Greeks weren't just theoretical. For them, one of the greatest drives was astronomy and astrology, which they were very good at. I mean, good at astronomy. Reading the night sky was very important to their culture and their advanced understandings of geometry and trigonometry specifically, lead them to make such precise estimations that would only be improved in the modern world.
