Suzuki S-Cross Review - Car Obsession

- The S-Cross has become a bit of a forgotten model in the SUV market but now there's a new one. But is it any more memorable? I've spent the last week with one to find out - the model tested here is the mid-range SZ-T model fitted with Suzuki 1.0 litre Boosterjet engine.
How does this engine perform in a car of this size? Watch the review to find out.

Reviewer is good to watch. Easy voice to listen to, all nice and calm and informative. Music was relaxing also. As for this car, I think its a very good car for the money. You dont see many about so thats appealing, and Suzukis are built to last. Id rather drive something less common like this, instead of the usual suspects and would also say if you want a car to last a long time, you cant really go wrong with this brand if you dont have tons of money to spend. No point keep trading in every 3 years either, especially if you dont do a lot of miles, its pointless to keep throwing your money away. I think a lot of people panic when a car gets out of warranty, they think it will suddenly turn into a car made by British Leyland ! Once its paid for, you save a fortune, and Suzuki are one of the best for reliability.
Hello Ernie, thank you so much for the positive feedback, I'm glad you liked the video. Yes, it's not very often you see an S-Cross on the roads; I think the styling and lack of strong marketing could be a factor. Thanks for watching.
Yes I have the SZ5 auto with the 4 wheel drive and I absolutely love it.
Good to hear Paul, thanks for watching.
Suzuki cars are very durable and economic , small engines are constructed to operate at high revs and constant load (such as a motorcycle engine)! Suzuki AWD is very good .This new model has a beautiful design! BOOSTERJET 1.4L / ALLGRIP seem to be very good ! I've had many years ago the Suzuki car. The seats were very comfortable as well ( I'm about 180 cm tall.)! I use Google translate !
1.4L BOOSTERJET
Maximum torque Nm / rpm : 220 / 1,500-4,000
Compression ratio : 9.9
Maximum output kW / rpm : 103 / 5,500
Bore x stroke : 73.0 x 82.0
This Suzuki 1.4L BOOSTERJET also drives the car at lower engine revs very well! Thanks to the long piston stroke and low pressure turbo and maximum torque at lower revs and wide rev range !the engine has to last long, thanks to the engine Compression ratio 9.9 .
Hi Milarepa, thanks for watching and commenting!
Practical Recommendation can you comment about 1.0 engine?
you seems to understand about engines.
i’m interested in the 1.0 if you could comment some technical data like you did in 1.4 engine... i will be glad
tanks
the 1.0 engine is all what you need. I make test drive with 1.4 engine, but i bought 1.0 turbo engine. It is very powerful , maybe like old 2.0. you must to be very careful with gas pedal.
Nikolaj Nikolov thats handy to know actually. Thanks for posting
I have the sx4 All grip 2017. Your review is spot on. Thank you. I absolutely love it
Thank you!
Believe it or not, thanks to this balanced, honest review, and a bank holiday weekend special offer - and lots of fun with two great salesmen (I don't often say that!😲😉😄) - my partner bought one, same spec as this, in blue (we didn't feel we could stretch to, or needed the all grip version). Better all climate tyres would help no end in bad weather, the economy tyres are as much use as a chocolate kettle in the UK. Over all a good car, often overlooked. How long the peppy little 1.0L 3 cylinder, lower pressure turbo set up will last is anyone's guess but Suzuki's are usually bomb proof in that regard.
We'd nearly given up after looking at a raft of other cars, saw this review, got the special offer - twisted the sales team's arm for some other extras - and a 2018 model was purchased in 2018.
My only criticism - there has been a few minor niggles, all quickly sorted by our friendly, not quite so local, dealership - is the adjustable centre console cubby hole/arm rest, which makes handbrake use a little awkward (but you get used to it). And I've not found a way to completely cure the parcel shelf 'shake and rattle' 😄😄😄🙄😄. An annoyance though are modern brake pads and friction materials without brass/metal filings, common in all modern cars, causing pad and disc glazing, disc noise and additional rust and detritus on and around the wheels. That's car industry progress though I guess🤔🤔🙄🤔
Thanks for a great review, these really are great motors😊✌️👍
Hey Muso, I'm so glad my review helped you, thanks for watching.
@@CarObsession You're most welcome, thank you👍😊
Great review, thanks.
Yes Pheasants...... body nuisance, one wiped out my door mirror once.
Ohhh and well done for answering comments, not ALL reviews do.
I've decide on a Vitara S but only just, the S Cross with the 1Ltr BoosterJet is a very capable car.
Hello g0mhc, thanks for watching. Yes, I try and ensure I answer all comments where possible because as a viewer I would want some kind of acknowledgement that my comment has been seen. The S-Cross is by no means a bad car - far from it - but it lacks the fun of the Vitara. I'm not sold on the styling either... I reckon you'll have some good fun with the Vitara S! What colour did you go for out of interest?
@@CarObsession I quite fancy the split colour pearlecent yellow and black. I order it on Friday. Thank you for the advice. Think I will go for the Vitara
Hi. Does the SZ-T come with heated door wing mirrors? Thanks.
Hi there, thanks for watching and thanks for the question. It's been a long time since I reviewed the car but I'd be surprised if a car of this age didn't have heated door mirrors.
nice vid.👍🏼
if i bought this car probably id go to the 1.4 with automatic brake and adaptive cruise control.
👍🏼
Thank for the feedback Hugo, glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the review, I have watched them all about the S cross, yours was the most honest.
My question is. I am disabled and torn between the S cross 1.0 Sz-T auto or the Vitara 1.4 Sz-TAuto my wheelchair fits in them both. what would you recommend. I haven't asked anyone else. thought I would ask your advice. …... Andy
Hi Brian (or is it Andy?), thanks for watching, and thanks for the great feedback! If it were personally, I'd go for the 1.4 Vitara. The Vitara is more fun in my opinion, I also think it's better looking, plus the 1.4 engine has a good amount of shove to it.
SCross is £2000 to £2500 cheaper than the Vitara in the UK if you push hard for discounts. Full leather, slightly bigger boot and dual-zone climate helped me choose it over the better looking Vitara.
Andy, what did you decide on, I’m n the same predicament
Are the auto CVT or traditional torque converter gearbox
@@gordonbeattie2726 I went for the Vitara. 1.4 auto. Collect it on the 5th of July. It was the best choice better fuel economy to. CVT box very quiet to. No jolts very smooth
nice review
Thank you Karlo, thanks for watching!
Great review, thanks.
Cheers Andrew!
I know your not allowed to take a bias opinion in regards to different type of cars. But as i need your advice before i change my Moka 1.4 turbo.elite at the end of this year.
Do you think this would be a suitable replacement for an 80 yr.old pensioner on the Motability scheme.?
Hi James, thanks for watching. I can see no reason why this would not be suitable, although you may find the ride a touch firm compared to some other alternatives.
Hi thank you for your quick response, without putting you on the spot, do you think i should think about another make and model of Suv or Cuv.rather than the Suzuki Sx4 cross.
My reason for asking, is that both my good lady and myself, have severe back pain, and wihh you saying that the Sx4 Cross isva firm ride.Im a bit worried that i make the wrong choice.
If you can advise me with this problem, i would be very gratefull to you.Thank you in advance.👍
Great review mate! Keep up with the good videos? Why do you guys in UK only test-drive manual gear cars?
Hi Charlles, we do get auto cars to test, it's just somehow I've not been given one yet.
Does all SZ-T model include 1.0 petrol have android auto and apple carplay?
Hello Ashish, thanks for watching, and thanks for the question. I can confirm the SZ-T comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
@@CarObsession very nice review and thanks so much
One last question
Does it use USB port inside armrest for Android auto or its wireless?
@@ashishpatil9490 USB Port
0-60 11s pedestrian? This is an suv with a 1.0 engine. Bought for a reason not a 0-60 drag. Suzukis are bought for reliability and 4wd qualities in the main. No comments about towing ability or what its like with 4 people in. Reviewers would rather talk about hard plastic and 0-60. This is a niche vehicle in its sales probably bought by loyal suzuki followers. Not criticising just when will a review contain towing info as this is the sort of vehicle with fwd that might and also whats the 1.0 like fully laden. I ve never owned a suzukibut everyone i know that has are now loyal customers. I am attracted to the level of kit these have and the reliability as i keep my cars a long time
Hi Mjt, thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback.
Do you think the 16" alloys would be better for ride comfort?
Good question funnyfiveminutes. In my experience, all the Suzuki models I've driven have quite a firm suspension set up. I've not tested the S-Cross with smaller wheels, but I would say it would be an improvement. I'll be honest though, I don't think it would be a MAJOR improvement though. Thaks for watching.
Car Obsession Thanks for the quick response! All the best
No worries my friend, good luck with the car hunting!
3:20: "Zero to 62 miles is 11 seconds which is quite pedestrian, to say the least."
LOL, I'd like to meet a pedestrian who runs from zero to 62 mph in 11 seconds.
😅

What is that little black square for, on the door handle, is it some kind of fingerprint writer, or just a door opener? And is the start/stop button available in every model, or only with the models with panoramic roof window? And last question, is the manual gearbox available (or choosable) in every model too? thank you
Hello Kolman, thanks for watching. The square is for the keyless entry, so if the car is locked but the key is in your pocket, you press the black square and the car will open. In regards to the specification, where are you based? Because the UK cars may be different to the ones in your region (if you're not UK)
Thank you! I'm from middle Europe. But I hope, I don't have to order the panoramic roof window model to get the keyless entry, start/stop button and I will get manual gearbox! Your video is nice
Hey Kolman, I'm glad you like it! What I'd recommend for you is to visit your local Suzuki dealer and have a chat with them, and maybe even have a test drive! Good luck!
is this the mineral gray or the galactic gray?
Oh blimey, now you're asking, I shot this video months ago! 😂 I believe it was Mineral Grey but I'll check
Hi George, I've double check and I can confirm it's Mineral Grey. Thanks for watching!
in term of handling which one handles well S Cross of Vitara S Turbo ??
Vitara S
Looks nice but I rather prefer the Ateca- though all these new SUVs are beginning to look the same!
Yes, the Ateca is a great looking SUV, and it drives well.
Car Obsession Blog I had VW Group cars for almost 10 years. I would never buy their cars again. Very expensive to service and not very reliable anymore.
My SEAT Ibiza FR is quite reasonable to run ;)
@@CharllesC78 im sticking with Japanese brands from now on after wasting my money on VW, Audi, Skoda etc. A choice from Suzuki, Subaru and Mitsubishi would be all I need these days and beyond.
gooing to buy 2015 model
Cool, thanks for watching Renato!
Car Obsession only thing I cannot understand what means soft feeling on the wheel or what did you say about feeling the road on the steering wheel?
At what point in the video?
At 6:11 you say steering is light?
So, that's in regard to the steering weight. When you turn the wheel the steering feels light. I hope that makes sense.
Why would people choose this over the vitara?
The S-Cross is able to offer a bigger boot, but other than that I can't think of anything else that springs to mind, I'd rather have the Vitara personally. I would say the S-Cross is a bit more grown up as well.
I much prefer the vitara too, is the boot of the S-Cross that much bigger than vitara? its boot doesnt look small at all..
No, there's not much in it - the Vitara S I tested offered 375 litres whereas the S-Cross offered 430 litres. So I doubt you would really miss the extra space. I also think the S-Cross is perhaps aimed at a more refined audience whereas the Vitara is quite fun and youthful in its look in my opinion.
Thanks for clearing it up :) good reviews
No problem, I'm glad I could help :)
