- I walk through the eight system traps from Ch. 5 of Donella Meadow’s book, Thinking in Systems. These are:
1. Policy Resistance
2. Tragedy of the Commons
3. Drift to Low Performance
4. Escalation
5. Success to the Successful
6. Addiction / Shifting the Burden to the Inventor
7. Rule Beating
8. Seeking the Wrong Goal
This book is required in one of my "Human Relations program" courses. And I must say that your videos and explanations have helped a lot to have a better understanding of the concepts and organize the book's ideas. Thank you!
I believe the reason why she calls them traps AND opportunities is because traps are a naturally occurring phenomenon that you'll never be able to avoid entirely, so when they do occur, there is an opportunity to improve your system.

The drift to low performance is better illustrated with a mixed team of varying performers. Those high performers get more work because they either do it well and/or produce it quickly, low performers cannot satisfy either, thus overwork high performers and underwork low performers. the high performers can seek other jobs more easily and have the incentive to do so, leaving you with low performers. This is the case in restructuring!
