Liabilities very easily become problems, so it only makes sense to cut ties with those liabilities. This wasn’t a big gotcha, it’s a standard contract that he signed. What's missing from their argument over not threatening to sue is that the implication is there regardless. Yes, all they really did was state that they had the right to sue, but there are connotations to that statement. If they really did not care about the 15k, they wouldn't have included it as a "trade" for signing the NDA. The NDA wouldn't have mentioned it at all. They have the right to request the money back but the way they did so was absolutely a threat and an ultimatum.

What's missing from their argument over not threatening to sue is that the implication is there regardless. Yes, all they really did was state that they had the right to sue, but there are connotations to that statement. If they really did not care about the 15k, they wouldn't have included it as a "trade" for signing the NDA. The NDA wouldn't have mentioned it at all. They have the right to request the money back but the way they did so was absolutely a threat and an ultimatum.
