The jacket worn is NOT a 'Canadian Airborne Regiment' combat uniform. It was part of the Garrison dress for what was CFB Petawawa (now Garrison Petawawa), home of a number of regiments that formed the Special Service Force and the AMF or Ace Mobile Force. I was posted there in the early 80's in 2RCHA. The Lynx is an 'Armoured' reconnaissance vehicle and not an airborne unit kit. It was used by the 8CH (8th Canadian Hussars), RCD (Royal Canadian Dragoons), LSH (Lord Strathcona's Horse) and 12e Regiment Blonde due Canada. It may have supported infantry units, but crewed by armoured troopers. There are a number of other issues (errors) in the video and you guys really need to step it up on the accuracy. Just saying.....

The 8CH before we were posted to Germany had a jump troop in RECCE SQN. We called it 1st Troop PARA. I was with that troop from May 84 until July 87. We never did jump any of our Lynxes, but we did Laps two in Goose Bay in Jan 86 I believe. As far as I know, our troop was the only Lynx troop that was in the Airborne battle group. BTW, we did not wear the maroon beret, we wore our traditional black beret. also Larry is out of dress. He is wearing a maroon beret with red leaf jump wings. They should be white operational wings.
They didn't show the pivots you could do donuts especially in winter to zero turn and bug out the other way if you hit ememy.The pivots were spring loaded they were in front of the tiller bars and wimps had trouble using them as they required a little elbow grease, you engage and give it gas and the left or right track is locked .Donuts on the ice yeaaaaa.These vehicles would have been shit at war but were fun to drive when not on exercise.They were dangerous dusty, wet,leaky and needed tlc but could go anywhere with a good driver.They forgot the 2 bilge pumps and the greasing you had to do before swim and the fact you had a gpmg .30 (7.62 NATO) and the .50cal. and the huge access hatch on top of engine.Mine had a busted gas gauge they never fixed (even though I reported everyday) and made me anxious for three years I always had to keep extra jerrycans because nobody wanted it to go 2nd line and our mechanics could not get into gas tank (which was IN THE VEHICLE).The rad was never fixed even if I wrote it up every day,so the engine blew one day,It went third line.It came back with a new one but we still we had to fix gas gauge but at least we had a new gas tank and could fix it.I got all new torsion bars I put in and new roadwheels and tracks. We would drag race and I had the fastest Lynx on base.(Still slow though, about 40 miles -hour on flat).I can't remember exactly how fast but it felt slow often, you drove these full throttle almost all the time (depending on terrain).

What happened to the 8th Hussars after the 70's & 80's? It's difficult to find full explanations online instead of just lists of dates when units existed, got absorbed or disbanded. They trained my militia regiment at Petawawa in 1971 & 1972. I was the "designated driver" for a Lynx during our several weeks on exercise. i.e. no one else got to take a turn at driver. Fun times.
Charlie I believe the 8Th CDA Hussars were made a reserve unit. I would not be surprised. It was kinda a joke when I was in 86,If you wanted a full Regimental Parade of the 8TH, you would have to empty DB Edmonton.This was because half the unit was up on charges. I guess when the were looking to cut back Armoured Units go for the problem child.
Thanks for the background, though disappointing in some ways. Well, during those exercises they sure know how to run the wheels off the APC's. During a training break I was dozing off laying back on a compound's berm, ignoring all the racket from various armour in the background. Then it got a little louder, then particularly loud and the ground was shaking. I opened up my eyes and there was an M113 headed for me at speed, on about a 45 degree angle. I wondered if he even saw me and I started to roll when the driver must have yanked a track 'locker' lever and showered me with a few hundred pounds of dirt, like a smartass would do with a speed boat headed straight for a dock to soak any people sunning themselves (which I've experienced too). I took it as a good practical joke. BTW, if you play back the vid at 3:00, you'll hear the older fellow explain that he is dressed in a Canadian Airborne Regiment uniform of the period, hence the maroon beret. I was in the Governor General's Horse Guards for my time in.
The 8thCH was rotated to Germany in 1987. The RCD returned from Germany to Petawawa. The Regt returned to Canada and was turned into a reserve unit in 1993 when the bases in Germany were closed.

Not bad video .I could talk 10 hours about it drove it as a sapper in 5 cer (5 combat engineer regiment, 5ieme regiment de genie de combat) 13A, in Valcartier Que. in 80s-90s. Everyone used them in Canada, engineers,armor,infantry,artillery we had about hundreds in Canada. Fun, yet wet and cold and dusty. I hope 13A ,13B still running or at least gate guarding.
I served in CF regs 2 RCR and later reserves from early 80's to early 90's. I was never airborne but worked along side them on many occasions. From my recollection the heaviest vehicle that was dropped was a jeep. All purpose mounted with MMG, HMG or TOW anti-tank Lynx was a brigade asset used by the Hussars. Good work tho guys on the trip down memory lane with the vehicles used by CF back in the day. Do you have a video on the Leopard 1 and Leopard 2? There is also a little known supply vehicle in the M113 family that was used at the company level Plus a command vehicle variant that you can look into.
Now it looks like UK's next recce vehicle will be even bigger than this; but it has got an electronics suite that can individually target the moths in a scotsman's sporran I suppose.
call sign 69B, would have been 6th company, with 9 being a command element, B = possibly the SSM or CSM's vehicle. As I am not familiar with the Airborne Regiments order of battle, it would be my guess that the 6th squadron could possibly ant thing from engineers to recce to signal's
This gentleman in the maroon beret is not correct about the kit worn. The Lynx was air dropped on several occasions used by the 8th Canadian Hussars. I spent 36 years in the RCAC until 2015, crews were NOT allowed to put personal "unauthorised" markings on their vehicles and the naming of vehicles is in keeping with the cavalry heritage and the names were standard, not crew selected
As a member of the Canadian Armed Forces from 1974 to 1991 and in the 8th Canadian Hussars for 10 years I really take offense to this video. I was a member of the SSF of Base Petawawa for 13 years total. One Squadron of 8CH Lynx's as members of the Rapid Response Group of the SSF in Base Petawawa were jump qualified so we could support I repeat "support" the Canadian Airborne Regiment in their operations. The Canadian Airborne Regiment NEVER has any Lynx recce vehicles. Some of the Lynx's in the CAF were assigned to the engineers as the one above seems to be but the markings on the vehicle are incorrect. It shows three parachutes on the side indicating it made 3 para jumps. This never happened ever period. The base dress of the person in the video is also WRONG. What an embarrassment. If your going to review a 8CH or CAF vehicle please learn about the dang thing before doing a video of it. I highly recommend the removal of this video from UA-cam.
@Chris Richardson Actually Recce plt 3 RCR Mech INF Baden Baden, had a mix of lynx and M113, along with the Vandoos Mech INF in Lahr their recce plt also had them...up until they (lynx) were retired. then they switched to M-113 . And it was crewed by Infantry soldiers...
Literally "to know again". The idea is to find out everything you can about the enemy. Making yourself a target might count as that, but much better to not be noticed!
As an ex-Infantryman (3 PPCLI) & ex-recce (3 PPCLI), we used this Lynx Recce vehicle in our Battalion (in the late 1970s & early 1980s), & we did sneak up on the enemy with this vehicle. During battle, you wanted to be as fast & low as possible, & with shells screaming around you, your track noise was lost in the background. Even during a 'lull' in battle, the Lynx could sneak & peek, w/o being spotted (so Paul Langford, did you ever serve in this vehicle)? Thoughts?

Btw, Canadian armoured vehicles never said “CANADA” on them, however they did have a Canadian maple leaf on them

Armour Units never wore maroon Berets. The SSF Armour unit wore Black ones. I was in the 8th CDA Hussars in the 80's and nobody wore a maroon beret

Canadian airborne disbanded in the mid 1980s? I do not think so and an airborne member would know that

I was in the jump troop (1st trp PARA) RECCE sqn 8CH for three years and three months. What you wrote was 100% correct.
