I am so happy that this tourist trains re-appear after a long time. When I was I child (in the 70s), my mother and I travelled a lot with AMEROPA or TOUROPA to Italy and France and Austria in their "Liegewagen" (Couchette) and I especially remember the food bags on the trip to the Gardasee (Lago di Garda) where there was always a cold roast chicken leg in the bag. And I loved it so much.
The only delay was caused by a signal failure in Germany... it had nothing to do with the train or it's crew. I love it when services like this one are running just great even with older rolling stock. New trains sure cost a lot of money, so buying old stock and keep it running is the best option for new companies (just like Flix Train used to do it). Like you said /wrote in this video - no dining car, just some snacks and drinks offered (still nice instead of nothing) - maybe it'll be added in the future... in between the two train sets where it'll be split later. I thought the train will be split in Salzburg because one of the two parts is going to Bischofshofen and one to Bludenz, both destinations for ÖBB's Railjets or commuter trains. (like the S3)
It was a pleasure. We loved every second of our trip and we got our Railjet right on time in Bludenz 10 minutes after our arrival. Thanks again for the trip.
Really enjoying these sleeper train vids. Riding in couchettes at age 14 from Calais to Luzerne in the mid 60s was a formative experience I have never forgotten. Love your line of work you lucky fella!
I love night trains. This one would be nearly perfect with a dining car attached to it, i think. I'm a little jealous that I wasn't allowed to travel on this train so far. 🙂 The best night train experience so far for me was the City Night Line in a deluxe sleeper cabin. I would make me so happy to see this trains back on rails cross europe.
Its so nice to see charter trains like this finally being revived. Not just with this but also other ventures too like the similar Snälltåget service once a week from Malmö, and the Danish cities of Copenhagen, Odense, and Kolding, to similar destinations in the Alps. Hopefully we see even more trains like this in the future, it certainly looks like a much nicer way to travel. It's also interesting to see a night train like that at St Anton. DSB, the Danish State railways, actually ran a winter charter train back in the day from Copenhagen to St Anton called "Skiløberen". However it was discontinued in 2008, and the concept of it was only revived last year by Snälltåget (who actually also own several of the old Skiløberen coaches, but doesn't use them much these days)
Those carriages had been sitting in a yard in Cologne Deutz since the start of the pandemic, so it's good to see them finally getting some use. Some of those sleeping cars looked almost derelict a few months ago. There's another train set still there, the "Autoslapptrein", though that looks to be in significantly worse condition.
Im pretty sure these carriages are from münster (westf) cause the company these are rent from has its own yard there. but they are now used so frequently you will most likely see them in Amsterdam. The urlaubszug uses their own carriages as far as I know.
the qr codes do work on the gates, but you will have to turn off NFC on your phone. the NS app does this automatically, but other apps don't. this is extra important from next week when you will be able to travel by using your bank card, which will go via NFC as well.
Even if you don’t turn off NFC, you can hold the QR code up to the reader, then press the home button to dismiss the wallet interface while still holding the phone in the same position. This works on iPhone. I’d imagine it’s much the same on Android.
Also use one of the outer (less used) gates as the glas covering the QR code reader is so scratched from the NFC cards on the gates used more often, that it can't read the QR code properly. That really is a big design fail.
This was an informative and very enjoyable journey. I really appreciated the background information you provided. Outstanding photography.! Thank you and Benjamin for sharing your railway experience with us.
I was going to make a snarky remark about the beer, but since it was the only choice: my sympathies. Typical: you cross into Germany, and something breaks. I have a theory that it is impossible to drive a non-trivial distance over the Autobahn and not encounter Baustellen (i.e. road works). Same for the railways: there has been chronic underinvestment for decades. Big thumbs up to GreenCityTrip for including Chocomel in the breakfast box. Some 20 years after I emigrated from the Netherlands, it is now available at my small local supermarket in Malta. Austria and the Alps remind me of my childhood. My parents would drive all the way to southern Germany (Baden-Württemberg) or some lake in Austria, and we'd go up mountains, or at one time I tried to build a dam in a mountain stream. I've been badgering my wife that we take a trip to Austria, but this time Vienna, and to visit a friend that lives in a town on the Danube. It's like Germany, but with everything working.
Used the old CIWL cars with OeBB back in 2008 from Graz to Zuerich. Comfy and not too noisy even over the wheels. Considering their cousins on VIA are still going for now, it's not a surprise that they're still in use. The old DB NachtZug Talgos were cracking cars, shame they're gone.
4:50 the Vectron (in your case it's 193 527) is an Alppiercer 2, the Nightpiercer is 193 532 which has a different pattern than the blue SBB Vectrons (it has a night background with stars.)
We had nearly the same Sleeping cars i Denmark before the Great Belt Bridge together with British Rail mk 3.sleeping cars they had a great ride on the tracks
The scenery on the Arlberg line is incredible. It boggles my mind that more travel guides don't make a point of seeing and experiencing a ride on that railway. I rode on that route way back in 1979 on a night train from Zurich to Vienna, in a coach where the compartments had the pull-flat seats. There were six of us in that compartment, lying noses to feet on the big bed formed of six pulled-down seats. In those days, long before Schengen, we all had to wake up and show our passports at the Swiss-Austrian border. I really have to go back and ride that route in the daytime!
We met an elderly Dutch couple on the Hurtigruten Cruise who regularly used this to travel to the Austrian Alps for skiing. From below sea level to Europe’s heights I suppose is an attractive proposition as the Netherlands is very heavily populated per square mile.
Amazon Video 😍. Have Seen this train quite offen but only from the outside. I am surprised it looks on the inside way newer than I have expected from the outside :)
Funny: the livery of most of the coaches looks almost exactly as the FS long distance trains in the 1980s (some survived well into the 2000s and a few may be still sitting somewhere on the sidings). And those stainless steel coaches are probably built to last forever.
Nice review. TUI needs to offer full dining service for such a long journey. Beautiful scenery!! Good looking accommodations. Thank you Thibault. And Benjamin too.😀💚
Dining service or some better catering is on the todo list for the future for these trains. They already had a lot of trouble to get the coaches itself. There is a huge shortage of these coaches in Europe at the moment. The operator has the ambition to offer full service.
Great trip. First thing I know about TUI is the airline (especially holiday airline) and sometimes Long Distance Bus/Coach Service. And yeah few days ago I watched Shinkansen trip to the Ski resort in Japan, and today I watch same thing but using Sleeper train.
Benjamin and Thibault, thanks for the footage, the ride looks lovely. A pity that you have to book accomodation and ski pass. But I saw you can do the Austrian part of this trip by railjet which is also a great train.
Not gonna lie, I clicked on this video because of the SBB cargo international vectron, they're just so pretty and I didn't know they were used on some passenger services!
If you’re gonna be in Austria again, could you maybe review railjet‘s first any/or business class experience? Would be really interesting :) Keep up your great work! 🔥
Lovely! 🙂 I went often with the Austrian P-type cars in the late 90s to Belgium and Italy, later they were relegated to less "glamorous" routes and still could be taken to Belgrade, for example in the late 2000s: Ride home from the UK via Brussels in 1995: ua-cam.com/video/5eyCMHbWqNQ/v-deo.html Ride to Istanbul via Belgrade 2008 (we already changed to the BDZ sleeping car before arriving at Belgrade getting 2 compartments for a bakshish of 20€): ua-cam.com/video/dZ93gBTEKuM/v-deo.html
Though I never rode it, I remember having seen the TUI FerienExpress a few times in the 1980s. The rolling stock was custom built end of the 1970s including couchette cars of elevated comfort and "TUI treff" cars that could be used as snack bar and for onboard entertainment. Unfortunately the service ended 1993, the TUI treff cars didn't survive, the couchette cars went to NS, then to EETC and finally mostly to MSM, they are still used in seasonal night trains. TRI has bought at least one and repainted it to a livery similar to the state as built, but that one has not yet been seen in service yet. If TRI goes on refurbishing ex-TUI cars, maybe they'll be used in the TUI Ski Express sometime in the future ... then it goes full circle.
Thanks for sharing, I'd love more eco friendly and affordable package holiday options! Maybe they should get the contract to run the Caledonian Sleeper?! As is true of the Mk 3 stock, things were built with substance over style which sadly isn't the case anymore....
19:08 - look at those entry doors - just like the train cars in my childhood (1990s) had... (I grew up in Germany and now live in Austria). Just be careful when opening them because they'll swing in your face when you're not careful - I know what I'm writing here...😅
The Type Ps in their original form had twenty single-bed compartments, interlaced in a sort of double-deck format. The Cité du Train museum in Mulhouse has an original example.
Before I subscribed to Simply Railway , I didn’t realize that there was an abundance of European night train routes. My wife and I has now added taking the night train from Munich to Zagreb to our future bucket list. Thanks and keep those reviews coming!

From Amsterdam to Bludenz - via Wörgl, thus from the east? The natural way would have been from the west via Bregenz, and before that Ulm - Friedrichshafen - Lindau. This line has been electrified for a couple of years. The only remaining problem (to my knowledge): When electrifying, DB didn't also reconstruct the 'Mussolinibahn', which was a short track connecting the Südbahn and Bodenseegürtelbahn (see WP [de] article). This would eliminate the need to change directions at Friedrichshafen.
This is a fantastic service, highly civilised way to travel. As mentioned by others, the main failing of the service is the lack of a dining car for dinner on leaving Amsterdam and breakfast (cooked) riding through Austria. Thank you, Thibault, for speaking better English than recent U.S. Presidents and British royals. At 6:00, "It was a dream for my brother and me . . . ." Many people nowadays would use "I" instead of "me"; they're wrong and you're right!
I see a lot of passengers boarding the train at Utrecht but not skis. Are skis loaded in a baggage car or do the passengers rent skis at the ski resort?
So many people boarding the train! Good to see nighttrains came back with a BANG!

800km during.... 15 hours. Impressive! 🤣🤣
Well, that's because it has Nationalized rail networks and I really wish we have that in U.S..😥
Nice video, very interesting, beautiful and very much enjoyable also.
You love your sparkles, snap, great seeing outside light up in the pitch dark
Funny to see myself in one of the video's for once🙈 it was nice to be one of your attendants, hope the trip back to France went well
It was a pleasure. We loved every second of our trip and we got our Railjet right on time in Bludenz 10 minutes after our arrival. Thanks again for the trip.
I love the Vectrons too, fantastic locomotives! An SBB one hauling a passenger train is rare as well.
Amazing trip and love to see coach livery same as of engine.
Wow that's a great shot of the train departure, wonder who took that extremely well done and high quality video. They deserve some croissants.

That was a "KICK ASS" video guy's. Incredible scenery !!! WOW!!! Thank you for sharing it with us...
Such a shame you missed the snow by a week, the scenery is superb. Hopefully the TOC will find more routes to cover.
The scenery is just beautiful and incredible. 😍
Sure is
That was so cool ! Just confused about rail system in Europe!

Swedish state operator SJ scrapped their WL5 , built in the 50's and refurbished in the 90's Some refurbished to allow to go to Copenhagen WL5K and some to Berlin WL5D. But all refurbished with vacuum WC, en suite showers and disc brakes...
I love the old coaches! Do they have anywhere to store ski equipment on the train?
You should review the Amtrak Carolinian and the Capital Limited! Loved your videos!
Can't tell in the frame what brightness your phone was on. But a common issue with digital QR codes on these gates is that they're only able to read it on max brightness. Not to accuse you that you didn't have it on full brightness. But that's one of the biggest reasons why it usually doesn't work.
Sometimes they also recognize the NFC chip which spits out an error.
Nice video.
I hope TUI adds a dining car … especially since departure was at 17:31 and arrival at 09:30. Two opportunities for meals lost - dinner and breakfast 😕
My admittedly limited exposure to Dutch people is that they are, at minimum, bi-lingual and often speak 3 or 4 languages! How quickly did you settle on English to converse with the crew?
"We have the powerful vectron, we will use the powerful vectron"
Whoever put that train together, probably.
This is nice, but I do enjoy living somewhere were the «ski express» is just taking the regular old metro up the mountain
If you want a small toilets time, come to Australia and ride the intercity V-Set trains out of Sydney. You can barely get into them 😂
I feel like a “land cruise” on a train with good quality food and entertainment on board included would be such a successful service especially for Americans and Canadians visiting Europe. They could have a kitchen with a few restaurants and room service offered, they could easily get a bar and some other forms of entertainment and if they did what night hey have done and have double decker sleeper carriages they could get a lot of people on board. I’m thinking an equivalent of the Ghan or Indian pacific in Australia but in Europe (or even North America) and less of a focus on being posh and high class and more of a there is room for all vibe like most cruises. If they had someone who’s job was to keep showers clean I feel like they could even get away with shared public showers. I feel like a private company could really thrive with this model especially if it’s affordable for families or regular adults unlike the closest alternatives in Europe. If I was in Canada and was going for a virgin cruises adult only vibe I would 100% try to lean into weed tourism by having a weed train car with vents a lounge area (not sure the gov would be down but it would be a cool idea since most trains have a bar or alcohol)
That Vectron really should be called Snowpiercer, after the train in the series on Netflix.
Wow, and I thought Amtrak long-distance trains were depressingly old and delayed.
Don’t hate on Heineken. It’s always a go to for me😂

Great video! Thank you!
Are these cars owned by the RDC?
The only problem I see is if that loco dies it is a long way for any help!
If the loco dies, the train will get pulled by another locomotive, to free up the line

Thank you, Thibault, for speaking better English than recent U.S. Presidents and British royals. At 6:00, "It was a dream for my brother and me . . . ." Many people nowadays would use "I" instead of "me"; they're wrong and you're right!
Were the stainless steel cars licensed by Budd?
No restaurant car?
I see a lot of passengers boarding the train at Utrecht but not skis. Are skis loaded in a baggage car or do the passengers rent skis at the ski resort?

Greencitytrip is not a new operator. Train Charter Services is the operator in the netherlands, they drive the train for gct.
