Wood heat is so nice. It is a lot of work to make it happen. But so rewarding to set in a warm house and watch it snow and blow outside knowing your family is safe and warm.
I'm doing three cords with a sledge, wedge, and a maul. It's taking a long time and it's hot this summer. I am getting close however to finishing the splitting. Next will be stacking. the old dried stuff goes on the rack. the other stuff will dry Holz Hausen style
I could watch this all day and never get bored with it. There is something satisfying watching that wood split like it was butter. Not nerve racking like hand splitting and pieces flying everywhere. It is exhausting to do and to watch. Love the log splitter. Wish I had one. Please show us more from time to time if you would.
That's a beauty of a machine! A wise man once told me, wood will heat you three times over, but that machine seems to disprove that myth. I guess it only heats you twice. Love your videos, and the epic beard! God bless.
I am happy to see you have gotten things like this, to help you as you get older. im 50 and have a bad back and joints now, I couldn't imagine surviving with a wood stove without having this.
My husband welded some extensions on our log splitter. Makes splitting the bigger logs a dream. It has to be a heavy one like Doug has in this video but sure makes splitting a lot easier.
Freaking amazing. I'm a 63 yo widow. Wish I was in my 40s and could have switched to your present lifestyle! That splitter cuts those logs like butta! You 2 are amazing!
Yes Doug, that's exactly what I said don't split that one, use it to sit on! Just as soon as I said it, it pops up on the screen. How did you do that! lol Yes that is a nice machine!
Fay Baldwin I understand what you are saying It’s happened to me more than once. And it just happened to you I can hear the excitement in your tone 😊😊😊👍 .
Good info, Doug. I have 20 acres and cut my own wood and all. At 69 and retired now and not having been very physical during my working life doing all this by hand is almost unbearable. Spending money on the toys is money well spent. I bought a log splitter this year and the stand up feature is a huge help. I just can't pick up those giant slugs. My other can't do without toy is my little John Deere 1025R tractor. The neighbors make fun of it when they see me out working but it can do most jobs they can but it just takes me longer. For the average person starting it works great and makes life so much better.
I do not see log splitting in my future, yet i still watch these vids as who knows the future.. This way of splitting wood i have not previously seen. Always good to learn. Esp as only a few years till i see 60. Slower safer ways is something i also look for. Last 2 months i added using my dolly (also use wheelbarrow) when moving heavy garden items around. Less of a tendency to move too much at once. Thanks for this vid. Yall be well.
Yes Doug I've already made preparations for my labor in my older age. I have acquired a log splitter lifts I'm my wood for me up onto the splitter. It has a hydraulic lift to use that saves my back.i also totally heat my home with wood.
Yes it's a whole lot better to be out cutting in the winter keeps you busy instead of being couch potato and I find it nice also to just sit an listen to nature and a good talk to God.... As always thanks for sharing stay safe and god bless you both and your family...
I have been watching this channel for a while now I love love love you guys! I can't wait to see a notification that you all have uploaded an new video. This is the first time I looked through your comments. Holy Moly! I can't believe all the negativity you battle through! Never ever stop producing your wonderful, informative, encouraging and very intelligent videos! Keep the faith you are reaching people who are very interested and are listening.
We just got a new log splitter last year with the piece to split it into fourths. Really like it. I agree about the vertical. I used the old one many times with the vertical so we get get the trailer loaded to haul down the mountain. Smart man splitting them smaller for Stacy. I hate getting ahold of bigger logs. No spring chicken here.
64 and still splitting by hand, lol. One of nature's gifts. Been cutting, dragging, stacking & splitting & stacking again since I was 12. I also split different size so the wife can stoke the fire if I'm not home. Our grandkids named the different sizes - "Poppy logs" and "Nanny Sticks". 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Cheers from down under
Wow, you can see the frost hit at your place almost all the leaves are gone. I have seen you do that before with your log splitter and thought what a smart idea it is to have the straight up and down feature. I have to agree those logs get very heavy and it does not much for the weight to show even on a smaller log. I like to watch you break the logs.
Yes great feature, I have a Wallenstein splitter and it can go vertical also, and I have a 4 way wedge. Would like to get a stroke limiter next can set it so it only goes bacK to 17". I also started to spit my fire wood to 16" lengths and split into smaller pieces so my wife can handle easier. I was cutting all my firewood to 24" long, no more of that, much lighter as you say with smaller pieces. Thanks for sharing, Jim Ellenor from Ontario, Canada.
Yes yes and read a book bake some cookies smoke some bacon enjoy family while everyone is forced to be tucked in together off of work pleasant time of year for sharing treats before and after. The big guy in the sky sends us something beautiful tears of great joy when the snow cast clouds over the great Washington DC .... Badeeb..... badeeb.... That'll be me who gives the feller upstairs a thank you and a hello.....
Doug man that is an awesome log splitter... i am so down for the flip up thing... i don't think people put enough thought into splitting wood until you order your first full cord.. i am with you i tried an axe a maul, a slide hammer, then the grenade wedge and a sledge hammer (that combo worked for a while) then my favorite at the moment a fiskars axe.. that scandi axe head does work.. but it is all way too much effort and if you have a pile of wood like you have oh my God. you really need your splitter... i bet on a good day you can split more wood than can be imagined.. GREAT TIP.. great stuff comes out of your homestead.. thanks for sharing ... J
The fella I purchase wood from splits logs small for me. 😊 It’s just me and my dogs. They can move smaller pieces to the house and having the logs smaller helps me and them.👌🏾 I do not know if this fella has a log splitter like this, but I’ll mention it to him this week.😊 Great video Doug!
That's cool that you just did a video about this, as the last several days we've been doing the same thing. Ours does do vertical and for large logs, for sure, it's a must.
Got a "Dirty Hands" brand made in Colorado just this season. 30 tons and can do anything I've thrown at it. Chasing speed and tonnage starts to add up in cost. Realistically a 22 ton could do 90% of what I need. The extra capacity brings a smile though. They are best used with two people.
The hubby got severely injured 5 years ago...permanent damage, he no longer was able to do sledge and wedge and the splitting maul had no choice but to get a heavy duty log splitter...don't remember if it came with a 4-way or not...but we only use the 2-way, although sometimes the wood is dry enough we can sometimes get 3+ in one split. Ours can lay down like that, but in all honesty...we have only used it in the perpendicular position.
Your a young man I'm 67 and still heating with wood that I cut and split, and yes my splitter is vertical and horizontal, and yes, I don't get in a hurry either. Nice video.
I put a 2x12 piece of scrap in front of the end plate when it's on the ground to "shim up" the outer edge of the log you're splitting. That way it sits on the end plate level so you don't have to hold it upright for the wedge coming down. It's REALLY helpful on those huge pieces. I'll take any little extra help I can get.
We had to get a manual because it's what we can afford right now. Certainly can't do the ax and maul anymore since disabled! Thanks for sharing this info tho! Good to know what to look for when we can upgrade!
I have a pro tip. I saw some pros dig a trench with their backhoe and parked their log splitter down in it. So the splitter was in the horizontal position, but level with the ground. They were able to roll even the biggest logs right into the cradle. These guys had 3 splitters and two tractors. They cut, split, wrapped and palletized a semi truck load of wood in 1 day.
Doing fire wood always fasinates me , i can watch it being done all day.😄 Sereously though, it amazes me how many people can tell you a (you should ) about fire wood and dont even know the diference between a rick and a cord. Keep up the good work doug.
I have used a log splitter that is like yours. It is fantastic! Took a while for me to move that piece of wood (not used to lifting a lot of weight) and my being a non muscular female it was a little challenge. There are females that could do it without blinking. I really enjoyed splitting the wood it was relaxing believe it or not.
Doug Wolfridge makes a log splitter. Made in the United states. It doesn't go vertical. However it doesn't need to. It has a hydraulic table that lifts large pieces. So yet another option. God bless
I used to have the same splitter. I've split 4 ft rounds with it. The kind of rounds you have to move the splitter too. I would dig a slight hole for the base to sit in. So I could use a rock bar to move the round into place. I never found a piece I couldn't split with it. I had hard faced the leading edge and sharpened it with a sanding disc on an angle grinder it would slice right thru cross grain wood like butter.
Naw, I'll keep my splitter with the wedge at the end and the flat block as the pusher. When you get a piece of wood stuck on the wedge that is attached to the cylinder and you retract it you can damage the motor or other parts of the splitter. (it barely missed your engine on a previous video). My brother lost two motors that way. My 8 x 42 inch cylinder can handle anything I throw at it. It even has a hoist for those logs I can't throw. at 56 tons it can handle dried eucalyptus 36 inches in diameter. That stuff makes oak seem like pine.
I've got a 30 ton NorthStar that seems to do a good job and I've split some gnarly stuff. Mine's got tubular steel deflectors/shields above the engine to prevent any damage from logs rolling off like you described.
I split 100 plus cords a year. Vertical is for splitting big pieces to a manageable sizes that you can lift. Then split as much as possible in the horizontal position way faster and easier.
Hey Doug hey Stacy thank you for the video I enjoyed it in one day I am going to buy one of those log splitters myself because I am almost 40 years old and I know what you mean and I finally bought myself a 6 month old Echo 14 inch chainsaw it looks like the person who owned it maybe used it three times and that's it I got it for $175 no tax last week and I'm going to put it in my garage and drain everything out of it and when the day comes I will have it
i'm in Victoria Australia, i collect firewood late Autumn (or sometimes early Spring if too muddy in Autumn). we have eastern brown snakes active from mid spring thru summer to mid Autumn, and they are deadly daytime hunters, so i avoid the forest till i'm sure they are hibernating. in 18 years of country living i've only ever turned over one log to find a 5ft brown underneath, and luckily it was asleep, but it woke up real fast and left the opposite direction to me (rapidly reversing away).
I also have a splitter that goes both horiz and vert our has a bar on each side of the splitter head that when a piece of wood gets stuck the machine on retraction kicks it loose and it still can split a 25 inch piece.
Nice option on that wood splitter, got me some garlic and honey fermenting and some in the brine as well like Stacey showed on her video. Can't wait till it's ready as I have extreme blood pressure issues. Got my garlic planted a few weeks ago. HAVE Y'ALL EVER tried BLACK GARLIC??? I just found out about it recently and have some cooking down. God bless
You can split those big logs by hand. Most people think that splitting logs is starting in one place and working in the same place until the log splits. I use a 5 pound ax, most people think that to split wood you need a splitting maul. I think the 5 lb ax works better and is easier to use. A lighter ax is a waste of time on larger logs. Take your ax and try to split the large log on the edge not in the middle, most likely it will not split. Keep a small part of the ax out of the log if you can, do not aim for the middle. Remove the ax from the log and move over 4-6" and wack it again. Keep going around the log every 4-6" until you get back around to the starting point. Keep going around the log trying to split in the same area each time as the last, 90+% of the time it will split on the 2-3 round. Once it splits split slabs off to the open face don't try to split in the middle of what is left. It will work just keep working on it. If there are a lot of knots that will be the challenge try to work around the knots. If you get stuck a wedge with a 4lb hammer can help get the ax out, leave the wedge in if you can avoid hitting it with the main ax. Be careful to just split the log and not you, a trauma kit should be handy any time you use an ax for anything. I am a little different than most I have a hydraulic splitter I prefer the 5lb ax. It also can keep you from punching out your neighbors or if you do you might be a little better equipped to do so.
You mentioned cutting and splitting wood through to the spring to heat with. Its much better to burn seasoned wood that's been drying for at least a year or two. You get more heat, its lighter to carry, and you get much less creosote buildup which makes it a lot safer to burn. And if anything happens to you where you cannot get out and cut, you have a reserve to fall back on. We always cut two to three years ahead just to be safe. Yes it was a lot of work for the first couple years, but well worth it. We were supplying wood for three homes. My Dad, an Uncle, and myself did the work. Axes, splitting maul, sledge hammer and wedges. Dad wasn't going to "waste money on a splitter when he had two people to do it by hand"!! All together we had a combined wood pile about 7' high 12' wide and about 60' long. We would burn about a third of it a year. The other good part is if you have a mild winter and don't use up that years supply, that's less work you have to do next season.
Just now watched this and have 2 things. That vertical feature is great. I have one of a different brand. I sometimes wrestle an oak round into position that is almost more than I can even roll and sometimes can't even turn over into a upright postition. I just go ahead and split laying on its side. But, I have to admit that, at 70, I don't last very long at wrestling these big rounds into position. 2nd, looking for a bucket to sit on? I found something at the Missouri State Fair a few years ago. A bucket seat that sits on a 5 gallon bucket. How many times have you sat on the bottom of an inverted bucket and ended up with sore underneath parts from that little rim around the bottom cutting into you? When I found this bucket seat at Sedalia, I bought a whole box of them to share with friends and family. And if you can get hold of a 2 1/2 gal. bucket that has the same diameter top, it is shorter and perfect for picking geen beans and other lower chores. It works best on a bucket that has a rounded rim and not a flat one and some silicone makes it spin like it's on ball bearings. LOL Don't remember the exact name but it is made here in Missouri somewhere.
Sweet, Doug, very very sweet! And yes, about 4 seconds before you flashed your words about a seat, I was thinking it! lol. Somehow, I suspect you don't see that as 'work' at all. You're having too much fun for that to be 'work.' : )
We built one that will out do anything you can buy. Used a 10 x 8 tubing. With a 80 ton ram off a used dump trailer. Used a old sub soiler blade ground down the side on the ram with a grinder. Havnt found any logs we cant bust. Total cost around $50
Ment to say we use the hydraulics of the tractor we used. Built the splitter where you hook it on the 3 point hitch on back of tractor. Has a stand on bottom so when you set it down it set even
Loved the soundtrack at the start of the video.when I watch I really miss my farm. The wife and I are going to move back to a smaller version of our farm.
I always enjoyed it myself when camping, using an axe. Though if I built a homestead I'd probably get a log splitter too. After the 100th log it's not fun anymore. :P
I wonder if you have a plan to build a roof over the log splitter? My dad used a splitter to process wood for his wood stove. He lived in a big city and the Recycling Center offered the trees for free. He was retired when he started so I know he was at least 65. My conclusion was that you can take a guy out of the country but he's going to burn logs, even if it takes his whole adult life to get back to it. I stacked wood sometimes but I'm OK with HVAC.

I hear ya Doug. I am 73 and picking my battles is important. I still get all my own firewood, but is allot smaller pieces than it it used to be.
Wood heat is so nice. It is a lot of work to make it happen. But so rewarding to set in a warm house and watch it snow and blow outside knowing your family is safe and warm.

I bought a 22 ton log splitter that splits vertical last winter and definitely made a big difference and we use it for two households
Amen ! You learn as you age to worker smarter not harder. You get one body, be wise! Thanks for the video!
Lots of off grid YT channels. This channel always has the best content. I learn something new almost every video.
Thanks!
Aging in place means using your head as well!
I could watch this all day and never get bored with it. There is something satisfying watching that wood split like it was butter. Not nerve racking like hand splitting and pieces flying everywhere. Awesome feature indeed. Good tips Doug. I'm in my 50's also and it's important to preserve the body from taking a needless beating.
I am happy to see you have gotten things like this, to help you as you get older. im 50 and have a bad back and joints now, I couldn't imagine surviving with a wood stove without having this.
I remember cutting wood when I was little with a wedge/sledgehammer. my aim sucked, LOL
I’m so jelleous Doug because I used the maul because that is all we had !
My husband welded some extensions on our log splitter. Makes splitting the bigger logs a dream. It has to be a heavy one like Doug has in this video but sure makes splitting a lot easier.
Good point about slower and safer. You always want to keep things under control.
Freaking amazing. I'm a 63 yo widow. Wish I was in my 40s and could have switched to your present lifestyle! That splitter cuts those logs like butta! You 2 are amazing!
Working those logs is slimming you down, a Lot!
I like your new log splitter
👍😊
Yes Doug, that's exactly what I said don't split that one, use it to sit on! Just as soon as I said it, it pops up on the screen. How did you do that! lol Yes that is a nice machine!

Log splitters are nice. I like the physical aspect of splitting wood. To each his own. Nice video.
I do as well just not every single time 👍
I don't know why, but I can watch wood splitter videos over and over. I find it relaxing. I guess if I am not actually DOING it... ;D
Doug, you make it look like fun! Very sensible advice!
Nice, thanks for the tip about the 4 way.
That's cool that you just did a video about this, as the last several days we've been doing the same thing. Ours does do vertical and for large logs, for sure, it's a must.

Hey Doug ,good tip. They also make the log ox that is fantastic
Always get s lift on your splitter. Makes getting large chunks up on the splitter.and keeps the wood up on the splitter and off the ground .

Good work, Doug!
Wow you have really cleared up some wood dude, that's great, hope the weather is not to harsh for you guys.
I can appreciate picking your battle.
I ran my dad's kog splitter when I was a kid. Fun stuff for me then. I like the star attachment that u can get for this splitter.
Not boring at all. I found it rather satisfying to listen to the wood crack.
Doug Wolfridge makes a log splitter. Made in the United states. It doesn't go vertical. However it doesn't need to. It has a hydraulic table that lifts large pieces. So yet another option. God bless

in 18 years of country living i've only ever turned over one log to find a 5ft brown underneath, and luckily it was asleep, but it woke up real fast and left the opposite direction to me (rapidly reversing away).
Very cool. Never thought about that.
Thanks!
Very satisfying to watch, like a hot knife through butter and beats chopping wood :-D
I also have a splitter that goes both horiz and vert our has a bar on each side of the splitter head that when a piece of wood gets stuck the machine on retraction kicks it loose and it still can split a 25 inch piece.
Great looking blog splitter
Your stroke return seems pretty slow. Otherwise, looks like a nice unit.
Makes sense. You never know. Maybe we'll need one someday. 😉👍
Nice! Vertical Log Splitter it is!
Good job Doug. When I get my homestead I want to get one of these wood splitters
I said I would be putting up wood all winter to spring for the following years 😉
Granted that is a useful feature but a backhoe type trencher can be used to split wood and with a fixed thumb added stack it as well.
Hey Doug I'm 65, and I'm all about a power splitter these days! Haha
I’m telling Shawn James lol
Dan Lafser: ha his intro for sure lol
@@clh476 I commented about it too, it's the second time that I heard it on this channel.
Frederick Moller because everyone loves Cali
Has a stand on bottom so when you set it down it set even
Goals!!!
Well, I'm impressed! 👍
Love all the information you share❤️
Phew! Though I was watching Shawn James there for a second...
Loved the soundtrack at the start of the video.when I watch I really miss my farm. The wife and I are going to move back to a smaller version of our farm.
How much wood needed now that you insulated your upstairs! compare from the previous year?
I need to add that rack to my splitter!! 👍
You edited out the best part of you wrestling the actual big stump over
When you're board, splitting wood is exciting!
I always enjoyed it myself when camping, using an axe. Though if I built a homestead I'd probably get a log splitter too. After the 100th log it's not fun anymore. :P
Yup... CHAIR! Exactly what I thought
Can you guys talk about your clothing and gear for homesteading?

I wonder if you have a plan to build a roof over the log splitter? My dad used a splitter to process wood for his wood stove. He lived in a big city and the Recycling Center offered the trees for free. He was retired when he started so I know he was at least 65. My conclusion was that you can take a guy out of the country but he's going to burn logs, even if it takes his whole adult life to get back to it. I stacked wood sometimes but I'm OK with HVAC.
5:56 hhahahaa, yes indeed. was looking at those vertical log splitters at tractor supply about a week ago.
Dude, thank you for buying made in america!!!!!!I do the SAME!!!!!
Check your hydraulic filter in your tank mine started to slow down like yours and I cleaned it works much better Jim North Carolina
I hear ya as kids we didnt have a log splitter we were swinging axes and mulls and a hatchet for kindling.
We are watching
