They say that people who play exceptionally well "changed the game", but Lawrence taylor literally did. He set the NFL all time sack record while playing most of his career against a double team. He is one of only 2 defensive players to win the NFL MVP. He went to the pro bowl for his first 7 years. Lawrence suffered torn ligaments in his shoulder, and a seperated pectoral muscle during a game, not only did he stay in the game, but he got 3 sacks too. Taylor did all this while smoking an ounce of crack every day. Taylor was so dominant that the boogeyman would check under his bed an night to make sure Lawrence Taylor wasn't there.

While he was most known for his pass rushing promise, look up the UA-cam video on "Lawrence Taylor run defense". Not only was a he a crazed maniac on (and off) the field, his first step, willingness to play with pain to inflict pain, and instinct for the game was supernatural.

I'm late AF to this, so it's probably been said already, but there's a few things worth mentioning.
    - LT was high almost every game. On coke then graduated to crack. He straight up admitted to it.
    - He had other players take piss tests for him so he wouldn't get popped for drugs. One time he tested positive it's because his teammate was also on stuff. He couldn't even be mad.
    - He revolutionized the OLB position. Completely changed it to what we consider now the edge rusher.
    - The comment about the rest of the team also being in the backfield? The mid 80's Giants were STACKED on D. Carl Banks, Leonard Marshall, Jim Burt, Pepper Johnson, Harry Carson were all pro bowlers/all pro dudes. You couldn't triple team LT cuz they'd eat you alive elsewhere.
    - That clip where he broke Joe Theismann's leg, he immediately started screaming and waving for the medics to get onto the field because he heard and felt that leg snap. Ended JT's career.
    - He had games where he single-handedly made every defining play in it. Other highlight vids cover them, but one game vs the Lions was like 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and an INT return for a TD. Another was vs the Saints with a torn shoulder, in obvious excruciating pain, 2.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles again.

Lawrence Taylor, defensively, has had as big an impact as any player I've ever seen. He changed the way defense is played, the way pass-rushing is played, the way linebackers play and the way offenses block linebackers.- John Madden

LT is the Goat, no contest. He was a LB, his coverage skills were on par with his rushing, people just don’t realize this because all the clips are of him rushing. This dude had a crap load of pick 6s and INTs, even a couple 90+ yard pick 6s. Literally the only D players to be able to control and win a game by himself from the defensive side.

LT was an outside linebacker, not a DE, in a 3-4 defense. He broke both of Joe Theismann's legs on that hit vs Washington. That hit was the reason teams were going with 2 TE's and why offensive tackles were more important and they got paid alotta money after that.

Sadly they didn't record forced fumbles as an official stat when Taylor played (they also didn't record sacks his rookie year). He was really the originator of the strip sack as a skill. He is sort of credited with 33 FF for his career, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't more than that in reality. He was an absolute monster. And yes, teams often double and triple teamed him. Otherwise he'd have had a sack on every drop back.
