirement date.

      Every suite of target date funds has a specific "glide path" and a terminal "income/maturity" fund (basically, when Target Date 2020 "expired" a few years ago, it merged into the existing "income" fund within the suite or it started mirroring the suite's terminal fund). For retirees, there is a 4% rule where if they withdrawal 4% from their account annually, the earnings should outpace the withdrawals so you will preserve the principal over time (that "rule" is mostly theory, and working with a financial adviser when nearing retirement is strongly encouraged)

    Can I ask why you would invest in a Target Date Fund, S&P, and Total Stock Market? Asking because it seems like you have significant overlap. The Target Date Fund includes all the companies in the S&P and includes the Total Stock Market, along with bonds and international stocks. The S&P companies are included in both your Target Date and Total Stock Market funds. It seems like you could just invest in your Target Date Fund, or opt for a combination of Total International and S&P or Total Stock Market funds

    • @alrocky
      @alrocky 8 місяців тому

      There is no strong rationale for anyone to hold both S&P 500 and Total US Stock Market within the same account. S&P 500 represents ~80% of Total US Stock Market so both almost identical and essentially interchangeable as an investment. TRF 2055 is 54% of Total US Stock Market. Lots of unnecessary overlap likely by someone who mistakenly thinks they're diversified.
      12:36 More accurate to say "expense ratio" is the cost of *_running_* or operating expense of maintaining the fund.
