  • Bride price is money, property, or other forms of wealth paid by a groom or his family to the family of the woman he will be married to or is just about to marry. In most African Cultures it is an essential stage that brings both families together. But since there is no unique price for the groom, some families use this as a means to exploit the men. In Cameroon, we have had men testify how they sold their commercial motorbikes that gave them income. This has in many cases been the underlying factor for Gender-Based Violence.
Inequalities between men and women in society are caused by this tradition. And people missed marrying their loved ones. Yet, the opinions seem to vary between age groups. Is Bride Price, therefore, a violent culture or Violence on men?
