- If you grew up in California, enjoyed a sweet treat on the American West Coast, or just watched movies or sitcoms based in L.A., you may have noticed something very particular-all the doughnut boxes are pink. Why? It’s all thanks to Ted Ngoy, a Cambodian refugee who came to the States in the 1970s. After opening up his first doughnut shop, Ngoy used pink boxes to package the baked goods. As his business grew, he began to train and mentor other doughnut moguls, all of whom carried on Ngoy’s tradition with matching pink boxes. Today, Mayly Tao, the reigning Doughnut Princess of L.A., keeps her great-uncle’s legacy alive at DK’s Donuts-adding her own modern twist.

The daughter clearly understands the importance of packaging & presentation. The new box really highlights the artistry of their donuts, and will make the consumer feel like they really have something special. It will probably justify a higher selling price.
The daughter probably doesn't understand margins and has never had to worry about money, there's a reason over 50% of second generation businesses fail ;)
I actually thought the new box looked tacky. Thought the plain box was more simplistic. The product should speak for itself.

As an asian-american(Chinese/Vietnamese), I can confirm that red is a lucky color. That's why during Lunar New year you see a lot of red, red envelopes, red dragons and lions, red fireworks, ect. Although I grew up on Krispy Kreme, it's cool to know that asian culture is being represented like that :D

I always thought every donut shop had pink boxes. I didn't know it was just a southern California thing, minus some shop had white boxes here.
I remember California having all pink boxes when I lived there, but then, in Michigan, it's all just Tim Horton's (which is part of the reason we moved), and there boxes are special and decorated.

Well being Cambodian and not knowing about this! Wow learning something knew everyday that it became a cultural thing here in the U.S.Also the pink boxes are used for cakes as well. It very common now for us Khmers to be donut shop owners. I need to visit these shops when I go to LA!

Growing up in Long Beach the best doughnuts came from the mom-n-pop Cambodian doughnut shops, and still do. Big, fluffy, not overly sugared, and always had some unique versions available.
Cambodian donut owners is not just a Cali thing. It's more like a Southern thing in states like Texas, Louisiana, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, etc. But I think more Cambodians are going for Nail Salons now.

Companies allocate millions to create/change/update a brand image for a reason. Image is pertinent for success. Packaging is one way of creating an image.
If brands like Ralph Lauren or Calvin Klein only cared about the product and not the packaging (image), etc, they wouldn't exist today.

I have never seen a pink donut box in my life before now.
I like what Mayly decided to do via the upgraded boxes. It will probably turn out to be a worthwhile business decision as it is uncommon to see a donut box with that kind of eye-catching branding. Eventually her mother will see it paid off. Great story and history video!

in a lot of languages pink is to red as light blue is to blue. many cultures don't see pink as its own colour like us. russians for example see light blue and blue as two different colours
I was a fan of DK’s in Santa Monica for years! I just went there because it was close to where I ran errands, and because they had delicious bread pudding. They didn’t have as many fancy decorated donuts and weren’t famous, but they were the best donuts anywhere. I had no idea “DK” was “Donut King!” Now that’s an amazing story. Go find the documentary about the Donut King.

I like the simple pink box with the shop's logo better though (like one of the boxes shown at start). Gives a simpler, minimalistic, and more classic feel to it. That's just my preference though.

I grew up in the middle of southern California, all I knew was pink donut boxes until I moved to northern California. I never knew their history stemmed from an immigrant who helped others. Also, just from youthful ignorance, I was always curious how donut shops became a strong part of the Asian community!
We share the same sentiment! I grew up on the East coast land of Dunkin’ Donuts. When I moved to LA, I was always wondering why the donut shops were run by Asians and while the shops never seemed affiliated with each other, so many had the same pink box.
My local donut shop in San Jose is owner by a wonderful Cambodian family. They make the most delicious donuts. They told me years ago about learning to make donuts from another Cambodian. I love that he paid it forward, such an act of kindness.

Leonard’s Malasadas in Hawaii has had the same pink boxes for generations. Malasadas, though not donuts, are pretty similar and taste amazing.

as a resident in california and in a diverse city, i can assure u this local donut shop by me has pink boxes
Donuts have an interesting history in the US; at one time most donut shops and chains used proprietary recipes for their dough, but eventually they all switched over to commercially made mix, filling, and even frosting and they all started to taste the same (inferior). Simply put, over a period of a decade, donuts in America went from really good to really bad and everybody noticed. But the big chains had pushed out most of the small donut shops, and the chains were all about the bottom line, so donuts just continued to suck.
What saved donuts was immigrants from Asia, who had been exposed to French food culture, coming to America and realizing that our donuts could be SO MUCH BETTER, and we'd gladly pay extra. Sure, you can always find a Dunkin' or a Winchell's, but why would you? They suck.
Thanks to the Cambodians, there are tons of mom & pop donut shops here and they taste great. Dunkin got rolled out of California but came back. Had their donuts and they are low tier compared to any shop here in California that I have been to.
