As for many CCR-Songs, Fogerty tuned his guitar down to D and so he did for this song. It's much easier to play (the fill ins) and sounds way more right. Look at the live videos! Some are played in standard tuning though, but on some he fingers E instead of D, but it sounds in D.

Power chords are taught further down the line in grade 2: www.justinguitar.com/modules/rock-power-chords-for-beginners

The principle of power chords is that they are missing the "middle" note (which in music theory is called the Third) that gives a chord the minor or major quality. The C major chord consists of the notes C, E and G and when you leave out the E you're playing a C power chord, which sounds neither major (uplifting) nor minor (sad).
Hope this helps and enjoy your guitar journey, it's worth it!

Hi there. I wonder if anyone could help me out? I was trying to work the chords out for this song - something I've never really stuck at. I figured out what I thought the intro was then the first chord he holds before the verse start. I thought I'd nailed it then played it along with it - not nice at all. My guitar was tuned fine and I'd just been playing along with another song just fine. Tabs online have it the same way, but it doesn't sound right over the song, so I came to YT. This chap Justin is playing exactly what I figured out, but it just doesn't sound right over the record. I tried moving it up or down a semi tone or so, but that doesn't seem to work.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Cheers in advance.
