Genichiro is just a really well written antagonist character. His fight with Wolf isn't just about revenge or a test of skills between warriors. No, it is also a battle of ideals, because both were truly fighting for what they believe are the right thing. They have their own reasons to get what they want, and they won't give in to doubts. Its not just a clash of blades, but also a clash of wills. This fight is easily a 10/10 in terms of lore and narrative.
@LeadFaun Genichiro had all that talk of saving Ashina and went through God knows what to do it and in the end he failed miserably that's what I meant.
Ludwig The Holy Blade I really liked demon of hatred phase 2. And owl father was good as well. But I like this more because It has parts that feel like the abyss watchers from DS3. and the battle setting is just perfect it’s a classic battle between a ninja/shinobi and a samurai.
While I do find Way of Tomoe’s ost to be pretty awesome, I absolutely ADORE phase 1 Geni. The mysterious side of this theme, contrasted by the pure triumphant heroism that just screams “No burden is too great for the sake of Ashina-”. I can just feel Genichiro’s devotion, his love, his undying will to protect his land and his people from any to all who appose that of the Ashina, though he’s willing to shed his humanity- he’s a true leader in my eyes.
Honestly I think this theme not only represents Genichiro as a character, but the very concept and nature of the samurai itself. Devotion, Honor, Bravery, Warrior spirit, all of it is perfectly conveyed by this track.
It's honestly a welcome refresher after Dark Souls especially giving us would-be tyrants and false gods; leaders who strove to great things but were so often undone by their arrogance. Genichiro feels like someone who, while still far from faultless, is truly pledging himself as a *servant* to this breakaway nation - to the point that there's no line he wouldn't cross. Not too often that we get an antagonist who is truly, utter devoted to a cause that they believe in, and I'm glad that our good general can count as an example.
Genichiro is my fav. I can do any of the Sekiro boss, no problem. But when it comes to Geni, it's just really special. Not only from a revenge perspective or the tensions building up between him and Sekiro, but also it's a fair fight that really teaches you how to really play Sekiro. Learn to attack/parry with him! The sword clanging sounds are just so satisfying. Such a shame that he only gets one health bar at the end.

I think one of the things sekiro does the best is that it gives you a personal connection with some bosses, genny in particular. In soulsborne games, unless you know the lore (and even then you're usually an outsider and have no real history with the bosses), it isn't that emotional. Genichiro on the other hand cuts off your arm and is a continuous asshole throught the story, and I feel like that influences how great it was to beat him the first time (and as a punching bag before grandpa). Anyway great theme. I think the fact that this was the trailer theme shows how reflective this theme is of the overall game.
I agree although it's sad to fight bosses like Ludwig it's a bit mitigated since you never met him beforehand having some personal issues with bosses like Genichiro makes it more satisfying to put the Bastard down for severing your arm.
That's why I also love Owl in both of his fights. He has a huge influence in the explicit dialogue and story that the game forcibly tells you and you understand that he is your father who has lied to you and you two have a personal connection, but through the purification ending players can choose to find out more about his past and discover more about what actually happened in Hirata (although the owl father fight never actually happened). Owl is directly responsible for burning Hirata, Owl is directly responsible for the destruction of Ashina, Owl is a strong ally of the interior ministry who have stalked Ashina for many years thanks to his help, Owl is the mysterious "Great shinobi" who is responsible for a large amount of shinobi fighting styles such as shadowrush, Owl was once a close friend of Isshin as well as Dogun, Lady butterfly, Orangutan and Gyoubu. Owl is the one who took the branch from the everblossom making immortal severance impossible without his "consent", Owl was the one who killed you in Hirata and he attempts to perform the same backstab when you fight him atop Ashina castle. You also have a part to play, because you wipe out all of Ashina's most experienced fighters and allow the info broker, who is an agent of the interior ministry to relay information which allows the interior ministry to research the rejuvenating waters in Mibu village and develop a way to kill the undying in Ashina.
I'm quite late for this but not only I totally agree with your comment, but also Genichiro fights along the game are such a badass mix of player development and also lore. At the beggining of the game, he is the end of the "tutorial" part of the game and we're totally F*CKED by him. Even though we have a chance to defeat him but at first playthrough, it's nearly impossible. When we fight him atop of Ashina Castle, we had a few hours of training with different bosses and enemies and he will put you to test with the parry and all different mechanics of the game. For me, this fight was when the gameplay system "clicked" and it was sooooo satisfying the entire fight. At the end of the game, we went through so much (just as Wolf did, in his journey) that we are a master of the shinobi arts and the fighting mechaninc. His a BOSS before the FINAL BOSS and we hardly lose a single HP point for him. Genichiro and all his fights are a masterclass of From Software of how to intertwine gameplay/lore/player mechanics for a great experience
Funny how similar Genichiro and Sekiro are to one another. Both are skilled warriors, both are willing to use whatever methods to succeed, both are wholly devoted to a master (well in all but one ending), and both bring about ruin in their desire to protect their master (Genichiro really should not have kidnapped Kuro if he wanted to keep any of his warriors alive, and Sekiro proves exactly why that is). Funny how a change of perspective, compassion, and willingness to accept limits and impermanence changes one into a heroic figure, the other into a villain.
Why do you determine them as a hero and a villain? Because one of them is main character and another one oppose him? Genichiro just tried to protect his home and didn't do anything horrible. He kidnapped the kid, but I bet Kuro felt himself just fine, sitting in the castle and reading books.
