  • Kortney James, PhD, RN, PNP, postdoctoral fellow in the National Clinician Scholars Program at University of California, Los Angeles, was the featured speaker at the Nancy Steiger Research Seminar Series on Feb. 7, 2023.
Her lecture, titled "5x No More: Centering Black Women and Birthing People to Achieve Perinatal Health Equity," took place in person in the UCSF School of Nursing building.
James' program of research focuses on the physical and mental well-being of Black mothers and birthing people. She uses a health equity lens and the Reproductive Justice framework to assess the ways that clinical practice and public policy can be "retrofitted, reformed and reimagined" to meet the reproductive health needs of Black women and birthing people, while also considering the influence that structural racism and culture have on their health and ability to receive quality care.
