- Welcome back. As a continuation from part 1, in this video we show you how to do a basic Michelin sign for either yourself or a customer. I will also discuss some useful tips along the way.
I was a tattoo artist for 21 years , changing trades at the moment , sign writing is the future, love your videos , no nonsense n straight talk , look forward to seeing more , thank you !
When you realize the brush is not "promising", what is it that you're noticing? What are signs that a brush isn't worth using? Loving and grateful for all the vids!
Hi Chris, if you cannot make a corner with a brush (twist the brush into the corners of a square) then that's not good and if the hairs have been cut and it has lost its natural taper then that is not good for the brush either. So signs are: you cannot paint a corner / if the brush won't follow a circle like an O or an S because the hairs flick or they are too strong. The hairs being strong on a new brush isn't so much of an issue because they will loosen with use. Another telltale, would be a brush wanting to bend and not return to its normal straight shape. This will happen if you only use one side of a brush so make sure to use both sides of the brush.
an amazing amount of advice as usual. so much that I'm actually taking notes!
You got this!
Great video as always, thanks for sharing. Are the Handover brush.s good ! I need to buy some decent chisel brush's but get a bit lost looking at their website !
Yes Handover brushes are good. It's what I use. Just whatever brush you purchase make sure the hairs are natural and not cut.
Hi Phil, enjoying your videos, if you were to recommend say 3 chisel brush sizes to get started in sign writing what would they be?, i'm currently looking at Handover 2112 series, just because i have a Handover sword already, thanks, keep up the good work..
Handover brushes are great, they are what I use. Size wise: maybe a 4 / 5 / 6. When you order your brushes make sure the hairs are uncut. They did do various lengths of hair, a short haired brush is good for posters because it is speedy, the longer hairs are better for straighter lines but personally I could not get on with the longer hair so I always opted for a medium length.
@@Airbrushartist Hi Phil thanks for the reply,,, yes i just got 3 from Handover, they arrived last Saturday, i got a 3, 5 and 7 in the K Series, it will get me started, i will try them and then see if i need bigger or smaller, Cheers.
Very informative. Very skilled man. But please stop saying "obviously" all the time and get a decent camera operator. That is all.....
"Obviously" it is the Mrs that operates the camera and I cannot tell her what to do or she beats me. I'll try and stop saying "obviously" I'm not an actor so I'm not working off a script and I'm not getting paid either but I will try.
@@Airbrushartist I get it mate. Hope I didn't come across as rude? I didn't quite understand that tip you described. Can you elaborate please?
@@baxterenrife Which tip are you referring to and I'll try my best to explain further :)
@@Airbrushartist It's where you said that an old signwriter once told you about making a curve and a sharp corner. I was wondering exactly what you meant? It might not be on this video where you said it....
Do you mean a curve and a straight? The paint is always thicker on a straight so it holds the line better, but when doing a curve you need the paint slightly thinner so the brush will bend easier and thus making the paint come off the brush slightly quicker.
