Wow, I really loved this episode Ted. I’m always blown away by the photographers and their work you expose in your videos like these. It truly is inspiring and gets me excited and motivated.
I'm glad we still have channels like this one where we can listen to a real, experienced artist who understands the photography craft. I'm sick of those young boys, holding their “vintage” or latest cameras and vomiting words, repeating pre-made sentences that they never actually studied but just heard from someone without even understanding. We are on the verge of not having anyone else to learn from or just to talk about this artform that shows life from a special and unique perspective. Thank you!

Just discovered "art of photo" channel,awesome, worked at Polaroid for 38 years, took a bunch of technical photos, technically proficient, artistically "dumb" love this channel . On the road to getting smarter, Long,l long road, never ends. respect your musical BKG, Love your presentations. mostly landscape, live 5 minutes from Lake Ontario, many many water images, silhouettes, mount5ains, waterfalls, etc. will try to watch from the beginning, interesting how we change!!

Wow, thank you Ted. I haven't heard of Gianni Berengo Gardin before and I definitely look him up. These two masters are incredible in bringing photography to the highest level.
Best episode you have had in a long time Ted.... and there have been a lot of great episodes. For me what works here is taking a simple concept (layers), and then keep going a layer deeper.... I am already trying to think of how I would go to the next level in this concept (e.g. times, seasons, weather, movement).
Outside observer here... on your first example of horizontal layering, the more intriguing aspect of that image to me, what draws me into it, is what the car does to those horizontal lines. The rearview mirror is angled. The windshield forces the distant backgrounds down, making them slightly smaller. The roof even plays a part as its seam around lines up with the distant horizons. There is a TON of things that draws my eyes to that image without initially knowing what is doing it. I suspect these things - and others - not being in symmetry with one another is what makes it a great photo.
It's a great example of how sometimes putting something more or less smack dab in the middle is the right composition. If he hadn't broken the normal rule against centering things, it would have been a much weaker composition.

This video was recommended by another UA-cam channel. It is a great insight into understanding what layers can add and how to use them. However my question(s) concerning overall composition is much too detailed (probably too long winded) to ask here. But it seems I can recognize when one of my photos “works” and when others don’t. But I don’t know the why’s even after having artists as well as others with an artistic eye agree with my recognition of a good vs not so good photo. To be honest, this video on layers helped me a lot on that specific area. Thank you.

Yeah, Gestalt referred to this as Figure to ground and it really dictates that all layers of the image are equally important. Galen Rowell wrote about how people will often ignore the setting when taking their pictures and focus solely on the subject.
Hey just a heads up, you might want to apply a high pass filter on your sound. The very low frequencies rumble like crazy when listening on a decent headset. Great video.
Excellent video on composition once again. I recognized the technique, and now I know what it's called! Another master of layering (and someone who I would love to see covered on the show in the style of the artist profiles you did some years ago) is Ray Metzker. Some f his street work, and especially the pictus interreptus series, use layering to really great effect.

This video describes exactly how I see/analyze street photos and how I am trying to improve my own work... wonder though, what are good ways to go from two layers to three or more, esp if you are not in a street scene or if you are in a street scene but there are little to no people to anchor the comp? I know that photography is as you say "subtractive," but I ask in earnest because a lot of great street shots are so layered.... anyways, thanks for this and look forward to more comp vids

I think the image at 10:43 would be improved by cropping out the wind turbine on the right of the composition. Including both creates a dilemma, because they both demand attention, but none demands more than the other. Therefore your attention is split, which is never comfortable.
Nice to have videos that are not "the top ten" of this and that, or the "so and so" technique for beginners. Nice to see you doing some more advanced stuff. You could have easily replaced the two photographers you used, with Lee Friedlander for BW, and the king of layering himself, Alex Webb for color. But I am glad you bring other photographers to the table (pun intended) that many people may not be familiar with.

Stieglitz "the steerage" mixes layering composition, lines composition pretty nicely for an early historical modern photo.
