As an African-American the struggle for freedom and the discrimination that Irish people have had to do with from the American past and the British crown I have a feeling of kinship for you all. In America "Dear Old Donegal" is the quintessential immigrant tune. It's not specifically about Irish history. It's about being successful in America, but being homesick for Ireland & dreaming of going back home to Ireland to share their success w/ loved ones. My grandfather loved this song. I would listen to it w/ him, but the entire time I didn't realize what it was about & that he must have been homesick himself. Broke my heart when I finally realized what the song was about, but by then he was gone.
