I'd suggest for all dog owner to have a tick removal tool. I live in an area that I don't expect ticks and I've still found a few on my dog over the years. Also Ned is a gorgeous dog!
Thank you so much for this! I came across this video after finding a tick on my Golden Retriever. I've had dogs my entire 62 years of life and never had to remove a tick. The instructions by Shannon were spot on. Her patience was inspiring. I myself was infected with Lyme disease in 2008, so I was experiencing a lot of anxiety with this. God gave me the mental strength and Shannon gave me the knowledge to remove the tick from Star, head intact. Thank you McCann dog training and thank you Shannon.
It’s 32° in Pennsylvania and I just found a tick on my dogs head. We had a couple days of warm weather and lots of rain. She just went sniffing underneath a pine tree very quickly less than five seconds, and boom. I found this through my search and it is very helpful. Keep doing what you’re doing. Thank you for the education and appreciate all that you do with our fur babies
Just found one on my dog the first time in 9 years. Didn’t panic. We carefully with a pair of tweezers removed the tick. You gave me some great ideas for aftercare, thanks! Still scary though!
This video was super helpful! Found a tick on my Cane Corso Mamba and literally followed your video to the "t" and was able to remove the entire tick with the head still intact. Of course, following up with a vet visit but truly appreciate you taking the time to record this. We may have a few "phantom itches" for the next few weeks but Mamba is certainly tick-free.
Thanks, just removed a tick off my dog for the first time. I used regular tweezers, grasped it close to the skin and eased it out. The tick is very much alive and gross and my husky did so well I'm so happy. Here's a trick to ensure your dog is calm and not moving while you pull - do it during their bedtime. 👍
My dog is 10 years old, and he's gotten ticks before, but they never latched on. Yesterday, I was playing with him and felt a lump on his head. It was a tick that had imbedded. I started panicking because the first thing that came to mind was the risk of lyme disease. I grabbed the tweezers and eventually got the tick out, but damn it had such a tight grip I couldn't believe how hard it was to remove.
@@breathcollector2739 Since I had the same problem with the ticks and my dog wasn't going to stay still, I pinned him down with my whole body, since he is so big and removed it with the slightest rotation. And it worked!
Another trick everyone should have in mind is by choking a tick with applying home cooking oil while circuling with your finger around the tick. The tick is going to release it's grip and should've come off easily.
THANK YOU!! I was beginning to panic. My 75 lbs pit had a small tick right above his eye & approaching him with tweezers wasn't happening. I'm so glad I seen your comment, it was so easy!!

OMG so timely! We pulled 2 ticks off of Clover a few weeks ago. They had only been on there a couple of hours and weren't engorged, but we were traumatized nonetheless. I found one BETWEEN the little furry toes! CHECK EVERYWHERE!
Hi there, Kay! It is a truly unsettling experience for everyone involved! I’m glad you found those ticks on Clover so quickly. The sooner you find them, the easier it is to remove them! Thanks for watching ~Ken
Thank you soooo much!!! This video was soooo helpful!! We adopted a dog 4 months ago and I just discover a tick. I was grossed out. But I hold my dog while my husband removed it. No vet trips necessary this time, thanks to you.
Thank you ! I have safely removed my first tick on my dog, i didnt twist it, im happy i followed this video, simple and easy. I got this little tool at pet store, i bought different sizes for next time. Sending virtual hugs and thank you :)
Thank you so much! Hubby noticed something on our Lhasa-poos head between her eyes. He thought it was a tumor and I thought tick. After googling and determined it was a tick I watched your video. I used tweezers and slowly pulled like you said and two times and pop out it came. Put it in a zip lock and yes he was all intact legs moving! My dog is very patient and it's like they know you are trying to help them! This mama and her 12-year old dog are going to sleep well tonight! And yeah they are creepy and gross but I kept saying get out of my dog! God bless you!
I appreciate this video, but it'd be nice to see a removal method for when you don't have this special tool that she is using. An alternative method would have been appreciated!!!!Do you offer this tool or any idea where to purchase one???????? I'll be using regular tweezers, hopefully I can have a clean removal.
After watching your very helpful video we also consulted our vet. They said not to pull straight on the tick as if you got it wrong you might leave the head in. They recommended getting the tick nice and far into the "V" shaped slot and then rotating the "tweezers" round and round in a clockwise direction until the tick came free. Being our vet, we followed this advice and it worked fine. The tick came out alive with head still on. It took about 15 seconds so a little bit quicker than the method in the video and without any danger of the tick popping.
Hi there, markspark1001! I had also heard lots of differing opinions from veterinarians, so I tried to find the most authoritative source when we published this video. The Canadian government public health site confirms the method in this video and cautions about any twisting motion. Just for your peace of mind, here’s a link to the site: www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/lyme-disease/removing-submitting-ticks-testing.html Thanks for watching! ~Ken
Awesome advice! I had a dog tick in my red heeler near the same spot. I took a deep breath and told Sydney we got this! It came out just like yours, head and all. Thank you for this video!
You're braver than me, holding that tick your hand.. I'd be scared of the little sucker grabbing onto me! Great video though... it helped a lot because I'm living in an area with ticks and I need to learn how to remove them in case my little buddy gets one.
Anybody else who thought "BURN THAT DAMN TICK TO DEATH" at the end where they showed the tick for a while? I often wonder why ticks even exist, they're the most useless animals in the world.
Thanks just did this on a long haired pomeranian using tweezers and was successful! just needed to be careful not to squeeze too hard so I didn't pop it's butt lol I have spray bottles of both peroxide and rubbing alcohol so i killed it with the alcohol and used the peroxide spray on the pom directly then pat dry with fresh paper towel, and did it a couple times. Finished with one spritze of the rubbing alcohol too for good measure. Now keeping the dead tick for a week or 2 in a plastic ziplock bag in case we need to get it tested if an infection happens within the next week or so. Hopefully we will be good though :)
Glad you found it helpful, Akemi! I thought that too. After doing some research on Canadian government health websites, the danger of twisting is that there is a greater likelihood of separating the tick’s head. Gentle, steady pressure up and away from the dog is suggested as the tick is more likely to stay intact as its removed. Thanks for watching! ~Ken
During each summer, I had to "pat down" (which he loved) my old dog daily and remove 2-3 ticks from him, having the right tools does makes everything so much easier.
Actually it's recommended once you have removed the tick safely to kill it with rubbing alcohol and put it in the bag in case any signs of tick-borne disease appear you can actually have that specimen tested
you really send all the ticks you get out of your dog for a lab testing? Seriously all of them? I highly doubt that. There's a small chance the tick is infected. If a dog gets any symptoms later, you can tell the vet he had a tick recently and that's it. Are you going to test all mosquito bites too? and every watter puddle the dog drinks from? There can be some pretty nasty things...! aaand dogs eat numerous things while in the woods, better take everything back to the lab for testing! -_- Just chill guys. It's a nice idea if the area gets infected, or the dog doesn't feel good, but nobody will send the numerous ticks the dog catches on walks every year to the lab. It's just a tick. It's unnecessary to lab test every one of them. Kill the tick after removal and be done with it.
Slávka Kršková did I say all? No I didn’t I said if you pull A tick it’s best to get IT tested and lol everyone says that until a tick bites them and gives them diseases or there pets
Slávka Kršková your saying just chill guys when all I did was give advice and your typing three paragraphs from a book doing the same thing, I spoke from experience my dog had 1 tick at the side of his tail and we took him for it doing as soon as we noticed it and they said to us if a tick bites your dog bring it in no one said anything about bringing tubs full of ticks for testing did I?
We purchased a tool (big and small both in same package) from WalMart called a Tick Tornado. It is THE BEST thing we have ever used to remove ticks. You slide it under the tick, spin it around, and the entire thing pops out. We have never had anything left behind. We've been using for over 3 years, and it is a miracle worker for us.
Ticks don't have a actual head, anatomically speaking. Any parts left behind are the mouth parts/jaws of the tick. I just tried a Tick Key on my dog... snapped the jaws right off and was not successful in getting them out with tweezers... Doctors recommend a good pair of tweezers, grab as close down to the skin as possible, apply a steady pressure/grip, and slowly pull the tick straight out. Clean the site afterwards with rubbing alcohol. Lesson: Just because it is advertised as a tool designed to remove ticks does NOT mean they are always effective. My concern with the tool used in this video is that you have to slide the tool into place: if you slide too far you can chop the jaws right off. Stick to tweezers!
Just read a veterinary site and also an animal charity site on the removal of ticks who both recommended not to pull the tick out as this can risk leaving the head in. I have always used the tick plastic removers ( supplied by the vet) which you slide under the bulge of the tick's body and then gently but firmly twist the tool round in a circular movement and the tick will come away. Having had cats and dogs and had to remove ticks from both this method has always been successful. On one occasion my dog had obviously an been biting an area on her back leg. I successfully removed the tick but because of the previous chewing of the area ( which happened when I wasn't there) to he site was rather inflamed. Cleaned the area thoroughly and then applied antiseptic cream.
Thank you for this. I found a tick on my aunt’s dog while she was staying with me and IMMEDIATELY panicked that she was going to die staying with me (because I was the only person in the house) so this calmed me down a lot. (Her name is Rumour, she’s a black lab, and she hates me, so getting her to stay still for a picture of the thing, let alone the actual removal is going to be a nightmare.)
Your Ned loves his mommy so much 💕 I was watching him looking so gently at you when you were talking its so sweet how he was hanging on every word you said waiting to be or do anything you wanted all he wanted is to make you happy . If I was lucky enough to find a man who loved and cared like fur babies do...
i was petting my dog and thought he had a skin tag .. and then i saw it was yellowish red so i looked underneath and saw that it had to be a tick. now i’m sad because i don’t have that tool and i graduate today but i WILL skip my graduation to get this tick off of him. he’s an old dog so i’m not comfortable doing anything of that matter ☹️
This is literally how i just found one on my dog i was rubbing his belly and felt it and was like oh you got a skin tag and i tried to look at it and he got up and walked away and finally just got a good look and its a friggen tick but i think its dead waiting on him to go to sleep so i can get it off him lol
Thank you so much for the video, very helpful. Had no idea it took so long to extract a tank, would have a hard time keeping my dog still. LOL. Definitely will try this method if ever.
@@McCannDogs Thanks Ken! Your videos are going to be a huge help. Have you considered doing a livestream where people can ask questions and get answers real-time?
Howdy there dog parents. Just found a tic on my furry pal and clicked on this video. My tip for y’all if you don’t want to buy a tic remover or touch the tick. Use a fork! It works exactly like the tic remover. No difficulties and tic came out in one piece.
Thank You. Such a good, practical idea. Didn’t want to use tweezers as it squeezes the belly of the tick. Was trying to think of an alternative to buying yet another piece of kit so Thanks again
It would have been of interest to know if any preventative treatment were already being used on this dog, and how the live tick was disposed of. Thanks.
I don't know about her but my vet removed one from my Puff this morning and gave me medication to squirt down the middle of his back from head to butt. Supposed to kill instantly if one gets on him.
Thanks, this helped. Years ago, the recommendation was to light a match, blow it out and put the hot head of the match on the tick where its head attached to the body. That would work - after a few tries, but probably on the principle that the tick was forced to let go because the heat and it probably regurgitated more toxins under the dogs skin. Just now, my dog seemed more curious about the tick carcass than the sore spot it left on his side. Thanks again!
What should I do with the tick after removing it out of my dog? Should I burn it or drop it in dish wash liquid? Can anyone plz answer this???? I'm confused
Put it in a jar with lid or ziplock bag. You want to save the tick in case your dog becomes ill with lyme or another tick-borne disease. You'll take the tick to your vet to identify.
Thank you so much for this video! I thought I would be able to remove the tick myself...but nope’d right out of that after seeing this! At the vet’s waiting now. EWWWW.

I look after a few strays in the village, and a couple of them have ticks; tomorrow I'm buying one of them tools and having them out.
Not me whos brother is taking a huge tick from my fluffiest and one of my youngest dogs
If you have a local groomers take your tick tool they are usually more than happy to pull it out for your dog less stress for first timers!! 🙂
Hello Sarah how are you doing
Hi just watched your video as my little Yorkshire had one, excellent video, I got it out with head in tact . Thank youx
Hello Linda how are you doing
Thank you so much for this. It puts my mind at ease a lot. I was sooo freaked out. I am not sure if I got the head or not.
Beautiful pup! Do you worry about Lyme in your dog??
Your Ned loves his mommy so much 💕
I was watching him looking so gently at you when you were talking its so sweet how he was hanging on every word you said waiting to be or do anything you wanted all he wanted is to make you happy . If I was lucky enough to find a man who loved and cared like fur babies do...
Thank you so much for this, my pet got his first tick and i found it today.
I always just pull. I've never taken this long and no problem
I just take the ticks and drown them 😶
I just take them ...
With my hand
And trow them in water and make sure they drown🙂
Is....that oke?
Thanks for uploading this! So much information in just 6 minutes, all of it valuable.
We found like 20 on my dog and took them off and then we went to the doctors and then got some 3 month medicine 😁
i was petting my dog and thought he had a skin tag .. and then i saw it was yellowish red so i looked underneath and saw that it had to be a tick. now i’m sad because i don’t have that tool and i graduate today but i WILL skip my graduation to get this tick off of him. he’s an old dog so i’m not comfortable doing anything of that matter ☹️
Awww how did it go??
This is literally how i just found one on my dog i was rubbing his belly and felt it and was like oh you got a skin tag and i tried to look at it and he got up and walked away and finally just got a good look and its a friggen tick but i think its dead waiting on him to go to sleep so i can get it off him lol
Thank you so much for the video, very helpful. Had no idea it took so long to extract a tank, would have a hard time keeping my dog still. LOL. Definitely will try this method if ever.
Ned is so cute! We're getting a Toller next year and can't wait to have our own little guy :)
That's really exciting, Soobin D! They're such an amazing breed, you're going to have so much fun! Happy Training! ~Ken
@@McCannDogs Thanks Ken! Your videos are going to be a huge help. Have you considered doing a livestream where people can ask questions and get answers real-time?
Sir the problem is my doggo isn’t allowing me to remove the tick tho I handle her so gently how do I remove ticks from her
Tell her it's necessary to remove the tick for her own good
Arun Ramesh you can have a person that has treats will you go and take it out
Lucas Meireles yes dude I tried it out and it worked well thank you 😊
@@arunramesh77 Hold her down. And if she remains calm, pet her and show her that's she ok.
Prathmesh Deshmukh 😂😂
Howdy there dog parents. Just found a tic on my furry pal and clicked on this video. My tip for y’all if you don’t want to buy a tic remover or touch the tick. Use a fork! It works exactly like the tic remover. No difficulties and tic came out in one piece.
That's a great idea!!
Thank You. Such a good, practical idea. Didn’t want to use tweezers as it squeezes the belly of the tick. Was trying to think of an alternative to buying yet another piece of kit so Thanks again
Wouldn’t want to eat with that fork
I wouldn't put that tick on my hand, better to put it on a paper towel.
Ya was thinking the same thing
Hello how are you doing
@@henrygills1512 what’s up henry
Such a good and beautiful dog!! Thanks for showing
Hello Kristine how are you doing
We just got a new puppy this July so this video has been a huge help
Thank you for this video. It helped us when we found a tick on our cat.
Hello how are you doing
What do you use for tick meds or DIY
It would have been of interest to know if any preventative treatment were already being used on this dog, and how the live tick was disposed of. Thanks.
I don't know about her but my vet removed one from my Puff this morning and gave me medication to squirt down the middle of his back from head to butt. Supposed to kill instantly if one gets on him.
Found tick on my dog fallowed all the rules and then my dog is a happy happy dog and Ned is super super cute
Does it work like this also for humans?
Thank you. My tic is in exactly the same spot.
Thank you so much for this video! I thought I would be able to remove the tick myself...but nope’d right out of that after seeing this! At the vet’s waiting now. EWWWW.
Good one. If you get one on yourself, keep it, bag it and send it for testing for Lymes
Great & informative Video💚
Hello Charlene how are you doing
thanks for the great video. and fyi, people are Horrid, and situations are Horrible.
I just found two ticks on my dogs ear and I was worried so any suggestions to stop or remove them?
My brother has a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. She's a great dog, and my brother trained her well.
On my dog we thought it was a pimple till I watched this video
One time my teacher found a baby spider in my head. I was TERRIFIED.
Will ticks latch on even if you have your dog on tick preventatives?
My vet said to spray with rubbing alcohol first. It relaxes the tick and makes removal easier.
its like the dog knows he seems really happy
I usually burn ticks with a small butane torch after I pull them out...they make like a popping noise
This was so helpful and put me at ease
had a tic in our dog this tool worked great only cost $10 at ace hardware... thanks for sharing.....
What a lovely calm doggie bless him x x ❤️🌺
